  • We discovered a bad battery on our 2006 341 Meridian and decided it’s time to finally replace them.
    We discuss should we go with flooded lead acid wet cell batteries, AGM or Lithium, charging and costs.
    The old batteries were Interstate and Duracell group 31 MHD, but we opt to replace with West Marine Hybrid starting/deep cycle marine batteries.
    Watch how we replace and protect the batteries from future corrosion.

    Hah I would have spent the entire afternoon attempting to lift that bow thruster battery out of the box in that little area. Seeing what you did just sliding the whole box out is why I hate working on them sometimes. Someone always knows an easier way, and you just showed me. Thank you :)

      @AdventuresofHappyOurs yes trie but i have 2 of the same starting batteries and well maintained and i always test them before every departure but like you 5 years is a little too much for wet cells batteries

    I had done this back Oct 23. on my 07' 341. The bats were Interstate commercial batteries, about 9 years old. I had to order current interstate model M-31HSC. $149 ech. Came next day to my local dealer. 1000CCA, 1250 Cranking, 180 minutes reserve, 99Ah. They're actually not marine, but Heavy Duty for long haul trucks with reefers, and sleeper cabs. I also noticed your existing bats were only single screw stud, which is what these are. These also are Maintenance FREE. I hope we both get 7-9 years of service. THANKS for everything you post!

    Thanks for the detailed instruction. Getting ready to replace all 6 batteries on our 08 341NSB this coming weekend. My concern was how to get out/in the bow thruster battery in that tighter spot.

    • @AdventuresofHappyOurs
      @AdventuresofHappyOurs  2 місяці тому

      My biggest concern was that bow thruster battery too. But the box will slide out once the batteries disconnected. Just have to lift the box up an inch or so over the lip.

    5 Years is really good service. I use to use AC-Delco maintenance free batteries in the 90's and would get 5-6 years of service.

      @AdventuresofHappyOurs  2 місяці тому

      Depends on how well they are maintained too. Temperature extremes wreak havoc on them. These new batteries by east penn is the old Deka brand.

    I noticed that Duracell battery had the D6 date code sticker on it meaning it was from April 2016 so you got a little more than eight years out of that one. Definitely time to replace it.

      Thanks for that info! I wasn’t sure what that meant. I actually thought it was December 2006, which matches the boat manufacture date but I couldn’t believe it was that old!

    The two batteries in my boat are coming up on 10 years old and seem to still be going strong! I keep thinking they'll fail me soon, but we'll see. Hopefully you got the batteries on sale, I think I saw WM had 25% off the other week.

      @AdventuresofHappyOurs I had 6 , 6 volt golf cart batteries I changed to 3 west marines 12 volt like you got, seems the west marines keep 13.5 volts longer, with 1 big 12 volt fridge and lights...cheeper than 6 volt batteries too, actually half the price because a golf cart battery is 200 bucks ,but you need more of them

    You're lucky you have small batteries. I have twin Cummins and I have a westebeke diesel generator also. So I have 3 8D batteries. Heavy as hell. Both bow and stern thrusters have 2 batteries each to get the 24 volt the thrusters need....

    You see pretty good with current technology. Have you considered a solar array and lithium-ion house setup? Just helping ya spend buck$! If installed properly, it’ll serve you for years.

    • @AdventuresofHappyOurs
      @AdventuresofHappyOurs  2 місяці тому +1

      I’ve considered it but haven’t had much of a need for it at the moment. A solar panel or two would help charge the battery and cut down on generator usage so may go that route when we are long term traveling.
