Been having a lot of fun in the Viggen lately, if you have suggestions for another video in the future let me know in the comment section below. Thank you guys for watching and I'll see you in the next one.
F-4U Corsair VS MIG-15
Please reenact this historic dogfight👍
During the Korean War U.S. Prop Planes shot down MIG's on a couple occasions-- The Hawker Sea Fury shot down a MIG-15 and The AU4 Corsair also shot down a MIG-15! Vietnam-- A-1 Skyraider shoots down MIG-17 on two separate occasions!!
You could even do a short Documentary before the fight😁✌
i told you the viggen was an interesting aircraft. i wonder if as a last trick of desperation in the sleeve you can use the reverse trust in fly to slow down fast transitioning from a fast 1 circle battle to a slow one. of course you cash everything in slowing down... the viggen love to be fast and high
I think we can all agree the real MVP in this fight was Sven Bangstrum, and his mighty engine hammer!!!!! We Salute you Sven!!!!!!
Actually it was joakim brodén banging his knee
Sven Dosen't use a hammer... he pounds on engines with a snow shovel.
New Viggen Pilot: I heard these engines are prone to compressor stall... Is there a cockpit indicator?
Crew Chief: Um, yeah... It's an audible warning.
There is a cockpit indicator, that beeping, and that banging. The computer also reports you if you stay above a certain AoA for over like 0.5 seconds
I have to say that I'm impressed. I didn't know that Whirlpool made jet engines. Someone has to fix that constant, unbalanced load though. Try distributing your clothes more evenly in the tumbler or washing bin.
😁😅🤣
Then we have the long gone company, English Electric. Well known for the Canberra, and of course, the Lightning interceptor. EE were also known for doing domestic appliances, such as the Twin Tub machines, always Intercepting the dirty laundry, and from what I can gather, making a "dog's dinner" of it in the mangler section.
Underrated comment 👌🏼
That unbalanced load will cause a compressor stall.
"Idk if you guys can hear this, but my compressor stalls are making a beat; it's not just a rhythm, it's a *beat*."
[death metal washing machine]
As it turns out the Swedish man, Sven, in the trunk of every Viggen, just doesn’t like sharp turns
Correct!
And he bangs on the cockpit with a hammer when he's upset...
Not a fan at all pf those hard g forces
I heard 23° AOA is optimal if the pilot does more he will get hit by a blade in the stick.
The interceptor version, the JA-37, had an extra compressor stage and a few aerodynamic mods to be able to dogfight properly. I’d love that version to be added to DCS. Multifunction displays and a modern puls dopler radar…
We need this
@@jungletroll3844 war thunder has that version lol
@@sinxsideways5900 WT Viggen (along with most jets) seems a bit strange at high AoA
@@fexilsehn6445 draken and mirage and f5 seem to fly good at high AoA not sure about other fighters
@@sinxsideways5900 yes, they fly well at high AoA, but that's exactly what's so strange, they fly almost too well.
With how well you did in the attack viggen I would LOVE to see DCS get the actual fighter variant that had the much upgraded engine that stalled incredibly less.
Yes, I agree. I would love to see the JA 37 variant
Some of the systems are still used in the gripen so I think it's too classified to be in dcs
@@badgermcbadger1968 What, and the F-18 isn't?
@@CockatooDude the f18 in dcs doesnt have all of the modern systems that are used now
Dude, you need to either give Sven a raise or get him some extra help back there...
"I say I give you a bottle of Vodka."
"Nope."
"Plus a new hammer to bang on the fans and cockpit."
"No deal!"
"... Maybe two bottles? And a free sauna trip?"
"Keep raising."
"A raise? A new friend? A woman, maybe?"
"I'm interested... But it's not enough!"
" *sigh* How about eating lunch at IKEA?"
"DEAL!"
*CLANG. CLANG*
Been loving the Viggen content, it's an incredible aircraft that I only found out existed recently and I love learning about planes I've never heard of before
"...and my IKEA engine is not liking it!" Very amused! That said, there must be *some* way to fly the Viggen without constantly compressor stalling!
Nice round shapes is what I feel like could be good.... But I don't even play DCS, I just love the content and hopefully learn something useful about fighting in aircraft
Pulling high AOA in the viggen makes your compressor go bye bye
This engine irritates the shit out of me. Sweden fucked that one up.
