Hey Josh! I've spent hours over the weekend, pause then forward, and honestly am growing more confident in my site building! Thanx for all you do! From a true rookie in site building this tutorial will benefit anyone looking to gain proficiency in building their website! God bless you in all you do!!!
I have been searching for different sources to learn WordPress, I have started with this video 2 days ago and cant thank you enough.... I am having fun and learning so much..... Thank You, Looking forward to the next video
Thank you for your guidance, I could never have been able to do this on my own.. You are an excellent tutor with the perfect tone of voice. I will be visiting often as am in middle of creating my wordpress site and blog. You are the best voice and trainer I have found on UA-cam.
You are the man!!! I really needed this, I was struggling with WP, your video put me back on track and taught me all I needed to know. Also, I often get hypnotized and loose concentration on tutorial videos but your voice and presentation was superb!!! I never lost focus, I am subscribing to your videos. The best I've seen so far!
Thank you Josh! I have followed your instructions to the letter to build my website and it looks incredible. I sincerely appreciate the time you put into these instructions to help beginners like myself. My finished product looks like a Pro did it. Many blessings my friend.
josh, thank you very much for taking the time and effort to teach. I have zero experiance, but I was able to bring my site live in one day. still have to populate the pages. your video was the very best I watched! keep up the excellent work! Leo - a really old guy.
+Leo Wilke Haha, thank you so much for letting me know Leo! I'm so glad to hear that you got your site live so quickly and I wish you the best of luck with it!
Thank you so much! I followed your steps to the letter and came up with a beautiful web site. Your instructions are very thorough and easy to comprehend, much appreciated.
Thank you SO MUCH for this tutorial. Not only do you help us customize our website but you also gave us very useful websites. It's like I found everything I was looking for with this single video. So, of course I would subscribe! Thanks a lot!
M Rodiyath You are so very welcome! I'm glad to hear that you found everything you were looking for and thank you so much for subscribing and taking the time to comment!
Wow...so impressed with your thoroughness; but also SPEED with which you use to teach. I subscribed and will be viewing most of your videos. I was so frustrated, at first, with Wordpress. It didn't seem to be very user-friendly - at first. Was confused about diff between posts and pages, themes, dashboard, and then the theme menus compared to the dashboard menus. So much to learn! But now that I've found dependable and engaging instructional videos...I'll be coming back for much more! Will be adding these video links to my Facebook page posts on quality videos, as well. Thanks so much for the quality of these videos. *Keep em' coming !!!*
Hey Josh, the tutorial has helped me greatly in creating editing my first website. Thanks a lot man you're doing an amazing job of learners teaching in a very easy style to follow. All the best.
Excellent tutorial, many thanks! I thought I was going to have to pay someone to set up a website for me but thanks to you I was able to do it all by myself :)
Hey Josh, I really appreciate the massive amount of work that you do to produce these educational videos. I'm about to construct a site using this tutorial and I have full confidence that, as in the past, I will be a better site creator because I did. Peace and prosperity to you. Art
Well done. I've viewed many "from scratch" videos. I have to say that most have been very educational from my novice standing. This video was extremely in depth and presented at my level of understanding. Thank you. ljh
this is a really fantastic video. I have learned a lot. I am sure I can now confidently have a website to be proud of. Thanks so much for your help. Please dont ever take this video down, just in case I may forget some sections I can always come back to this.
Thank you SO much for this step-by-step video! It was so easy to follow. My website is almost complete and looks great. Good luck with everything you do!
This was soooooo amazing, I am NOT techie at all and I am enjoying putting my website together, I am not done yet but I am soooo pleased so far. You are very generous and patient and you are an Excellent teacher. Keep up the amazing work. I liked and subscribed. Thanks you so much :)
***** Lola, you are amazing! Thank you so much for your compliments and I appreciate you liking and subscribing! You are very welcome and I wish you all the best!
