RIP Harry Belafonte (March 1, 1927 - April 25, 2023), aged 96
And
RIP Odetta (December 31, 1930 - December 2, 2008), aged 77
You both will be remembered as legends.
RIP to my two dearest friends.

Time is a bitch.
Descanse em Paz Harry Belafonte 🌻💎(memória da minha mãe 😢🙏), e da minha infância. 😢 🕊💔🙏
I had never heard of this song until my girlfriend sang it to me one evening. We were walking her dog on the beach at sunset. She sang it slowly in the style of an old couple with exaggerated southern drawls. Vividly, I pictured an old husband and wife singing it to each other on their farm.. It was priceless. So endearing. Ocassionally, I would request it, but only when the time was right. Some of the best times of my life.
Lmfao yeah right
Lovely
What a sweet memory. Thank you for sharing it! I’ve loved this song for many years. Happy to know that others do too. 🙂

The youth at my church used to honor their parents with an annual banquet complete with comedy skits. Two boys, one dressed as a farmer and one as his wife performed this song and the parents were laughing until they were crying.
I just buried my grandfather today. He sung this song one day while he was drunk and I’ll never forget it. Rip Granpa I’ll never forget you
RIP Granpa may he rest in peace
My condolences ❤🥺
This came into my head just now. My Nan used to put Children's hour on the Radio, and this was on every week.
It's so very sad that we all have to lose the older people we love.
So sorry for your loss love ♥️
I miss my Grandparents, and I am 68....
Who would've known in 1959 that this song would still be remembered 64 years later in 2023 ❔ Timeless song 👀👍❗
This song was sung to me as a child. Had no idea it was Harry Belafonte and Odetta. Wow, Legends!
It’s not theirs, it’s an old German children song
Although Harry Belafonte is one of the more well-known "Henrys," this song predates him by centuries and was actually sung in German first
@@blueturtle3623 "Ein Loch ist im Eimer 🎶
My mother used to sing it in Dutch. Love this version, both singers are so expressive. RIP Harry Belafonte
My parents taught it to me, too! I don't know Where they got it. Could've been from Odetta and Harry. My folks were kind of folkies. But I don't know! I think it goes back farther than them.
This song instantly brings a smile to my face and I'm transported back to my childhood growing up in the 60s. We loved this song as kids- it was so much fun to sing and was so different from anything else. It's fantastic to finally see them performing it live. Perfect comic timing, absolutely perfection from two incredible talents.
Same! I loved singing this with my sister and also with my friends. Great memories! R.I.P. Harry! 🙏🏾❤❤❤❤
Me, too, it was my kids' party piece.
Reminds me ALSO of hearing it on the "wireless" as a child. Great memories.
Me also, probably '69 or '70 we sang this in class, fun to remember!.. shame it's probably illegal "doctronizing" now
Ídem to me!..."" 🤓🖐️❤️
If you are ever feeling depressed watch this! Such talent and to see the expressions and chemistry between them amazing!
Legend has it that once, in their elderly years, Henry and Eliza went to a funeral.
Henry said "There's a hole in the ground, dear Liza."
Eliza said "Well go in, dear Henry".
The ending is such a gorgeous moment between the two of them. 😊😘
Great chemistry they had together on stage. Rest in heavenly peace to both Harry Belafonte and Odetta.
My father used to sing this when I was a child. Finally, over 60 years later at the age of 66 I heard it sung by professionals, one of whom was my first crush.
So did my fafather
A song about WEAPONIZED INCOMPETENCE!!
Gotta love it.
Harry Belafonte had a voice of pure silk.
Hey, that’s what I said
There's a gentleman I run into at Costco who looks so much like HB, he could gettitt
I think he just wanted to spend time with her. It doesn't look like he doesn't know what to do he just wants to annoy her and be close to her😂

Just was sharing this with my kids who hadn’t heard this song and watching in now I just had that realization!
The world has lost a precious gem. There never was nor will there ever be another like him.
RIP, Mr. Belafonte.
It popped up on my phone and read the Guardian article the comments of sadness and praise are neverending
He had so much talent and integrity we really lost a good Man.
I totally agree😢
An absolute loss to all humans. What an amazing man.
for those who were born after drKing..... let mrBelafonte be the example of DrKing/his works had he lived. they were age mates 🏞️
Their voices seem effortless- they sing with the ease of a person deeply breathing. Wow. What a joy to be able to listen.
Aren't these two just so beautiful and talented ?
Lovely, beautiful, beautiful people. It makes me feel so good to watch this kind of stuff.
And every woman in the world can identify with her tone of voice and her body language and facial expressions. I just can't say enough good things about this

@@drewpall2598 thank you! That's very nice of you. I will certainly watch it
@@semperfidelis2970 You're welcome, Annemarie, I agree with your first comment both Odetta Holmes and Harry Belafonte were talented on and off the stage both were active in the civil right movement of the 1950's and 60's true humanitarian. both are miss.
"A Hole in the Bucket," is a children's song written circa 1700. It is a dialogue between two characters, Henry[a] and Liza, about a leaky bucket. Various versions exist but they differ only slightly, all describing a "deadlock" situation essentially as follows: Henry's bucket leaks, so Liza tells him to repair it. To fix the leaky bucket, he needs straw.
RIP Mr. Belafonte. Sad to hear of your passing but your mark on this world was definitely made. Godspeed.

