Waldemar ended up fighting Carlson a total of 6 times(2 wins by Carlson and 4 draws). Later in his life his relationship with the Gracies improved. Though he never went back to Helio's academy, when he was arrested in the 60s by the brazilian military dictatorship under the accusation of being a communist, Helio used his influence and contacts among politicians and the military to get him released
Santana family have been paid off by gracie to play along remember he died poor 😢 valdemar beat 2 generations of gracie when they beat him he was in his 50s the gracie who beat him was maybe 19 or younger the whole celebrated what victory over a old black man 🎉🎉 bravo the gracie like Santana was money hungry Santana was at the beginning working for them and living in the gym as instructor cleaner and security in exchange for a place to sleep he was cleaning one day and gracie was showing his high class students who are white about gym when asked who the black man was gracie said that's just our cleaner this upset Santana 😡 and they fell out he stop turning up and told everyone gracie is rubbish it turned into a bigger argument over time result in fights valdemar won most of them
Waldemar Santana was a hell of a great athlete
Indeed
For those who don't know, Bahia is the Brazilian state with the biggest number of afro descendants, about 75%(among brown and black) of the population. Capoeira is really strong there, very traditional. As bjj has roots in Japan, capoeira has roots in Angola, african country.
Thanks for sharing
@@Chadi Thanks, Chadi
And Waldemar's teacher master Bimba is the founder of the modern style of capoeira. His style fused capoeira angola, which is based around swift movement close to the ground, with batuque, a folk wrestling style and also added the more accrobatic kicks and direct attacks (by then the 'game' of capoeira Angola was very much about hiding your attacks). In a sense, Bimba did to capoeira what Kano did to jiu Jitsu, forming a coherent and more practical system of teaching it. @chadi if you ever decide on doing a video on the conturbed history of capoeira or other brazilian arts like huka, batuque, marajoara I can help you find information
@@gregpermanCapoeira isn't brazilian, there was no such thing in what is known as Brazil prior to the Slaves arriving.
Even the Berimbau origins are African.
Capoiera (Kipura) is from Angola.
Waldemar was way way ahead of the times. He was a complete fighter and his jiu jitsu was excellent. His method was the escape and avoid and then strike on the way out. Although Helio was 43 at the time he fought him, he was still a prime Helio Gracie and because of Waldemar’s strategy and Helio’s strategy, they had long stretches where effective strikes were stifled on both sides. We’re talking 20 minute stretches where the distance was neutral and no damage was possible. This made for a long fight but Waldemar was an excellent fighter with a big heart and he learned how to attack and defend effectively from Carlos and Helio Gracie so he had the same type of gas tank as Helio. Almost 4 hours after the fight began, Waldemar stood from the closed guard which stayed closed rather than modify to manage the distance and Waldemar was able to land a few devastating strikes from the top that rocked the grandmaster and caused his guard to open. Waldemar hopped around the legs with the bullfighter guard pass and Helio stretched the arms rather than cover his head which Waldemar immediately recognized and threw 2 quick soccer kicks to the head that knocked Helio unconscious. These guys are genuinely tough with a warrior spirit that is rare even today.
43 is not prime 🤣 especially when the other fighter is much younger.
@@lambosnicko “although he was 43, he was still a prime HELIO GRACIE” - you’re reading this as “Helio was in his prime” smh.
the guy was a capoeira master of regional, a style i ha ve trained personally and let me tell you is a hell of a good workout. so for starter we have a family tree as well of capoeira styles and regional is the most in your face style made to be fast and strong and athletic. the old style or angola style is a glued to the floor style, and the modern style is the acrobatic af style.
Awesome
Mr Chadi, the greatest judo history teacher on youtube 🙌🏻
Thank you bro
You should do a video of you doing your top 5 judo throws.
Will do
judo is great , I learned some judo when I was a kid thru my uncle who was a boxer and a marine judo has never failed me , in self defense they dont get up from a judo slam
@@bugs4680 100% agree with what you said
Great video!! Need more like this!
I really wonder how many moves were all created by mm and not mr. Gracie, I guess we'll never know because mm is dead.
Enjoy learning the history of martial arts I have trained some in grappling arts But didn't know about it's history Thanks for the information
Forgive me for saying this but the Grace don't like it when people show them up
It's very true.
