Just want to add my own experience, that Unseen Forces is a must-have 'next step' if you've just got the base game. It doubles the amount of content (quite literally - 2x as many adventure and mythos cards) without tacking-on additional complicated metagames, and fundamentally alters the balance in a way which increases the value of skill/planning and mitigates the randomness of dice somewhat. It feels like a 'fix' as much as an expansion.
Only discovered your channel yesterday but hooked already. I have only got the expansion with the blessing/cursed dice and would rate it same as you. I didn't know about the Omens of the deep but your great review has put it on my list. I also play the app and have all the expansions available on that but Imo there is no substitute for rolling real dice and dealing out and turning over real cards. As an Eldritch Horror/Mansions of Madness junkie, I'm late to the Elder Sign party - I just picked up the base game yesterday, along with Gates of Arkham, and have Unseen Forces and Grave Consequences on the way. I just want to say I really enjoyed your review, your insights are really helpful in deciding which expansion to get next.
This is a great video. I appreciate your ability to explain things in a concise manner and the fact that you had a very clear agenda/topic to cover. I find many board game videos can be very long and even tedious to watch at times. I have purchased the base game recently and played through it twice with a group of six. Everyone really likes the game and mechanics, but agrees it's too easy. We have had maybe 1 or 2 deaths in each game and that's it. I think the base game offers too many opportunities to add the red/yellow die or hold dice which makes the adventure cards seem too easy. I don't see myself ever grabbing all of these expansions and would just like to purchase one of them. What would you recommend has the best mix of added difficulty and new/fun mechanics? EDIT: Well, I just saw your other video about Omens of the deep. You addressed my concerns at the end by mentioning that it is a standalone expansion which doesn't require the others. Seems like that might be the best one for me to grab.
I’m hoping you might re visit this, and include the Omens of the Pharaoh with it. That’s probably the last expansion there will ever be. And maybe add a a guide of what can/can’t be used together in terms of all expansions. Great stuff!
Just purchased Omens of Ice recently and am very impressed by the transformation it makes to gameplay. And the high difficulty level just makes me want to beat the game that much more. Thank you for presenting the details on each expansion. This helped a lot with my choosing of which one to get.
I think you mean Gates of Arkham instead of Streets of Arkham, but good video! very useful overview for Elder Sign particularly because of the 'module'-type expansions.
I LOVE your comment about randomness!! I don't know why so many people complain about games with it. Seems like they just need something to complain about, honestly.
I have the base game and Gates of Arkham. am I missing anything cool from number 5-3? (haven't received them in the post yet) Im thinking the blessing and cursed die sounds cool.
id say they are all cool. Number 5 is hardly an expansion. You wont really notice it and it doesnt influence much. It simply makes boss fights more interesting...but I rarely do those anyway. Everything else is worthy. Enjoy!
Hi! If you like the base game, you MUST buy the Unseen Forces. Then you got a waaaay better Elder Sign, and you got a Gates of arkham if you want something difference.
I think there's an important clarification here: Unseen forces actually adds a lot so long as you just play it with the base game. Your adventure and Mythos deck double in size and you get more of all of the other cards as well. Most importantly, the "entrance" is replaced by four very useful storefronts (which may close as you play the game so spend that cash early!) The caveat here is that once you play any of the other three expansions those nice big Mythos/Adventure decks are completely replaced by the other expansions Adventure/Mythos decks. Also, no more shopping or picking just what you need. However you still do get to keep all the other stuff and yes the Blessed/Cursed dice are really great as well and also used in all of the other expansions.
Hello. I do appreciate this video is four years or so old but would you say this is still the preferred order of expansions? I'm getting it soon so am already thinking ahead!
thanks for watching a video thats 4 years go! I just broke it out again recently and yes, the order holds true. I might even say the game is too easy as the base alone (this coming from my perspective as a more seasoned player). I hope you have lots fun with it! Cheers!
Haven't tried many expansions yet. I own Gates Of Arkham and I really like it. I really hate the "lock dice" mechanism. Hate hate hate......................!!
I hate it when it happens. In a frustratingly way...feels that my hands are tied or something. Makes me very anxious about my dice rolls. But I accept it as a game mechanism that adds difficulty. :)