There is, low, fast and straight 😁
@@TitusFFM the engine isn't originally from Sweden if I'm not mistaken. They did duck up a little, but then the DCS AJS 37 Viggen was designed as a ground attacker primarily. Hence the lack of internal guns. It would be interesting to see if the fighter variant had the same problems though. In any case the whole strategy of the Viggen is hit and run. Decades later it is still one of if not the fastest sea level multi role jet. During the cold war Sweden knew they would not be able to achieve air superiority against the soviets solely due to the sheer number of soviet fighters. The only way to win an un winnable fight is to simply not fight. This is what makes the Viggen so cool in my mind. Tree top level deep strikes into enemy territory at mach 1+. Too fast for enemy fighters to get you and too low for SAMs to get a lock.
JA 37 Viggen's routinely radar intercepted the SR-71 during the cold war. One pilot had 5 confirmed locks on the SR-71. The SR-71 flew at an altitude of between 70,000 to 85,000 feet. One Swedish pilot zoomed right up to 22,000 meters reached the blackbird's cruising altitude head on! Luckily he managed to avoid a collision.
Jaktviggen (Ja37) should be noted.
@@cortexus1 Yes, Agreed.
From standing start to 10,000m altitude in less than 100 seconds.
How about Viggen vs Mig-21?
Cant find it on YT, so I think it would be interesting to see two 3rd gen facing off.
"In War Thunder"
@@su-5727 I'm like 90% sure GS is abusing the war thunder algorithm seeing as he played the viggen as soon as it was released lol

2 composite delta interceptor 1 vs 1 should be interesting...
*Me holding my dog in a constrictor grip during the fight.* "COME ON SVEN!! GET THAT ENGINE BACK UP!!"
Keanu Reeves must have been flying that f-15 the way he dodged those rounds.
Now imagine what you could have done if you instead had a JA 37, with the more compressor stall resistant engine and built in 30 mm gun (with radar assisted auto aim, but that´s cheating, I guess). :-)
Have to make it fair :)
Yes...The JA is a different aircraft. I don't understand why they use the AJS version?
@@martinw3577 The AJS-37 is the only version that’s in the game
@@Wehraboo-fi9vm ok...I haven't played it yet.
I think instead of having better Viggens it could be great to have earlier F-15s / F-16s. Somewhere I read when selecting afterburner in early F-15s the pilot could not be too sure if the flames would come out of the aft or the front of the engines. Sometimes both happened.
In my opinion it is more fun to fly these imperfect aircraft where you have to spend some of the focus on keeping within parameters. Although it is impressive to see what could be done in more modern variants with almost carefree handling, the experience of actually "flying" is better in the older jets. Just my opinion.
Imagine this with the more powerful and slightly less likely to compressor stall RM-8B on the JA model Viggens, and it has an internal gun so no weight and drag of the gunpods, thing would be a MONSTER.
That was the best dogfight ever I watched in this channel...
I’m no dcs expert but I’ve flown viggen a lot, air to air you could say. I would never recommend going back to idle and then slapping it up to full AB after or during a stall. Neither bringing the fight to high altitudes. It’s low by the ground your engine works wonders with the extra fresh air inlets that works as thrust reverses. The AJS is a bit delicate when it comes to handling the throttle. Sometimes even shutting the throttle down to idle then pulling manoeuvres then easing it back to power is a great way to get it going.
When you lose the engine and you manage to stay below 21AoA pull the throttle to idle and then back up to full AB (fast) and it will start.
ya thats what I was doing to bring her back online.
@@GrowlingSidewinder 6:55 :/ nice flying though.
Great fight! Basically eight minutes of compressor stalls.
Sven's missing his allen key in the back there and has nothing but a hammer.
"goddamn it Sven keep it down back there"
Jesus the Viggen is a glorified glider 😂
a noisy one..
One that can go Mach 2
In a way. But bear in mind that it was designed and optimised for transonic speeds at 10 metres above whatever terrain it had underneath an as an attack aircraft. It’s amazing that it can dogfight even a tiny bit.
would be nice to have the Draken fighter version in DCS. Something that I always missed. Draken was a major frontline fighter in both Swedish and Finnish airforce, for Finnish it was our best fighter during cold war before we bought hornets from America in 90s.
The early supersonics are such interesting machines
Would love the J35J (swedens most modern variant) or even the J35Ö, austrias variant that recieved the most upgrades of all the Drakens
First to do Cobra move right? Also, about as cool looking as anything a kid could dream up.
@@christianc559 the "Cobra" on the J35 was basically only used to teach pilots how to handle the aircraft in a Superstall.
