I'm 60 now but found out at 50 that there's no loyalty from your boss or company. The other issue is co workers, they are not your friends, they are just another person trying to get through their own life. Self reliance is greatest thing to learn.

I was killing it in my early 20s. Put in massive amounts of ot, climbed the ladder, bought a house at 24 years old. Then, my company just threw more and more work on me, and less and less payroll for my shrinking team. By 30 years old I was forced to step down because I couldn't achieve the unachievable. Then, a few years later laid off. Nearly lost everything I ever worked for. Don't rely on a job.

@@justinallen3564 Yeah, it sucks. That's funny, I'm 41 too, and was at my first company for 17 years. Had to start over twice since then. I'm with a decent company now, though as we know that can change. Trying to build up a side business helps. There's something we all do for fun, or that we've been obsessed with for years. That's the thing to try to make money on after work. I just try to remember that a whole lot of people have it way worse. Also, physical fitness and a good diet go a long way twords helping how you feel. Seeing progress with that is a huge motivator in general. Best of luck man.

I never gave a damn about the companies I worked for. Never worked a single hour more than what I signed up for. Never took one for the team, none of that crap! Thanks to that attitude, I felt free most of the time. I Traveled the world over. All my life people kept telling me: ‘’I wish I could be like you.” Well, you CAN! Most of what you “think” you own, owns you and is not necessary. Now at 59, so far, I worked at 15 to 20 different jobs. Never had a career, I own nothing, owe nothing, but I was never cold, hungry or lonely and my life is full of experiences, emotions, encounters, knowledge and understanding that very few people in the west experienced in ten life times. I know that all this goes against the grain but I understood very early what you mean in this video… When I die, I’ll look at my friends lives and think, thank god for I lived!

@ Alright, my wording could have been a little less offensive, I guess. But it definitely represents my state of mind. (I choose to leave religion out of this.)
      1) I don’t master anything.
      2) It is precisely because I believe in human potential that I favor social interactions over corporate connections.
      3) Since my life style wouldn’t make for a stable and reliable income. I made a choice earlier on no to have kids. (Just being responsible.)
      4) My community is world wide and not necessarily like minded but all kindred spirits though.
      5) I have built a network of friends on several continents, that is of value to all of us. Not just my countrymen.
      6) Nobody hired me out of the kindness of the heart. But because they needed me.
      7) What makes you think I took more than I gave?
      8) As for being a coward: It takes courage to blaze your own trail and live without a net to catch you if you fall. Based on your comments, you wouldn’t know anything about that.
      9) I have never been a burden on society. I have always carried my own water, just in a different ways.
      10) I never lived in poverty and my freedom is relative but not fake!
And finally, lots of assumptions and presumptions in your comments. I have a hard time to imagine you being a rebel at anything!

I learned this the hard way. I work as an IT Project Manager and I was the hardest worker in my organisation. I was promised promotions and like an idiot I believed them. What did I do? I worked even harder until 7 months ago I was nearly made redundant. This has taught me a valuable lesson in terms of how I work at work. I started quite quitting and I've started a business. The business is slowly picking up and I've started a side hustle.

It is amazing how many people have the skills to go off on their own and have their own businesses who continue to work within the system because they have a fear of job security, perceiving security being less outside a company.
You can be laid off any time the wind changes in a company.
New management comes in with new ideas. You can be gone the next day.
Someone makes a bad decision in accounting. The company goes to the wall and you are gone the next day.
I would rather fail by my own hand than by another’s mistake or decision.
One other thing I noticed, when I did work in companies was very often the hardest working, most skilled, most important members of the company are the least valued.
They are often overlooked for new people coming in.
Familiarity breeds contempt and these often longterm, dedicated employees who literally make the company operate are often discarded as easily as anyone else.
Sometimes MORE readily as they are seen as a knowledgeable threat.
That is a world that does not operate on logic, skills, fairness or common sense sadly.

I used to work for a food charity in Birmingham UK.
My main job was unloading the pallets with a pump truck from the back of the lorries to the front of the lorry for the forklift to take off.
And then sorting the chilled goods. And in the afternoon loading the white chilled vans with the orders.
I was near perfect. I tutored warehouse staff from all their many branches in the UK.
But I was made to apply for my own job, and was replaced by 2 apprentices, paid for by the Government. Who could not lift a sack of potatoes between them.
After 5 years service to a charity. 2 years of it as an unemployed volunteer. I was replaced by people of funny coloured hair.
This is England. Am I in trouble for even saying this?

57...the Periah of modern US...white, male, straight, conservative, and elderly...last 4 years have wiped me out. Starting over...the govt does one thing make promises to get reelected and raise taxes to pay for those promises...while giving themselves a pay raise. I don't want help...I want to be successful again through merit. I want to earn it all again. Difference is this time I will own much less. I don't need it. I want good friends, peace, enough so I'm not a burden, a very small home that is paid for, and even to be self sufficient for the most part. I'm healthy. I know how to do this and I have a gameplan. Mainly I want to be left alone and my peace. I want to enjoy life without someone providing it for me. Thanks for sharing.

I haven’t been laid off til my mid 40s. It was so hard no as much money wise but not having a place to go each work day. I fell into a deep depression a few weeks later. It hit me that it was over and I would have to start over again in who knows where. I thought I was too old to start over. But there is always something out there. And you just have to have faith and accept change. The faster you accept it the faster that new reality won’t feel strange. Sometimes you have to find multiple jobs or multiple stream of incomes and sometimes you need family because family won’t judge you for losing your job. It’s just something that happens. Definitely put something to the side for these tough times

I'm a Sr Network Engineer and I've found this to be true to a certain degree. The company I worked for back in 2016 had a pretty nasty layoff, my job was spared because mgmt knew that I had the
capacity to do the jobs of the three people that got let go, in addition to my job, all by myself. In the Infrastructure field, it's more of a matter of being hired to do one job but passively being expected to do at least two or three others. The higher your qualifications (Cisco, VMWare, Nutanix, Palo Alto, VeloCloud, etc) the more likely you'll be hired to do multiple jobs while only being paid for one.