This is absolutely amazing !! I was able to create fantastic website by following his directions and even made a few simple modifications. Josh was complete and thoroughl in each step. Thanks for a great tutorial - it was fun and a great learning experience.Looking forward other vids you do. :) P.S. I even learned how to make a child theme before starting this so as to not lose all the hard work. Again, thanks so very much!!
Thanks Mark, I appreciate that and thanks for pointing that out about addressing potential problems. I try to anticipate things as best as I can to minimize the "road blocks" that might crop up. I wish you the best!
Thank you for making this an understandable process! You're very professional and easy to listen to and comprehend! I appreciate and have watched some of your other tutorials. After watching this I decided to use Virtue Theme and it's working well!
Aloha Josh! I have learned so much just by watching ONE of your YT Videos in your Library of YT Videos and I was able to complete a website within 2 days [had to pause your video as I worked through each step of your teachings!] You have such clarity in the manner of which you speak as you explain each step, something I haven't experienced in any of those wasted PAID Lessons I spent so much money on and each of them short changed me! Never Ever Got A Website Completed no Matter How Hard I Tried with those paid courses. I don't know what it is about the method of which you teach, but it is sooooooo simple to follow you and get it done even on the first try. Your voice holds my attention and I never lost my attention once. You have a "Magical Voice Which Gently Demands Attention and Focus!" I have never experienced this with any of those poor quality expensive courses. I have one question.... I used the Virtue Theme like you did in this training video but towards the end, where you lead me to Appearance + to Theme Options...+ to Misc Settings.... There was no BLOG Editing portion at the end of that Misc Setting page as described in your video .. Blog Post Defaults ... where you would add the feature image to the Blog Post Page itself... Is this part missing from the current download copy of the WP Virtue Theme? I downloaded it on June, 2015! Ooops .. I just clicked on Page/Post Settings instead of Misc Setting and the Blog Post Defaults section is on that page.. I guess you may be asked the same question by others so I hope this accidental exploring I did will help with your reply to them regarding this same concern....' Again... WOW! Your teaching videos have got to be THE BEST ONLINE! Thank you for sharing all what you know with all of us...You are so very much Appreciated! Mahalo Nui Loa which Thank You in Hawaii! Kenneth
Kenneth Kokata Kenneth, you are absolutely incredible. Your words are so kind and encouraging and I cannot thank you enough for taking the time to respond with such wonderful compliments! Thank you for letting me know about the blog settings being in a different location, that will definitely come in handy for future viewers! Kenneth I wish you the very best with your new website and A ole pilikia (hopefully I've got that correct!) -Josh
FANTASTIC video! So clear, so professional, so comprehensive. I'm just putting the finishing touches on the new site. You have empowered me to manage my own site rather than relying on, and paying, others to do it for me. Thank you! I have another site to create and will be following your "premium" video for that.
Thank you so very much, tho I have been on the net since the 90's I am a total newb when it comes to creating a website, I used this vid to create a music blog, don't think I could have done it without ya
Hi Josh and thank you very much for this tutorial. I still have many questions, but in my opinion this up to now the best tutorial i ever wacth on UA-cam. It is obvious while watching this tutorial that you really know how introduce beginners to WordPress. I tell you why. You built this tutorial so that i could understand the difference between a post and page, a page and a blog although it did not seem you were trying to explain that. What a wonderful way of teaching! I could say many good things more, but english is not my mother langage. Thank you again. Manojiit
Manojiit Tamen Manojiit, thank you so much for your fantastic compliment! I sincerely appreciate you taking the time to let me know! I wish you the best with your website!
Wanted to say thanks for this tutorial. I can't even begin to tell you how concise and clear this video is. It help me immensely! Best instructional video on this topic I've seen and I've looked at a ton. I am having one problem though, could you tell me how to install share widgets into actual posts? I've been trying to figure it out, but I'm about to throw in the towel!
