The official video for this song was turned into a tribute to Chester Bennington, the lead singer, after he also tragically took his life. It's a gut punch to the millions of us Linkin Park fans, it's been a few years but still hurts. RIP Chester.

He sang the the song for Chris Cornell, whom he was extremely close to. Think he was the godfather for Chris' kids or other way around, but few months past and Chester could no longer deal with Chris' passing. After Chester unalived himself, the band decided to use the official video as a tribute to Chester. Song still hurts like hell though...😢. Loss of the biggest talents in the industry. This performance was a tribute to Chris Cornell who was Chester's mentor and friend. Chris had died by suicide early that morning in Detroit Michigan. That is why Chester had so much emotion in his voice and why he had trouble finishing the song. He actually had to step off stage after this song for a minute to get his emotions under control to get thought the rest of the performance.
Mike Shinoda and Eg White wrote the lyrics to this song about a woman that Linkin Park worked with at Warner Brothers records. She was the go between for artists/bands and radio stations. She passed away from cancer in 2015. This song was written on the day of her funeral. She passed after a very short battle with cancer.
After Chester passed away Linkin Park made the music video for this song as a tribute to Chester since they didn't get to film the music video before he died by suicide on Chris Cornell's 53rd birthday.

The history of this song is so cruel. The band wrote this about a friend who passed away from cancer. The day of this performance, they were meant to come out and play their new single Heavy; but that morning they learned that their friend Chris Cornell had passed away, so they dedicated this performance to him. Lead singer Chester Bennington was especially close with Chris Cornell, and his grief is so evident in his voice.
Two month later, on Chris Cornell's birthday, Chester lost his battle with his mental health in the same manner Chris did. When the band released the music video for this song, it was as a dedication to Chester. The song came to mean a lot to fans after Chester's passing 💔

That scream still gets me everytime. The first time i heard it i could really felt the loss of my mother and brother. Chester, such a talent and such a huge loss.
A little context to this song (My understanding of it anyways). It was originally written about a woman who had worked with the band from the beginning, this performance specifically was dedicated to Chris Cornell who had taken his life (that day if I'm not mistaken) the band heard about it back stage as they were getting ready and decided to do this song first. Shortly after Chris took his life we lost Chester and the band made the music video and dedicated it to him.
Again this is just my understanding some of the smaller details may not be 100% accurate (or there may be more that I'm missing).

@poesenpai6475 the only thing you got wrong is that Chester was woken up and told by his wife that Chris had passed away early that morning in Detroit Michigan. They originally was going start the performance with Heavy but because of the news about Chris they did this song first. Chester couldn't get thought rehearsal without breaking down in tears. I believe it was Chester who told the rest of the band once he got to the show.
The woman worked for Warner Bros records. She was the go between for artists/bands and radio stations. She worked with Linkin Park early in their career. She was diagnosed with cancer and passed away very quickly. Mike and Eg White wrote this song on the day of her funeral which Brad went to to represent Linkin Park. She passed away in 2015.

This song hit me hard when chris passed away and then it hit even harder after chester passed away. Everytime i see the official video i get the imrpressing that chester was saying his goodbyes to the crowed.

The song was originally written for a close friend to the band who lost her life to cancer. However not long after the song was released, Chris Cornell tragically took his life. Chris and Chester were extremely close. They had a shared bond of a very traumatized childhood which included sexual abuse. Chester battled mental illness and depression his entire life. Losing Chris became too much for him and he took his life on Chris's birthday. This version he sung here was sung a few days after Chris's passing and it completely crushed Chester. He was unable to get through the song without breaking down.
I was introduced to this song not long after my best friend and soulmate OD'd. It always gets to me.
When Chester belts that note out around 4:28... if that doesn't choke you up... I don't know what will. The pain in that note... you can feel it.
But ya as others have said one of the biggest reasons this has so much emotion in it is they juat found out chris Cornell had passed who they all knew and was chesters like very best friend. You can see him holding back tears like the whole time 😢

Mike wrote this song to honor a lady who worked for the music label who they all knew who died of cancer. This vid is from when they had just found out about Chris Cornells death! It became Chester's song after this and after Chesters death this becme a tribute to Chester because it fit! I couldn't listen to more then a verse of this for the year after Chesters passing!

This performance was shortly after Chris Cornell's death. They had intended on performing Heavy but after hearing the news chose to perform One More Light instead.
The song wasn't written for Chris but it was fitting for the day as a tribute...and now it's a tribute to Chester himself.

This ones so upsetting the scream of i do not in the original is so haunting like hes screaming to chris who they got news at that event about. Originally it was about a friend who had cancer and passed like you said. Then it became about those you lost or who took their own life. Chester took his own life not long while ya the man had tons of issues and kived a rough life this was the straw that broke the camels back hope him and chris are rocking in paradise 🙏
The extreme emotion in this performance is because it was a dedication to Chris who they had heard passed away shortly before going on stage

I feel lucky that I got to see them live once in 2012 along with Incubus who was co-headling. (Jones beach Amphitheatre, which you will know of as a Long Island native Lboyd) It's absolutely wild how Chester's voice, even live....sounds like he's in the studio. That's pretty rare.

The song was originally written for a woman that worked with the band who had died of cancer, it was later used as a tribute towards a close friend to the Chester and the band, Chris Cornell, who killed himself less than 24hrs before this preformace, and now it's used as a tribute for Chester who also killed himself on what would have been Chris Cornells birthday

It's still hard for me to listen to this song. I share a birthday with Chris Cornell (July 20), which also happens to be the day that Chester passed away, which also happens to be the day that my mom died. And the first time that I heard this song was a few days after my dad died. It's just a whole bunch of unhappy endings woven together.

People need to stop spreading the rumor that this song was a tribute to Chris Cornell. It was written by both Mike Shinoda and Chester and was suppose to be on the album, Meteora. There is literally an interview with Mike talking about why it was cut from the album. (it's one of the best albums IMO, but the song doesn't fit the theme of the album at all)
It was well before Chris died, and released as a single much later.
linkin park is known world wide. i am purely and eagerly curious. how in the hell did you not hear this song till now? this is a rendition of the song that is tribute to chris cornell. he cuts out on the lyrics because he is in pain.

He didn't even write it. Mike Shinoda and Eg White did, and I think Brad contributed a little also. Chester got to hear it in the studio and thought it was one of the saddest songs he's ever heard. He had trouble performing the vocals in the studio already.

@@CancerKicker98 doubt that. The reason the band decided to open with this song, instead of "Heavy", was cause Chris Cornell died that morning the day they had this show. So they started with "One More Light" and continued the set with other songs.