I'm old enough to be blessed to have watched this live on television and it still makes me laugh.
I reckon that those of us who got to see this on TV are part of the generation that got to live in the best times America had to offer. Most had great parents, great role models and great teachers. I think of it as America's Golden Age.

60 years since I first heard it, it still remains a classic!
Based on this I bet they would both have been very good actors in addition to gifted musicians. They both have a sweetness and relaxed nature in their presentations, seemingly casual and easy but at the same time very professional and precise. It takes a lot of talent and practice to make it look this easy!
Love them both - such lovely humour....... this song is eternal....

I always liked Belafontes soft voice.
This was my mother's favorite song, from the album Belafonte Returns to Carnegie Hall. My Mom always played this, and I learned all the words and would sing it with her. I was born in 1961 but remember it so clearly. I still have my Mom's album, and I'm not sure where, but somewhere in The Village we saw them perform this, I was probably only 5 but I remember it so clearly. Through all these years I searched for a video, thinking I would find one from Carnegie Hall, but I never did. Until now. This is the first video I've ever seen of this, so thank you!!!
i too was born in 1961, finally heard this one - sad i had missed it till now - how lovely it was
I was born 96 and my mum used to sing it to me as a child also 💗
Nice
My dad had an LP of Belafonte at his debut at Carnegie Hall. Kept and listened to it to this day.
This song has been in my head all day, I remembered almost all of it then decided to pull UTube it.
I’m tickled pink singing along.
My dad would sing this and I sing it to my son. I’m not crying. You’re crying.
yes, my father sang it to me, too
My mother sang it too!
I'm not crying. We both are.
I’ve only ever heard audio of this. So great to see a video of this at last! Both brilliant performers! RIP Harry.
This is wonderful. Her expressions of exasperation are marvelous. Such a beautiful version of this song by two amazing entertainers. My mother loved Harry Belafonte’s music and played it all the time.
Can't believe I've never seen this before. This is amazing on so many levels.
True....
Saw this back in the 50’s on a tv show.
Flashback!! My 5th grade class learned this song in a call-and-response, the girls were Liza but the boys were called Georgie. The catchy tune you never fully forget 😊
I know right…
Beauty everytime. First at 4 now 51. Just joy.😁
Wonderful.... I love his reaction each time she answers.. that mischievous grin.
Odetta is so beautiful and amazing.
This song was one of my earliest memories...as the youngest of five kids, we sang this all the time as a family!
What a fabulous duo. First heard this as a child but have never seen this until my 64th year.
ditto!
My grandma had dementia but this song stuck thru with her until the end. Brings a warm feeling to my heart
My parents sang it one night while we were driving somewhere, and that was when I basically learned the song. It played on the radio sometimes as well. This song and the one about the lady who swallowed the fly are of my best childhood memories.
Haven`t heard that song in years. `she swallowed a spider that riggled and tickled in side her to catch the fly ,perhaps she`ll die ` . time to do a you tube search . 👍👍
Burl Ives.... Another legend.
@@1tonyboat Neither have I. I had forgotten about it and I'm also gonna hafta try to find it online. "Thanks For The Memories !!!" (Another wonderful song from long ago! 😉)
I tapped in Burl Ives and I know an old lady, and it came up with it on UA-cam.
Those two songs and the "Found a Peanut" song were the hallmarks of my childhood.
I haven’t heard this song for over 60 years when I was in grade school. All those years and all I remembered was the title. I forgot how it ended. I am going to listen again. So enjoyable.
Odetta was so bright and bubbly, I would have loved to have know her.
As for Harry he was so good at his craft that the joy he brought people will last forever.
Odetta...the voice of an angel, and now Mr. Belafonte sings with her again along with angels. What can be said of Harry Belafonte which has not already been said. Gentle and strong, used his voice for good in the world. Thank you both! ❤🙏
I grew up listening to this - a highlight when my mom would pull out the Carnegie Hall album. But to see their faces while singing it - even better. What a treat. Sad to see another piece of my childhood go away, but what a legacy he's left.
Me too
Same here!
My mom sang this song to me growing up. I never heard it in real life until today and I am in my 50s smh- I guess I just never bothered to look it up until it came to mind just now. I also used to sing it to my little sister when she was a toddler and she could never get enough. Now that I looked it up, it makes sense that my mom would sing it because she is a Harry Belafonte fan. So glad I found this. Memory Lane!
I've had this video for years to watch again and again. Hearing he died took me back to this video. RIP Harry Belafonte ❤🎉
Dear Odetta was a beauty 😍😍😍
I am fine and how are you?
Absolutely precious. I was 18 when this was performed. I loved it then but after all these years its become even more precious with time, like a good wine.
For me this is the musical version of who's on 1st?
There was a televised version of this but with a conversation before the song begins where he objects to how far he has to go to get the water and tells the route and when she says hone it! he says oh, de woman gone to night school again. I can never find that pre-song bit.
@@RLSmith-jt8qj 🤷 I don't know.
*Scenes From A Slow Civil War* brought me here, and wow. It’s hard to believe Revlon paid him $800k to *not* produce another one of these specials… This was so passionate, entertaining, moving and brilliant! If only we learned from the past when looking to the future; it’s absolutely beautiful when people come together like this. Odetta was incredible, too.
Farewell Mr Belafonte..a true legend! Thank you for the memories!!