I love the Bear McCreary tribal drum soundtrack!
Oh, nevermind, just compressor stalls.
By this point, the USAF should hire GS as a dogfight instructor.
Sven is like the Swedish Scottie back there. "Stop geeving her so many AoA she cannot handel any mjore!"
Who’s flying the Eagle? Stevie Wonder????
So nice to see Viggen. Grew up with it during the cold war. It often flew tight tight over our house, heading out to the Baltic Sea. The sound of freedom.
"Knock, Knock, Knocking on Heaven's Door..." ~Sven Bangström 2021
Epic dogfight! I had a hard time paying attention during the zoom meeting while watching this fight.
Dogfighting with the Viggen compressor stalls is like a knife fight on one leg... not impossible but damn, there's gotta be a better way!
That was a great fight against my all time favorite aircraft..the F-15. Of course you know GS it was your skill as a pilot that allowed you to survive as long as you did..great way to keep his nose off you. The Viggen's engine was very rhythmic lol..almost danceable.. LOL
That was a very grumpy Viggen lol. But you held your own while you had altitude at least. That shot where the eagle flew through your hail of bullets is as close as it gets, and could have been the end of the fight right there. I was thinking the deck is coming very quickly, then it will be game over man. Overall very entertaining as usual.
I love videos where GS flies the Viggen because that compressor stall is just the best.
In the external view when you was going through that continuous compressor stalls, you could see it in the contrails.
Looked like you were sending Indian smoke signals.
that F15 pilot must have been drunk to make it a fair fight
1:33 you've entered the Matrix lol😂
"Stop putting your tennis shoes in the dryer!"
But Mah! It has a cool beat. 😎
I can imagine racing a car and then saying "Ok, my engine is back."
Hey GS! I really have been loving your videos, but there hasn't been much variety except for dogfights. I really miss your old BVR videos and I'd love it if you could bring those back. Thanks!
Hi man yes those are coming right now there is a bug with the amraam but ED are working to fix it that’s why BVR has been gone for so long
Such a awesome fight! You did well in this Viggen!
Got to see viggens fly here Irish airshows over the years amazing aircraft up close they sound super sonic even when not flying through the barrier , they do various airshows as a historical flight now usually in the silver grey paint scheme along with a draken ,(edited in real English this time )🤪
No Viggen airshow without setting off the majority of car alarms on the parking lot :)
@@secularnevrosis Didn't know they still had some flying. That's great to know.
I really wanna go to Ireland and it makes me sad I can't
@@christianpethukov8155 Lately they have done some shows with a trainer version. Not so often you get to see that one.
This is like watching a 400hp turbo civic that may or may not have the 4th cylinder racing against a Koenigsegg
that was amazing. Also i love the viggen jokes. It would be nice to see a fox 2 dog fight with a viggen.
Very interesting combo GS!! Got a new one for you: the Sea Harrier. Based on available, open-source info, the little jet, when handled properly would hold more than its own against F4s, F14s, and even F15s. May want to try duplicating this at DCS! (Also, any caliber over .50 is "shells", not "bullets"). Keep up the great work!
The JA version would be nice to see. The avionics was upgraded along with the engine etc.
There was a test done to the J35 Draken’s wing profile. It made the draken superior to viggen in tight turns etc. When that was revealed, they had to drop the tests due to the new viggen was supposed to be better. I remember seeing a blueprint of the wing profile.
Some engineering to talk about for sure.
@Ryan Kiesow Yes, the ”superstall” was a thing cadets had to push and train to control. There’s books about that fighter to read.
That F-15 was really struggling.

What dose Sven make an hour? I'd like to submit my resume.
"good job viggen. we can accelerate, now lets try to turn" Viggen: TONK TONK TONK TONK.
The SAAB Viggen is no slouch ...GS You worked hard to last that long Good Fight..Very Entertaining...
It still took 7 minutes and 30 seconds for you to be shot out of the air. That has to be a record for you and you earned it. Probably the best defensive/desperate flying I've seen on UA-cam.
The compressor stall sound like my trainers (sneakers) in the tumble-dryer! :D
Sven sure stays busy back there in the boiler room!
One man's compressor stall is another man's high intensity soundtrack.
I think the only reason you lasted was that (and no offense to the guy) your opponent couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn, from inside the barn.
The Volvo RM8 jet engine (first run in 1964) was basically a licensed-built version of the Pratt & Whitney JT8D-1, a subsonic commercial airliner engine but heavily modified for supersonic speeds.
