Some assface tried to break into my 2001 ford spot trac. The person failed, but damaged the door lock assembly. Attaching the connecting rod back to the key assembly was no problem ( watch were that C-clip goes), but still was left with the same issue as everyone else here. Got the spring at Home Depot and fixed it in the parking lot. No more reaching thru the front seat to pull the inside latch handle! Between you and me Greg, Thank you much! I appreciate you posting this on You Tube. Please understand that I'm not going to tell my buddies that i looked on You Tube and found your fix but rather tell them i came up with this solution all by myself. I'm sure they'll stop calling me a Loser after that.
1999 Explorer with this exact problem - wouldn't unlock unless you used the door handle inside the car which manually pushes the lock forward. My spring is smaller and closer, but same fix. Now the lock has enough umph to clear. Thanks!

Excellent video, thank you Greg. 2) you need about a 4-6 inch light/med duty spring. throttle body customizable assortment of springs at auto zone for $6. bend it to fit on outside of clip and go back across clip then force spring into the middle hole of the door handle raising the clip about a half inch to an inch. again, thanks greg. best video on you tube for this job.
To all readers, I had this problem and used this fix. But I DON'T think there ever was a spring origionally. I couldn't find anywhere where is shows a stock spring. I think this is a "hack" that fixes the problem.
i have a question, that mechanism you showed in the beginning. My 2000 is having an issue with that. When I try to open the door from the inside it either doesn't want to open all together or it jams halfway through trying to open it. I have been trying to find videos on how to fix that/ what parts I need to fix that. Do you have any suggestions for parts/ where to find the correct information?
If you can open the door from the outside, your problem is probably the black plastic door handle. They are in a notorious for stripping the plastic gear on the inside.
Mine will UNLOCK with door switch but will NOT LOCK by any means other than Manually Using lock knobs on doors. Quit when I hit my FOB to lock the rig, made an odd noise and never worked again. Have not tried Keypad yet. HELP looking for cause!!! It is Like it lost power to the locking side only, but of WHAT and How?
I sold this car 3 years ago. About a year after I fixed the door, my power windows stopped functioning. It turned out to be a broken wire in the bundle near drivers door hinge. If no other ideas present themselves, you may want to open that bundle up and see if there are any broken wires.... that would not explain the odd noise you heard though...

Greg Bower thanks for replying but unfortunately I can’t open from the outside handle either at all because that handle has broken off
I did this fix and it worked for a while but it stopped again. The new spring is still on it

Micky Mouse door lock fix it works, but the door parts used to manufacture these explorers is sub par, poorly designed junk, High failure rate!