You are very welcome! I appreciate the compliment and I'm sorry for the rate reply! I would check out a plugin called social media feather. There is an older video on my channel on how to use it although some of the details may have changed a bit. It should still be a good starting point though.
I am impressed with all the videos I have watched over the past several months. I have learned more about how to design a blog than in the past. I have a question about the free Virtue theme. How do I spread the top bar menu across the entire page? It currently only covers about 1/3 of the top bar. Thanks for your assistance.
+Dwayne Waller Hey Dwayne, sorry for the delay on this but I think that the Virtue theme is designed this way and I'm not sure how to change that. You might be able to do it with some fancy css coding but I'm not so sure.
Hi Josh! Thank you for the wonderful tutorial. Is there a way to have the image slide show next to the logo on the right side of the logo (my logo is quite large) instead of the primary navigation bar?
+Magda TS You are very welcome! I don't think you could easily do that without having knowledge of PHP code (as well as html and probably css) because you would probably have to rearrange some of the code to achieve that.
Great job, Josh! I wish you could make another website using elegant themes eList and mycuisine theme. You can't find that many websites with elegant themes theme on UA-cam. Thanks
Josh, Great video! Thanks for such an easy to follow, thorough lesson on Virtue Theme. You explained everything in understandable language. I have one small problem i can not figure out, I'm hoping you can help. when clicking on an item in the home page portfolio carousel, it takes me to the individual portfolio item perfectly. Once on that page i push the little button to take me to the main portfolio page, but it takes me to the wrong page, one I have set up as a gallery for my paintings. Can't find where to change it.
Hello Josh, I love All your Video's and how you teach, you do a a great Job. I just have One Question? Is there any way to Change the Color of the Action buttons, to catch the buyer's eye?
+Gregory Tobias Thanks Gregory, I appreciate that. Assuming you want to change the light grey color on the home page icon menu, you can do that with CSS. Go to "appearance", "theme options" , "advanced settings" and add this code exactly in the custom css box: .home-iconmenu a {background-color: #000000;} replace the six zeros with the 6 digit hex code that corresponds to the color you want the buttons to be. (the six zeros represent black.)
Hi, thanks for the video, it is very helpful, but I want to know how can I change the color of the titles of the sidebar like the categories and recent post title. And how can I do the same but with the titles of the pages. thank you
Josh; thank you for the fantastic tutorials they are really great and a huge help. I have two questions; first is there a way to use images as total background in the Hueman theme, and I am trying to use the virtue theme and it is saying that the download size is exceeded. Any ideas on how to correct. Thanks, Chris
Hey Chris, you are very welcome! I'm not sure what is going on with the download size being exceeded. You may try downloading the theme in a different browsers. Also, you might try installing the theme from the wordpress theme directory but searching for "virtue" instead of uploading the .zip file. You may loose some minor functionality but it might be worth a shot. For Hueman, you can use a background image by going to "appearance, theme options, styling" scroll to the bottom and click on the "plus" icon under "body background" to upload the background.
Hi Josh Another great tutorials. You are the best when it comes to tutorials for WP. I have not check this template, view of SEO wise. One thing I did learn over the years,, Because of the template is gorgeous and and with lots of future doesn't mean great for the SEO. Yes almost every single templates creates script error when it comes to SEO on Google eyes. After long search and practice I found Genesis frame work templates way to go. They have been used and advice even by SEO Yoast as well. We always blame the plugins but that not the case most of the times when we see many errors comes up. Is there any chance you have knowledge about Genesis frame work templates to work with? Is it possible to make tutorial for it? Thanks heaps mate.