Needless to say, these modifications include adding an (indigenously designed) afterburner to it, possibly by using the same hammer that Sven's wielding back there!
Thump thump ... brrrr ... Thump thump ... Seems you spent more time in a glider than a jet
[Being on the ground, looking at a dogfight between an F-15 and a AJS-37, and wondering why on Earth Sweden is at war with the Americans.]
And wonder why they brought the AJS37 😅
Wow... you hung with an F15 for almost 8 minutes in a Viggen. That’s impressive. I bet the other pilot was super frustrated the whole time.
It's so entertaining to see you dogfighting against your opponent and your aircraft!
Excellent video as always.
1. I do not understand why it is the AJS version that is included in the DCS, and not the JA-37.
2. Any simulation of Swedish aircraft is lacking the envirnoment the aircraft would be expected to operate in, as it is not including the STRIL-60 air defence system, and shared datalink over all assets. IOW, the attack aircraft AJ-37 shouldn't be anywhere near the F-15, or if it is, it should be protected by layers of AA.
1) AJ37 was the first of the type, and most numerous, so as good a starting point as any... unless you really fancy flying the unarmed S37 variants ;)
2) Very true, the command and communication components from system 35 (Draken) and onwards was always front edge... but doesn't matter much in a 1 on 1 dogfight (how the Viggen got itself into that mess would be an interesting story though!)
Always dropping the likes for the Viggen.
I’m pretty sure anyone can feel good after an 8 minute dog fight
That first volley of bullets shot at the F-15 was like changing lanes on the interstate, while towing your boat, and not hitting any reflectors.
I bet if you opened up the turbine engine on the Viggen you would find a pair of sneakers inside it.
The way I feel in every dogfight, pretty good I didn't die after the first turn. :)
-I like bonfires!
-On my wing?
Someone needs to replace the compressor stall sound with the Muppets' Swedish Chef saying "BORK BORK BORK!"

That ejection made me wonder if anyone has ever ejected into (or near) the flight path of a plane directly overhead and slightly behind the eject aircraft? Maybe 100 yards behind?
" is it stupid to do with the f-15 yeah" 😂😂
Honestly, and take it for what it's worth or not worth, I think you'd have kicked the eagle's ass if you weren't so aggressive on trying to attack the F-15 when it's above you. You could've went under him instead of above him and kept energy, and when you DID go over him, I saw an opportunity to go mostly horizontal and force him to expend tons of energy trying to keep up. Instead, you went vertical and found yourself on even footing again.
I bet you'd have won even without more optimal piloting in the JAS-37
mmm 1 am video from Growling Sidewinder? Don't mind if I DO
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang versus a Ferrari. Sad, but inevitable outcome.

That compressor has more drumming talent then me lol!
radar ecm sounds like a traffic sign telling you to cross the road
Brave of you to take an unbalanced washing machine up into a dogfight
The Viggen though it is one of my favourite planes is seriously at a disadvantage here, it cannot match up to the turn rate of the F-15, Viggen and Panavia Tornado on the other hand would be a match.
This wasn‘t the a2a fighter version (JA37) which would have been a completely different story
1:23 Ultimate DCS thug life moment
It would be interesting to see the Viggen fly with an updated engine that has no issues with compressor stall (in real life). Maybe GE or a PW, whatever fits. ☺
There was. This is the RM8 engine, which is a heavily modified Pratt & Whitney JT8D with a Swedish made afterburner. This engine was fitted into the AJS37 Viggen in this video. The AJS37 is a strike aircraft. The RM8 was further modified into the RM8B, which was fitted into the JA37 Viggen, which was a fighter interceptor. This engine was built for more power and much greater compressor stall tolerances.
@@andersnoren6070 Thank you, Anders. I wonder how would a modern engine act in this airframe? Something to think about. ☺

Viggen: Doesn’t have countermeasures.
F-15: has missiles....

Hi great video as always. Very entertaining! BTW what is that piano song at the end of this video?
You was wobbed on that first gun shot.
Can you put on the reverse thrust in flight? Probably would rip the plane in half but dk
You can’t, it’s activated when the front wheel of the aircraft touches the ground.
No. You can pre-select it on final approach and the 3 thrust reverse flaps will close about 25% before landing. When main gear touch down you must compress nose gear within like 1-2 seconds to close reverse flaps completely.
Dang it
Imagine going from 990kph to 310 in no time
