I have myself over the ditch in NZ a tidy example of a Stanza SSS 2 door coupe

My first car was a Datsun 1600. I remember riding in a mate's Stanza, and wondering where it all went so horribly wrong.

I had a couple of mates who owned Stanzas. Not one of them was a lasting, exciting car. They were nana cars or thrashed as cheap paddock bashers. The only exception was the Dealer optioned turbo kit. I knew a mate who owned one of those on a SSS. Factory SU draw through setup. As for the WRC/ARC history... we never saw any of those motors in Australia. Even the FJ20 didn't get here in street cars until long after it was a great race motor.

“Hope you enjoyed reflecting on the Datsun Stanza” oh boy YES and NO! My first car was a Datsun Stanza SSS two door coupe in metallic green. It was an absolute beauty! I paid $4,500 at 17 years old it was the same age as me. I drove it up and down the country side and city of Victoria and Melbourne, from the Halls Gap, the Black Spur, to Bendigo, to Kyabram to Wilson’s Prom- it went everywhere and back again 10 times over. Sadly though I was young and needed a reliable car and it became a money pit, I was no longer able to keep up with the maintenance and it sat in my parents yard for years waiting for me to afford a new motor, till it rusted out and ended in the tip run. It was a very sad day when I couldn’t drive that beauty of a runner- the smell and the feel of the car was next to none for me. Watching this show breaks my heart even more when I finally hear that she was appreciated by someone other than me. 😩 oh to have her back on the road again would be a dream come true. Thank you so much for doing such a great review on my all time favourite car! I will be able to show my kids the car I first got my licence in, the car I drove my friends around in for years, camping, beach trips, hiking, concerts what a fun car, a great sound a great drive a great car! ‘The Green Machine’ was her name, feeling very happy and also very regretful I no longer have that beautiful car. 🙋🏻‍♀️😔

G'day guys. Another awesome Club TV! I remember the Datsun Stanza. Here in the USA, it was sold as the Datsun 510, no relations to the old Bluebird based PL510, unfortunately (I think), but an entirely different Nissan (Datsun) car.

Very rare sight nowadays. I remember about 10-12 years ago when I was living in Central QLD there were still a fair few around the place. I had a 4 speed GX with rust holes you could put your fist through I bought for $50 I used to flog around the paddock and dirt roads when I was a kid.

Watching these vids from the UK, always interesting stuff on here. Although about the Ozzy motoring scene, it is interesting to see the same cars the Ozzies drove as us in the UK except with straight six engines and V8's instead of wheezy under powered 4 cylinder bangers. These Japanese cars of the seventies were common in the UK but they rotted like nothing on earth, they were reliable but most have oxidised to powder. Datsun are so rare now, if you want one in the UK you would need to import one. Unlike OZ where they are still common, the climate has been kinder to them.

Kinder climate in OZ and salted roads unheard of. Did not stop these Stanzas rusting. Worst car of the era for rust. Post 2000 cars so much better for rust protection here.
You might have heard of the HB Torana here instead of the HB Viva, but by the next model had six cylinder options and reworked front and rear. Race versions now worth big money.
Worth a search for Torana HB, LC and LJ to see old ads and the progression. I liked the round headlights better than the Viva ones.

The Wheels' magazine article to which John refers (April '79) rates the Stanza overall last compared to rivals. John's comments regarding performance refer to standing start times which mean a change up at 5,000 - 6,000 rpm which most regular drivers don't do. It equaled the Gemini in the standing 400 m. Driven thus, the Gemini was only slower by no more than 0.2 seconds and equal to 130 km/h. A much truer indication of performance is rolling acceleration where the Stanza needed at least 4,000 rpm over it's 1.6L rivals in 2nd and 3rd gear to beat them and at least middling speeds in 4th to beat the Escort and illegal velocities to equal or beat the Gemini. The Stanza weighed 35 kg LESS than the Gemini and 65 less than the Escort and used more fuel on test than all; a very poor 25.7 mpg. It put out 75 kW, not 75 bhp, so it actually had 100 bhp. It had by far the most power (the Escort was only 46kW) AND the most torque. To be fair, the Gemini was very well "run in" with 9,000 km on the clock. If the Datsun 1600 had never existed, the Stanza probably would have received a more favorable appraisal. So much for objectivity. Wheels' sometimes places a premium on performance and handling regardless of other attributes. They hated the Toyota T18; in my view a lovely little jigger with great looks, practicality and a beautiful interior. It was also well made. John's comments about the performance of late 70's cars is very true. Compare a '77 1272 cc 323 with a Mazda 1300 or a 1978 1166cc Corolla complete with ADR 27a wheeze to an earlier model Corolla with the same displacement and you'll be reaching for some ventolin. In my view the late 60's to mid 70's were the halcyon days of many car companies including Mazda, Holden, Toyota and of course Datsun.

Had an 81 sss in 84 loved the car for 5 years great handling 37mpg good seats (lumbar Support adjust on drivers side, nice red illuminated dials. BUT the build quality was poor
and the thing was rusting away super quick. Poor paintwork on the inner unseen areas. pulled the door cards out, the inner door skin was unpainted red rust. I thought the
subframe was the same by the rusty water that used to drip out. Shame, was a sexy looking car. Sold and bought an XD Falcon for the room and towing did 610k all at 20mpg

Always thought these were Datsun trying to get back to the respect that the 1600 had, before the backward steps of the 180B and the twenty extra problems of the 200B.
