UNICORN! 1978 Nissan Stanza - PA10

- Well, it's quite incredible that it's taken 10 years (but actually over a thousand videos) to finally show a first generation Nissan Stanza (Datsun Stanza/Violet/140J/160J), and not because I didn't want to. They simply are not revered in their country of origin. I certainly recall the Stanza and the SSS variant when I was a youngster back in Australia. So bold and vivid they were that time could not fade their memory. Imagine my surprise when I saw that the Japanese market equivalent didn't look at all much like it. All good though. WasabiCars for me has always been about discovering the cars I never knew about.

I’m always amazed how many JDM old cars still exist in Japan as I’d understood the MOT test (shaken?) was so challenging that they weren’t viable viable to keep on the road in Japan.
The real real REAL issue isn't Shaken. It's people throwing away still-useful cars to have a shiny new car in the driveway to impress people they don't care about. And, given that there's all that old junk sitting around, they scrap them. (The lucky ones get shipped overseas too, I suppose.) Then, given that cars don't hang around enough to be repaired/maintained, obtaining spare parts for those who want to keep their ageing cars on the road, is near impossible... which is way 'shaken' can be challenging. No parts! This is Japan
In the US these are pretty common still as Datsun 510s from 1977-81'. The 4 door sedans & wagons still pop up here and there for sale for little money. Me though I currently own a 1978 Datsun 510 2 door liftback coupe also known as a KHLA10. A little bit more rare and I'm super happy that I bought it a few years ago and in Australia they're extremely rare.
Sweet there a 78 Datsun fastback for sale local to me for not so much but no trans or motor
Nice. The styling of the 2 door versions is sweet
I have the rest of the 1978 lineup right now, have not seen a coupe forsale in forever here in Canada.
@@gusparra4037 is it the one with a hole in the roof for 2k?
@@fritzdixxon6071 nice! Yeah it's really hard to find a coupe,I've only ever seen one other coupe in person here in the California other than mine. There's one for sale locally right now but without a engine & transmission but it's a bit beyond repair, needs a lot of work.
Our man dan, getting stalked by the police again! I love your enthusiasm over the small things dude.
I'll just assume they want a photo with me. Lol
So In looooove!!!!! I can NOT believe the interior is GREEN 😍
How good, eh. LOve it
My Dad had 2 A10s back in the day. The 1st one was a '79 140J, yellow with a black vinyl roof and the 2nd was a facelift' 80 Datsun Violet in red. I remember being impressed by the knob you could pull (now now!) to recirculate the air in the cabin.
Andrew, please help me out. Did either of those have the same styling as the Stanza in this video? Curious because we in Australia didn't get the Stanza like this one
@@wasabicars I'll reply on messenger as I can't attach pics here.
That green interior reminds me of my 73 Dodge Dart Swinger!! Love it!!
I can easily picture an old Mopar with a green interior. So good
I always liked the stanza
My wife’s grandmother had a black and yellow sss for a while when we were first going out
And I would have loved that car then she traded it on a dark orange one 👍👍
Have a good week
Traded in a Stanza SSS for another Stanza? SSS? Thanks, David
Man, LOVE the green interior. Some mods I am not caring for, but she's sweet, and she's solid.
Thanks, Joe. She is certainly that.
Great car , love the manual windows , I have window cranks currently on my civic , Never have to worry about them don't have to replace the motor or the switch and mine still go down when the battery is dead ! That's a great shop Daniel thank you for sharing , take care
Ha! My old Holden in Australia had electric windows but they all broke. In Summer, I had to open the windows at traffic lights to survive. Lol
In the states these were called the "Datsun510" and they are stupid rare here too.
Those mirrors are not motorized. They are actually cable actuated, many American cars of this era had remote control mirrors like that, too. Purely mechanical.
grill and lights on the stanza's just awesome ,set back in the metal,
Yes, very unique looking. Very surprising
I'm loving this very much! 👍
They were called Violets here in Europe. The funny thing is that the Bluebird U first got sold as the Violet before the A10 took over.
