  • Here are at least 3 effective tips to help you finish your Rear Naked Choke once you've achieved Back Mount in BJJ. I did this move in the No Gi, but it works fine in Gi as well.
    The biggest problem for me when it comes to finishing the Rear Naked Choke in BJJ is the fact that once you've got the Back Mount. People become ultra defensive and will immediately grab the arm that you're going to use to choke them.
    Over the years I've struggle with this. Then there was one day when I was rolling with a big strong guy who had a traps up to his ears and didn't have very much neck to choke.
    In addition, he was really strong and would lock onto my arm and I found it really hard to get the grip to choke.
    So on a spur of the moment decision during one of our rolls during a BJJ training session. I just pulled the choking arm out so he couldn't grab it.
    Then I lifted his chin.
    And bam! I was able to finish the Rear Naked Choke.
    I call this Flying Under the Radar with your grips. What I mean is, placing your body in such a way that you sort of mask your eventual intention.
    Instead of getting a strong grip early and selling it too quick where your partner or opponent becomes aware of it. I try to hide the grip so that my opponent doesn't become aware of it until the submission or BJJ technique is already underway.
    I've also included 3 Rear Naked Choke variation that I've used in BJJ competitions and training over the years.
    I hope all the details in this video help you hit the Rear Naked Choke more effectively in your Brazilian Jiujitsu training or future competitions.
    They're simple tips so they should be easy to implement.
    Thanks for watching!

      hahaha agreed but he isn't doing it for comedic value, another person's arm wrapped around your neck is not a good place to be and it makes you gag even at fairly light pressure levels.

    Just another tip, if you lock up the choking arm and their head isn't straight, you can use your free hand to push their chin in line with your choking arms elbow, aligning the arteris. You won't really have to do that though.
    Good video! I definitely learnt a lot from this!

    Possibly a dumb question, but is rnc suppoused to hurt your windpipe like REALLY and afterwards make drinking and eating painful due to pain in your throath?
    Beign a beginer (6 weeks in, twice a week) and 43 year old I suppouse younger and better want to try some submissions with me that they couldn't pull off as easily with more experienced guys (and with me knowing one takedown from standing position that really isn't hard :D).
    I'm fine with that, can't really get better fast and getting demolished by nasty submissions is a experience, but this choke I got received kinda left me wondering wether it was a failed rnc or something else, the guy did say it was suppoused to be rnc, but my hurting windpipe kinda disagrees a bit with that...

    Thanx, I've never seen the "half-back" used before but it makes perfect sense once you described its purpose.
    Would you prefer the half-back to hold your training partner as opposed to a "figure four" body lock using your legs when you have the back and in both cases, after you've scored your points in a points competition. Is it just a matter of personal choice or does one provide more stability and/or options once you've taken their back?

    • @Chewjitsu
      @Chewjitsu  7 років тому +3

      I don't use the figure 4. My legs are too short in most cases. Plus I don't like the lack of mobility associated with it.
      Chad uses it though and loves it.

      There is a purple belt at the gym that uses body lock... its miserable, when he gets it and squeezes, I cant breathe, lol.

    • @marceldouwstra5847
      @marceldouwstra5847 7 років тому +2

      I love it because it really restrains your opponents breathing and at the same time allows me to concentrate more on my arms/grips since I don't have to retain my hooks.
