@@arandomperson8636 That depends, if the camera is used on natural day light or the lights in a room, makeups would appear more obvious. But if there is studio lights focused on the people, like in this video, they won't be as obvious unless they used a lot of highlighters. There's another trick that Mary used which is using her fingers instead of sponges or brushes. The warmth of her fingers and the models' skin helps melt the foundation, and mix with the skin better according to Mary.
A lot of you guys are saying Mary is being too rough on Claudia's skin but actually that MAC face and body foundation NEEDS that kind of massaging because it's so liquidy. That makeup has to be massaged into the skin to form this sort of film which also makes the makeup look so much more natural and beautiful.

Tsk. I'm quite shocked by the level of ignorance. Those who are complaining about Mary's application and attitude really don't know anything about the industry. She's a legend and many successful MUA's that we have today have assisted her including our darling Lisa Eldridge and the fabulous Charlotte Tilbury. It's just like those teenagers these days who are bashing Mariah Carey without even knowing her legendary body of work. All the geniuses in history have been slightly eccentric. But just look at the flawless and impeccable result at the end. I personally would be honoured to have this lady "slap my face around" if you wanna call it that.
I know you wrote that a year ago or so, but I want to thank you so much for putting my thoughts in words. I am 25, still pretty young I think and every day I feel ashamed or even disgusted with kids-these-days appropriating, misunderstanding or bashing the past. I don't think age is an excuse for ignorance, not when you have the Internet connection. It simply baffles me so much that they associate contouring with Kardashians, rather than decades of theatre and drag make up and blindly trust and follow all these self proclaimed "MUAs" and "experts", who are simply money making machines with no real passion.
And I love that you've used Mariah as an example, as I am huge fan of hers and her work and I think it's beyond discussion that her impeccable artistry, technique and musicallity make her the very best vocalist in non classical music (first 15 years of her career). But all these kids see and hear is a divorced mom with weight strugles, two kids and nodules and very over-the-top persona they don't get (and which is basically a charisma of a real diva, something very lacking today).

Even Charlotte Tilbury with her brand is catering to Instagram and so on to sell products (not a bad thing, just what a business has to do) and Lisa seems safe from all that

The model seems so lovely and kind of shy , so whenever Mary's expressing her quite the opposite personality she seems little overwhelmed !It's just so fun to watch two totally different personalities in one video ! Both are so lovely and amazing ! I really did enjoy and learned a lot from it !
People are so sensitive these days. Just because Mary Greenwell doesn't touch the models face like she will shatter if she isn't gentle doesn't mean she was being aggressive. You need to blend in foundation well and really buff it into the skin to get a nice finish and if you are sitting here saying "I wouldn't want her to be my makeup artist because she is rough" then that is ridiculous, Mary is an AMAZING makeup artist and just because she doesn't agree with the things that " beauty gurus" do doesn't mean what she does is wrong. You are all brainwashed with this idea that makeup artists are gentle when doing makeup but that's not how it is!! When you are doing makeup for fashion week and hectic fashion shows believe it or not you don't have time to be gentle with the model, she is not gonna go cry because you rubbed in foundation a little bit harder then someone would on your wedding day, she does what needs to be done to get a flawless look fast! There is nothing wrong with rubbing in foundation the way she did, and her model does not look tired or stressed, she actually looks like she is impressed with the fact that Mary is real and tough, because this is what the modeling and fashion world is all about, you are not treated like a princess and I don't know why you would want to be. People really need to get over themselves.

I agree with you but there was a point in the video where she was literally slapping the foundation on the model's skin. You can't blame people for thinking it was aggressive.
I agree. I can see why people thought Mary was being too aggressive, but if you watch her fingers on Claudia's face, the skin isn't stretching. Mary is particularly gentle around the eyes, the skin doesn't stretch, isn't pinched. She's just doing the makeup the way a makeup artist would on a job with limited time, quickly and efficiently.
Flyingburberries It's called tapping, not slapping. Tapping, just like the korean way of applying skincare, helps the product to blend and melt into the skin, making it appear more seamless and natural.
lol I made that comment three years ago but I said slapping bc she was being rather rough with her movements. Tapping consists of light and gentle movements but to each their own.
Oh my GOD! I love this woman! Her talent and career success are obvious. At the same time she reminds me of an absolutely hammered English Aunt sneaking Scotch in her tea. I needed that!

