  • The misconduct committed by one officer was deemed “outrageous” by his department, forced a prosecutor’s office to stop pursuing a case and cost the officer his badge. Just not for very long.

Second chances? He had three disciplinary problems in three years prior to this. “Second chances” is why a woman is dead in Springfield when a psychopath deputy was given a job after being discharged from the Army for serious misconduct, two DUI convictions and six law enforcement jobs in four years. This has to stop but won’t as long a there is no national database, no consequences other than slaps on the wrists or firings (e.g. criminal charges, decertification), and departments hire known bad officers and don’t care.

These small town departments hire bad cops because they've already been through a police academy. That way the department doesn't have to pay for their training. If they later do something that costs the town a ton of money (which most of them do), well it doesn't come out of the police budget, so in the chief's mind he's "saved money."

Did the investigative reporting include the CAD report and the other officer's BWC to corroborate Ofc. Ashley's assertion he turned off his BWC because he thought the stop was over? What is equally disturbing is his statement about "evil in this world". This means to this day he believes he did nothing wrong; that using the power imbalance of his position was no big deal and he was just the victim of some evil in the world. Does anyone know what it takes for a prosecutor to drop a case? We have hundreds of court cam footage where a prosecutor fails to drop charges out of fear of retaliation by the law enforcement officers they depend on every day. Last, but not least, the redacted report makes the case to always record interactions with police and consider checking out an app like Attorney Shield. This encounter might have ended differently had Ofc. Ashley been forced to deal with an attorney at original incident location.

She doesn't get a second chance on something as small as a traffic violation so why in the hell would you think something as egregious as what the officer did deserve a second chance? People like him are the reason why cops get to go from department to department with no repercussions for their actions.