About the AE85 being a unicorn: you are absolutely right! I managed to track down a Levin Lime AE85 and what did the garage do to it? They swapped a 20v silvertop 4AGE into it. There is a bigger chance finding an AE85 in Russia than in Japan! 😆
And guess what: I saw an Aussie AE85 today! Did you know they actually got assembled in Australia? I guess they did just slide an engine into it to "assemble" it, but that was just🤯
Haha. Us Australians would have struggled if it were any more complicated. ;-)
cool:). the fender mirrors were mandatory all the way up to 84 or 85, so this one deffo came from factory with the powered fender ones. but it was also very popular to put them on the doors even back then haha. that pioneer centre console thingy is really cool, pioneer did consoles like this for specific cars back in the day, theyre pretty rare to see nowdays.
Yeah, I guess the locals were getting inspired by foreign car styles/scenes and moved the side mirrors. Pioneer made those for the aftermarket? Well, it seems they did. Just surprising, and cool
@@wasabicars kinda depends on the model, but they usally offered them either as aftermarket or as an oem acessory, or both, lel. im not too sure in this case, but id guess its an aftermarket in this case since its just added tape deck to the oem headunit. the oem acessory ones were typically a full system from theyr component series, headunit included. i may be wrong, but its cool never the less haha
It's funny cause the fender mirrors are just so cool now. :) (And, wow, that's a lot of radios in that car. It's like they just kept adding more when one became obsolete or something. :) )
@@OllamhDrab yeah, thats kinda what they do with the radios sometimes haha. i suppose the two that are in and under the glovebox are a set, one of them being an equaliser, cd player or something like that, that was pretty popular over there too
Dan, I think you should save time & just do videos on all the cars there. That Stanza looks amazing. They're rare here in Aus, because a lot of the cars were exported to the middle east during the late 80's. The rest were used as a source of parts for other Datsuns. The car probably had the guard mounted mirrors & they were removed, but the controller wasn't. That fuel injection is probably the same as they used on the P610 Bluebird (180B in Aus). Would love for you to do a video on the Sunny wagon, as I've had lots of Sunny's, including a Panel Van (VB310), & a 'Sports' Wagon (WPB310). Also, isn't it great when you've done something wrong & it's someone tells you, rather than yells at you. Maybe the Police do regular drive by's, as they're old car fans, too.
Thanks for your comment, Paul. I appreciate the insight. You ask about doing a video on the Sunny wagon... The gold one? Because here it is: ua-cam.com/video/TPHu6QUFEfs/v-deo.html A question. The WPB310, is that known elsewhere as the Sunny "California" by any chance?
@@wasabicars Dan, I think it was a California, It had an A15 from factory, with the bigger 60 series 4 speed & a 3.7:1 diff ratio. The P in the WPB stands for largest engine available, like the B110's & B210's that came with the L14 were called PB's.As an aside, I had a Sunny coupe that I fitted an L18 into, using Stanza parts, & I got a novelty number plate for it saying PB310. Should have got KPB310. People though I was a Peter Brock fan. .
You know I love the green interior. :)
OliveDrab? Hahahaha
@@wasabicars Hey, it's not a great pun, but I wasn't expecting UA-cam to end up being interactive when I made this to listen to music :)
que buenos autos 😻 gracias por mostrar estos autos 🎌 Saludos desde Chile 🙏
This was a good way to start off the weekend! Beautiful car. Keep fighting the good fight, Dan!
Haha. Thanks so much :)
Nice find Dan! Haven't seen a Stanza in a few years and that was at the 4 cylinder and rotary nationals in Sydney, getting rare over here now as well.
Dang. I wish us humans hung onto our older cars a bit better that we have.
Nice one! My folks had a Stanza when I was a wee fella. It got damaged in a hail storm and got replaced by a V8 HQ lol!
7:27 nice of you to take care, have seen some Japanese auction videos where the guy says "let's look in this one!" *Doof lol!
Doh! Someone smashed a door at an auction yard... and uploaded evidence of it to UA-cam? Lol. Dude. Would love a HQ V8 (of any body style) in the driveway
Love your channel 🤗
Same
Thank you so much :)
oOOo how glorious is that!!!
Hey man. Yeah, not bad. So different to the Aussie Stanzas
Very cool! L16... interesting. HOCA!!!! Thanks for uploading a cool video again!
