1966 Ford Mustang Rear Brake Wheel Cylinder Refurbish

This is a rear brake wheel cylinder from my 1966 Mustang. Sometimes you can clean wheel cylinders and reuse them without purchasing a rebuild kit. First, I check the rubber grommets, they were very flexible and in good shape. I had to clean the outside edges of the cylinder to be able to remove the inside piston. I was careful knocking out the piston, using plenty of lubricant. I gave it a good cleaning with gas. After it was clean, I checked the cylinder to make sure the inside walls were not pitted. I used 220 grit sandpaper to smooth the walls. I made sure I went in a circular motion and not in and out. This helps to keep the brake fluid from leaking out. I poured more gas in a spray bottle to clean out the cylinder. I coated everything with brake fluid before reassembling.