Shalom to us only in Christ Yeshua returning soon to reign over His Creation from Jerusalem forever.
I remember this song from my childhood, but I don't think I've ever heard all of the verse before. Sweet.
Such good acting as well as perfect singing
This is similar to the conversations between my wife and I as I try to dodge chores and she outsmarts me.
Girlscout song i sang around a many fire growing up! And i still sing it when i feel low! 😊😊😊
I’m safe to say that this video does all of us a great deal of good! I’m sure that Harry Belafonte and Odetta would want all of us to continue enjoying their music! That’s what I intend to do!
@Mark Honest Fine! You?

I haven’t heard this song in decades. ❤I was very little but remember my father singing it to us kids, while fixing us breakfast. Oh the sweet memories.
I had a record of this song by Harry Belafonte the late 60s. Just love this song! What can you make out of this song? Condolence message to his family at his passing. I only just found out that he helped The late Rev. Martin King in the fight for the Civil Rights in the USA! Love. From PNG
Beautiful performances, with nuance and feeling. May they continue to shine wherever they are.
He was such a nice and gentle man. Never read a bad thing about him anywhere. Men like this don't exist anymore. I'm sure good 'ol Harry is singing up quite a storm up there with the angels. Rest in peace, Harry. You will be missed.

Yes it is so sad he gave a lot back in many ways
I’ve known this gorgeous ditty since I was knee high to a grass hopper, back when tellys were not common, and B&W was the norm. Heard it many times on the wireless and on record, later on CD, but had no idea twas these two.

What a funny and hilarious song! Listened to this song over Radio Ceylon in the seventies. After fifty years, memories don't fade, thanks to You Tube, I am able to enjoy this song again.
My grandma taught this to me many many many years ago.
The biggest mistake she's ever made. I still drive her nuts with it every chance I get. It's been 12 years since she taught me the song.
Harry Belafonte is a classy artist! I can't just get enough of him!
...my favourite 🎉
I love to hear him sing with Nana Mouskouri too!
This was just adorable!
I recall this song from an elementary school play.
Listening to the words though, how does one fix a hole in a bucket with a straw?
I always loved Belafonte. This song always cracks me up.
so weird as i was thinking of this song as a friend mentioned she was putting a hole in her bucket, and i couldnt get it out of my head, and i found this. wonderful, just wonderful and did make me giggle lol. 2 of the greats gone but never forgotten.

you guys sure picked his best.... and this woman... never knew who she was till now! Her nuance is utterly genius and magnificently melodius ...harry lived across bounds before this was even a concept... and as Sidney said it's 'cause they grew up in the Caribbean
I hope you're not implying that Harry Belafonte grew up in the Carribean, because he didn't, he was born in Harlem, New York.
His parents were Jamaican though.
@@frednutz1604 Harry did grow up in Jamaica. He was born in New York, but lived with his grandmother in Jamaica from the age of five till he was thirteen when he moved back to New York.
Listen to more Odetta!
I remember this song and my mom used to sing it to us. Along with Flip Wilson singing there's a frog on the log.
I've heard this song all of my life, but never so delightfully sung as this (and from two of my favourite singers, no less)!
I have never heard this song before my wife played it for me. All thanks to her and Almighty.
The earliest known archetype of this song seems to be in the German collection of songs Bergliederbüchlein (c 1700). It is set as a dialogue between a woman named Liese, and an unnamed man
I think of this song when ever I talk about my issues getting a job and people telling me to get a job when I have money issues.

I’m nearly eighty years old, but I first heard these geniuses perform this song only a few days ago. I never knew that Odetta was so beautiful, and I never fully appreciated how handsome and talented Mr Belafonte was. I’m thrilled
We sang this in elementary school with the small change that we said knife instead of axe.
Also, I like this rendition because you can tell that he's thought everything through and you can see from her expression that she thinks she has an easy fix to everything he says and she's a little annoyed with him for not having thought everything through himself, but he just goes to show her things aren't always as simple as she thinks they are.
some of the oldest version of the song use knife and straw to fix the hole