Thanks, man. Ah, you know. Just doing my thing. ;-)
This is so different to the stanzas in peru, even the gas tank is located different, or my uncle's had a cover, so as the gas cap, it had some trim on the pillar and another one on the other side to differentiate it, and green interior that's insane, peru only had tan, black and the early ones came in blue, all vinyl interior and an aftermarket radio. Mirrors, is funny that you mention it. The Peruvian model had plastic covers for where the fender mirrors would go and instead they'll put a cheap chunky plastic manual one on the door instead, although the pre facelift had metal manual round ones. That's so shocking about the fuel injection. We had the J15 engine with a single carburetor and the blue frying pan on top 😂. And i agree these cars are so rare, there's also one, maybe an 80-81 stanza in ibaraki. I saw it on a dealer. Also white but blue interior. But man that avocado green, i just realized I've been getting 70s stuff in that color just because is avocado green, like red is for 80s products.
I hope you've been well daniel. I'm gonna catch up with your videos now, i just came back to the US yesterday.
Thanks for your comment, Walter. Always an enjoyable read. I suspect the gas tank is not original at all. I don't know that. It just seems retro-fitted.
G-Nose. But the headlights without the glass over them. A mix?
Great Stanza!
I just checked the archives. Saw a few examples of FairladyZs with g-noses without covers. I just don't know enough about it comment. My stab in the dark is that factory original g-noses had the covers, and those who obtained them aftermarket used covers only if they wished.
@@wasabicars Now that you say it yes that could be that it´s aftermarket.
That is smart, the mileage is so low!! My ae86 is on 256098km although I would imagine quite a lot of that is after it left Japan?!? I think the Stanza would definitely look good on you Dan!!
Yeah, I'd have it. Oh, but that spare-parts nightmare though.
Loved 160j
:)
I love that car! The two stereos are strange though.
Maybe both have mono outputs which together are stereo! Sorry, not sorry. Lol
@@wasabicars You may be right Dan. When the owner has eclectic musical tastes but is very indecisive.
Awesome as always, loved the intro also👍
Thanks for joining me for it :)
@@wasabicars It was my pleasure 👍
I'm on project of one of that datsun pa10🔥🔥
Yeah? Nice
That red 240 Z it is export version for USA - Canada
Yes. Thank you, Filipe
Nice to hear Aussies say Z the proper way not like Yanks saying 240 Zeeee it's Zed .
I'm pretty sure I regularly pronounce it both ways. An Aussie, but have to teach US English in Japan's English curriculum. Lol
I have Canadian versions of this car, 2 dr sedan 4 dr and a wagon, still need to find the 2dr coupe tho.
Sweet collection you have. But, the 2 door does look pretty cool
i would buy this. worth the price.
Second generation 510 in America and they were stripped down economy shitbox cars, this thing is wonderful wow!
Ahh, the non-Bluebird 510. Yeah, this thing is pretty flash
So so nice… I’m on it… like white on rice.
Hahaha. Thx for stopping by
Thumbs Up number #195 always great content cheers🍺🍻🍺🍻 KC Cradle Mountain Tasmania Australia 🇦🇺🇦🇺🤝😎👍
Thanks, again :)
Uhhh so freaking clean 😍
Yeah, it's got wear and tear, but overall tidy as
綺麗にされてるうれしい
One in thumbnail is A11.
Hey, Derek. I'm afraid I have the benefit of having seen what was stamped into the firewall. It is most assuredly a PA10. No doubt all sorts of stuff got shuffled around in overseas markets... GC110 stamped GC111 in Australia for example. But, this is A10 without a doubt
Big stitch up, Craig told me years ago that shape was A11, then goes and proves it wrong last night.
@@derekhobbs1102 hahahaha! This made me chuckle 🤭
SSS
Sadly, I've never seen a Stanza SSS in Japan. Such a rare car in Japan
Rare stanza !
Definitely. I almost didn't know what I was looking at
Dd'oggg is your plug when you looking for rust..
Lol. Plug? Or, autocorrect? Let me know
@@wasabicars the go to guy for Japanese rust..did I spell plug wrong😂😂?
Hell Yeah Brother Yeeeeeew
Haha! Thanks, man :)

Hahahaha! Thanks, man ;-)
How much 😮
Yeah, the prices of that place are on the high side. Ouch
I seen a mid 80's Stanza hatchback yesterday being driven by a little old lady. Probably the first one I've seen since the early 2000's. Such an ugly car. How did they go from this - to that? lol
I think the one you're talking about is Europe only(??) Oh, the US and Indonesia, too apparently. Ether way, never saw them in Oz. Lucky me, eh ;-)