The model Claudia is so lovely. She looks like a ballet dancer. I love how light Mary went with the make up.
In my opinion, she was not aggressive with the model, she was just being....well, what a makeup artist on a fashion show is. Do you think they have the time to be all fluffy and gentle? No! They must do makeup quickly and efficiently. I think that the girl (that is sooooooooooooooooooooooooo gorgeous) knows that. And she was amazing as a model by the way.
Also, Mary doesn't use too many brushes. So it's important for her to use her fingers efficiently to blend in the foundation and concealer seamlessly so it doesn't look patchy. Too bad too many people think she's a bit too rough :) xx
+Semara Simu Shahin I think we compare her to Lisa who seems to be incredibly gentle. We're used to her gentle nature and approach so it does seem a bit jarring to see Mary. Who of course is brilliant in her own right.

Every makeup artist has their style. She used to princess Diana personnal makeup artist though. I don't think she would've chose her if she was too rough, there's enough MUA to choose from. Here, there's only one person, so no she doesn't need to work as fast or in a rush. But this is her style, and she did someone's makeup in about 15 minutes, which is pretty much the dream. I'm rambling at this point 😂

Mary is KIND OF intimidating but KIND OF likeable :D I find it hilarious how someone so seemingly fragile like Claudia is paired up to be Mary's model for the day, but the end result is beautiful tbh! (Also I love how sloppy Mary is with her makeup, I used to be like that but then I thought I needed to use any kind of approach that's more "professional" in order for my makeup to look better but you know what?? I'm throwing that idea out the window right away. Back to using fingers to apply makeup!!!!)

Mary is dead on about needing to look at the skin and lip tones of a redhead, not the hair! If only someone had told me this when I was young. Most makeup counter folks don't understand there are both warm and cool redheads, which leaves us cool-toned ones so confused, as the standard "redhead" advice is for the warm-toned ones. I see the same thing happens on the model as on me, which is the lip color always looks several shades warmer on my lips than in the tube. I have to go very mauve to match my natural lip tone. Clinique "Graped Up" and Mac "Midimauve" are the closest things I've found to my natural lip color. I was looking at the wrong end of the color spectrum for 40 years before I figured this out! I find the seasons technique for discovering one's ideal colors holds very true and helpful for us gingers. My family is full of Gingers, and we are all different seasons, warm and cool. Even though we are closely related and all with similar shades of Ginger hair and clear eyelashes and eyebrows. But our skin tones are very very different, and we must wear different colors of clothing and makeups or we would look really weird LOL.
Fantastic that your family has it figured out :-) It seemed that in the 80s, the seasons technique threw me in autumn based on hair color, and the skin was assumed to be warm. I am glad this has evolved since then!! I was really surprised to discover I have brown lashes and brows, not clear or red. Again, I probably didn't really look till I was close to 40!

How can people not love this? So freaking cool, she just slaps shit on and it looks fantastic! Personally I like the way she just bosses the model around, hahah. Sure the model looks slightly uncofortable but it seems like she's just generally awkard in front of the camera. You can see that she really likes the look by the way she smiles into the camera between the applications. Mary Greenswell seems like an amazing person and she's allowed to boss my face around anytime she wants to

I love her philosophy and technique on makeup. Love it!!
When i went to makeup school they always reiterated not to use my hands because "it looses the exclusivity and respect for space" kind of feel for the clients, i always wondered why and I couldn't understand why using my hands would be a bad thing. They also taught me not to ask my clients to rub in their lips for me because according to my teachers, it was my job to blend it in, i kind of understood that, but i still didnt find it wrong to ask. Now, seeing Mary Greenwell whip up her magic once again with all my schools rules broken, I can't help but think "i dont give a damn what my teachers said" hahaha! Honestly, i never really followed the rules once i was done with school and now im so glad i didnt stick to the rules. This collaboration is one of the best! I hope to see more of her in the future. So much to learn from you both.
Yeah screw the rules. Pat Mcgrath also loves using her hands to apply foundation. As Lisa Eldridge said, the tactile experience allows you to understand the product better and the warmth of your hands actually helps the product to melt and blend into your skin more seamlessly.