Their arrogance knows no bounds
They wanted their own name to be prominent for sure
100%
@@Chadi those bastards. How dare they want to do succeed.
too bad that the videos of Euclides Pereira's struggles were lost
The Gracie's in the typical fashion had the film of Waldemar knocking out Helio, erased from the internet
I want to see if the media has it
Kicks to the head were then outlawed in the Gracie challenge, once Helio was defeated by one.
@@alanguages 😂😂😂😂😂
@@alanguages hahaha
@@jestfullgremblim8002 The crazy part was it was true. Kicks to the head, during a Gracie challenge weren't allowed, only after Helio was beaten by Santana.
Thank you for sharing
You forgot his Luta Livre backgrund
Great video. I found a lot info in bjj heroes and in gtr.
I'll check
Great video Chadi! Salvador is my father's home state. A beautiful melting pot of people. Judo is much much more popular than bjj there
Wow thank you for sharing
@@Chadi And Japanese great grand mother. But those stories I'll when we randori at Kodokan one day 👊
Are there actually "original Gracie JJ" still taught somewhere. The end of the video looks like old school Aikido, would be interesting to learn the leg sweep stuff etc.
you have some serious material of truth.
Thank you
Buen video!!! Excelente trabajo!!!. Exitos!!!
Gracias Mario
@@Chadi A tí, cdo harás pequeños tutoriales de técnicas. Creo que sería genial. Teach me grappling es unos de los mejores que he visto. Éxitos Caballero!!!!
Great video!

It is funny to hear that Bruce Lee invented MMA when you see videos like this way before him.
Also, in Japan many Karateka had black belts in Judo back in the day, thus, are considered mma fighters.
Yeah as good as bruce it he gets to be over rated by some of his fan base
He didn’t invent mma he just said that one style wasn’t enough. Do your research kids.
@@dakotaroosa202 , Not really actually. People say that Bruce Lee invented the MMA / he is the Godfather of MMA / he is the creator of the Modern MMA / etc, all those bullshits. This is totally very far from the truth. There were REAL fighters combining multiple martial fights in Vale-Tudo matches way before Bruce Lee.
@@aluisiofsjr Yeah I know, I was just saying that that’s what he said he didn’t do anything that past fighters haven’t done
I actually thought Luta Livre was mainly no-gi submission grappling, but also having adopted loads of striking from "kick-boxing". Am I wrong?
well yea luta livre is more or less the predecessor of no gi bjj, but they had a tedencie to go for joint locks than chokes as far i´ve heard and being a Rio de janeiro region Style i am fucking sure they had some good strikes to go along.
They have very good relationships with muay thai gyms. They focus on leg locks and ground control. Bjj no gi stated in 90s before that was mostly gi. No gi bjj grow a lot by eddie and submission grappling organizations.
Luta livre is mostly wrestling
@@Marcoshary no Luta livre literally mean free fight today it's has 2 ruleset espoortiva pure sport no gi, and the mma part. Luta livre is the original no gi art of Brazil
Luta Livre means free wrestle. It began when American Catch Wrestling migrated to Brazil only they call it Luta Livre rather than Catch Wrestle. Luta Livre had a rivalry with Gracie BJJ. Rufino Dos Santos was a Lute Livre practitioner who defeated Carlos Gracie in a grappling challenge match so, to eliminate the threat to Gracie BJJ, Carlos, Helio and another Gracie later jumped Rufino in the street and beat him w/a pipe then after beating him badly Helio tore his arm out of the rotator cuff crippling him. Being rich, white, men and Rufino being poor, black, man the Gracies never served much time for it. Only thing worse for your health than losing to the Gracies was beating the Gracies cause they had the thug-life mentality.
Were there no holds barred fights in north american or europe during the early 1900s. Were they called rough and tumble?
Yup. I think the Art of Kenpo talks about that on his channel
What happened to Santanna afterwards
My grandfather lost to him once.
Luta livre is wrestling
Gi, no-gi, and vale tudo/MMA. That's the trifecta.
100%
The legend is actually Carlson.
Nope he's a cheat and a liar santana is the best
Five stars !! 🖐👺
