The most interesting thing is that the cold insults and criticism at the beginning don't weaken what he says after, they reinforce it. He shows how much of an asshole he can be, and that's exactly why it is so powerful to hear him praising John, because it has to be sincere, and probably even understated.
And here's why this show and this scene is so powerful: Sherlock looks up and sees the room emotional and tears and he quickly cannot comprehend what's going on. He doesn't comprehend, just like he said he doesn't. And he doesn't try to figure it out. He doesn't try to escape or bluff. He simply turns and says, "John?"
Sherlock has the notes because just like the rest of us, in this instance, he was nervous. Watson is his dearest friend. But, Sherlock would only show this at a special moment like this. It also humanizes him. Really great scene and echoes of Conan Doyle.
"im not finished yet" has to be the purest form of sherlock. Man loves his friend so much without understanding how great he shares it in his weird way that he doesnt know how much he moves people by saying such simple words
It must all be applauded that Martin Freeman looks EXACTLY like someone who doesn’t open up easily and is having their deepest emotions on display. It’s remarkable.
It's amazing..the scriptwriter/dialogues writer/director/actor's... together..with Sherlock leading ...have made this a 3minute snippet that is a confession of deepest gratitude towards friendship..that can make you cry no matter how when and where you see/hear it 😭
"John, I am a ridiculous man, redeemed only by the warmth and constancy of your friendship" had NO right to hit that hard 😭
Insulting more or less everybody and still have them in tears at the end of what has got to be the most amazing speech ever.
Whoever wrote this deserves a raise.
Benedict's portrayal of Sherlock is the best I have ever seen...He is one of the finest actors of our generation...
"When I say that you deserve this man, it is the highest compliment of which I am capable".

"If I try and hug him, stop me."-Love it!! This is a brilliant speech.
The thought of pushing everyone out and then pulling them back in emotionally is just incredible to see. Amazing storyline.

If movies dry up, Benedict could make money doing this wedding speech at real weddings, lol...
Absolutely amazing writing and amazing execution.

Sherlock being confused when he was ready for funny stories is the cherry on top
Everyone deserves Mrs. Hudson in their life... What a gem 😊

This was always my favorite episode in the series because
It's so amazingly beautiful
"Why are you all doing that? John, did I do it wrong?"