I adore Mary's approach to makeup in general. Very fresh and modern looking which is what any Lisa Eldridge fan has come to appreciate in her work. Also I find no problem with Mary's truly hands-on approach. It makes the makeup application more real and less fussy. I think sometimes we get wrapped up in needing 10 brushes for every face look. Brilliant makeup by a brilliant artist!

People bitching about her "slapping" the model's face have apparently never tried patting MAC F&B in to their skin. Trust me, it looks its absolute best when you pat it in. It may look stupid, but it works.

+Haneen z YES! Like a natural look for olive skintones right? I generally know that i have to use yellow, warm toned stuff, but how does one make everything harmonious without looking too yellow and too sickly
+Ruth S. I prefer to use bb creams instead of foundation, because foundations are usually more yellow-ish (that's my tip)
Julia Cardoso Thanks for the tip but nah I'd rather pass haha :) Actually, I detest BB creams - they usually have a pink or beige undertone, contain sunscreen in it, and darker shades are lacking in variation on the market. Also, I was referring to colours to be used on the eyes/ lips/ cheeks in order to create a harmonious look, and not in reference to the shades of foundation :)

Oh yes! I love Karima; have been following her for some time. However, I'm darker than she is - pale olive skin tones and darker olive skin tones tend to require different kinds of attention as they usually belong to people of different colourings I've found. I did get some great foundation recommendations from Karima and I try mixing my existing foundation with the paler olive ones. Lisa recently did a look on the model Neelam(?) which was Amazing!! Yeah - I'd wish for a natural look with someone like her with tips on colour combinations and the such ~ :)
Mary is such a joyful and down-to-earth person. I love her, she is so amazing. When she pinched off the excess mascara and acknowledged her "laziness". I have never seen a make up artist do that :) And the result...simply wow

This is Mary Greenwell not your typical "makeup guru". She is an icon to anyone who is obsessed and is part of the Make-up world. She wasn't aggressive at all, if you want to go see aggressive then go back stage to a behind schedule fashion show. Those artist basically slap the make up on and spin you around.

This look is so fresh and bright, and really daring to go for bare-looking eyes, it's bold but somehow minimum, i love it.
She slapped her? Omg some of you people are such wusses. She barely patted it in. Have you ever been to a facialist? The skin is meant to be massaged with that kind of force to increase bloodflow and by massaging in and patting the MAC foundation, it really melts into the skin. It gives you a more lumionous, flawless finish. Make-up shouldn't be painful, but, it shouldn't put you to sleep, either.
Also, Mary is really real, if you've watched any of her videos, she is quite the character, but, she's really respectful, I don't find her to be stuck up AT ALL. I'd rather have someone go straight to the point, than sugar coat everything with lots of adjectives and end up looking like a mess. Some people are such sensitive snobs nowadays, have you been to the real world lately? The model obviously wasn't used to Mary's technique, but, I doubt she found it uncomfortable.
In the end, the girl looked beautiful and timeless, not like a Kim K. drag queen.

I love that she uses her fingers! I have found that with delicate, pimple prone skin brushes and sponges are NEVER clean enough! Also, I have found patting with my fingers I get a wonderful texture :)

+Gail Fattori This would be a great look for anyone with fair skin, not just redheads. I love how subtle it is. Mary made the model still look like herself, but more ethereal and glowing. I'm just tired of all the amateur UA-cam make-up artists who slather on layers and layers of make-up and look unrecognizable when they're done putting on their masks of make-up. It's great to watch a real pro in action.
