  • Can you stick weld Aluminium is a question that has been asked a million times. I for the longest time thought that you needed to use a mig/tig to get weld Aluminium. Then i went down the path of Aluminium Brazing.
I first failed with the Aluminium Brazing
    • Let's have a go at alu...
Then i found some success with the Aluminium Brazing.
    • Let's have ANOTHER go ...
But i really wanted to give Aluminium welding with the stick welder a go. I am most comfortable with the stick welder on mild steel welding ultra thin through to medium thickness metals. If the job gets too fancy and i get my Mig out or just ask a better welder mate.
The idea of trying out these rods is not to teach or show off it was straight up "oh haven't heard of them before, let me have a go"
So without delay i jumped on ebay found a ten pack and ordered myself some stick rods. Here we are now months later and i finally got around to giving them a go!
I really enjoyed making this video and i learnt a lot along the way. i think if i had a few more rods and some more time i could pick it up a lot better. It seems to be one of those things that takes a knack from practice.
The three things i found most helpfull were
    - Preheat the material (this caused me the most greif)
    - Clean the material
    - Scratch start the rod.
Everything else is a matter of trial and error and unlucky for me i only has 10 rods to weld with!
The end result was some cold thick beads that were not of putting on the internet quality haha

Haven't used the aluminum stick welding rod since 94. Used call it candy rod.. flux broke easy quality of weld was questionable at best.its only good as a drag rod in flat. Its fast burning you really had to lay it in.. now with the portable tig and spoolmatic mig dont think it serves a purpose anymore.

Excellent video as always, I've never seen ali mig welded, or stick welded. Only ever used tig. I'd be interested to see your set up on the mig. On a sidenote, have you ever used an ergostrip by knipex? I've got a lot of panel work coming up, just wondering if theyre worth the money?

I have never used one, never even met someone with one. I use knipex 121202. But there is the new plastic gun looking ones that look good.

I believe they were just a poor quality rods bro
But try this go 50 amps max and go sloooow. Dont lift the rod! Preheat way hotter to 750° f, 350° c , run the rod on the negative and try to holding the rod as straight up as possible and move a little dit forward/backyard.✌

Did you have the polarity reversed? Aluminum rods like electrode positive.

I did have them reversed, good tip though it was only by chance I told a mate I was going to have a go and they gave me that tip

try it with using carbon rod like tig without shielding gas (AC)

Yes you can! It’s. Hard thing to master and I am no way near mastering it at all. Be prepared for wild spatter

In a video on UA-cam inventors called 'STEL' are credited with inventing a pulsed function button. The pulsed function means that the welding machine alternates 100 Amps and then 50 Amps. This results in the aluminium rods not splattering as the flux is wasted. The rods are used in a more efficient way not wasted.
In a video by Zika a laser gun is used to get a value on the pre-heated aluminium. Pre-heating is recommended as does your video: well-done for showing a heavy steal plate for keeping the aluminium warm.

I'm kinda excited to get back in welding class here pretty soon. Just eight more days of quarentine

Yeah this virus has the world stuck at the moment! Eight days is alright half way there!

@@Finntheweekendwarrior we have been in quarentine since March 30th. May 18th we are back in business. Yet we have over 1,000 sick people in my city, so I don't know if we're going to be stuck inside another 15 days after the 18th