Hey Sabastian, I've had some other people ask about the Genesis framework but I've never worked with it. I do hear good things about it so I'll most likely be looking into it soon. Thank your for the suggestion.
wpSculptor Thank you Josh. Those people suggest about Genesis frame template are not wrong. After all, we all develop and launch our website to earn money online. I tried many templates with fantastic futures and come out pretty good, I mean most of the visitors loved it. But...... Google search engine never ever did like it. Because all this hidden CSS, Jquiries, Jawa scripts pops up once you put your website online. Those errors cause allots of speed problem with any search engine. Fixing those problems requires skill and knowledge. Most of us we don't have. I study quite sometimes about Genesis frame work templates and they are the one to go when you concern about speed for ranking. Upload Speed is the #1 factor when it comes to any search engine to crawl any website. The only way to achieve this clean script and not inline CSS and many others. I ask from you, because of your teaching Technic to make anyone understand. Thanks Josh.
Best video on this topic that I have ever seen!!! Great job!!! I created my own problem on the BLOG page of the Virtue theme. Intially, I didn't think I would have a BLOG, so I deleted the BLOG page from the theme. I changed my mind so I recovered the BLOG page from "trash" by restoring it. Somehow, it lost the side bar info.. ( Recent Posts, Recent Comment Archives, and Blog Categories).. I don't know how to recover this info... Any thoughts?
Hi Josh, Great video! Thanks for your clear instruction. I really like this theme. How do I add email subscription boxes to this theme and where do you think they would be most effective?
Hi Josh great tutorial I have learnt a lot. Question, how do I change the color of the previous & next post buttons on hover. I've tried everything but the default blue remains. Thank you.
+Sherry Ann Thanks Sherry! Hey Sherry, you can change it with CSS code. Go to "appearance", "theme options" , "advanced settings" and add this code exactly in the custom css box: .kad-post-navigation .kad-next-link a:hover, .kad-post-navigation .kad-previous-link a:hover {background-color: #000000;} replace the six zeros with the 6 digit hex code that you want and save the change.
Thank you very much!! One more question how can I get a separate color for the copyright information. I want the color to match d color I have on the top bar. Thank you in advance.
Hi Josh. Amazing video thanks so much for this. If I wanted to change the color of the text in the sidebar under the blog categories post, how would I do that?
Thanks! You would have to do that with custom css code. Go to "appearance, theme options, advanced settings and add this code: .sidebar {color: #000000;} .sidebar h3 {color: #000000;} .sidebar a {color:#000000; } replace the 000000 with the 6 digit hex code of the color you want the text to be. Also, depending on what you have in your sidebar you might need to add additonal code such .sidebar p, .sidebar h1, sidebar h2, etc... all with the {color:#000000; } Hopefully that makes sense. I wish you the best!
wpSculptor I actually I already figured out that I had to change it in the CSS, but thanks for replying anyway. Everyone is blown away by my website. So again I just can't thank you enough. If you'd like to check it out the address is thecomicsourceblog.com. Feel free to use it as an example of what can be done with your tutorial and if you ever need an endorsement I'd be happy to oblige.
Hey I wanted to make some of my own widgets or tools that would do certain calculations, I was wondering how that would be possible to incorporate in different themes.
Sumedh Talwar Hey Sumedh, you would probably need to hire a wordpress plugin developer to do that. Also, you might search heartily on google for a wordpress plugin that might already be created that would have customizable calculation options.
Hi +wpSculptor, thanks for the amazing video. I'm very gratefull, that I now know the basics of WP. I just have one question I like to ask: At 2:10:02 you use a Virtue:Image widget for your Primary Sidebar and then add a link to your About Us page. This link is a absolute URL in the sense that it really uses your top domain level as its description. I am experimenting with it in xampp (with localhost) which gives me other URL then when I upload my WP website to my host. Is there a possibility to use relative URL's (like with ../ in HTML) to specify links, so I won't have to change all the URLs when I upload my website to my host? Thanks in advance for your answer.
Hi Josh, I am trying to set up my website using this video, and everything has been working up until the Blog section. I have created my post and set my featured image, as you said to do. However, when I go into my setting to be able to see my posts on the home page as well as the blog page, as you did in the video, my settings for this are in a slightly different spot as yours. I have to go into "Posts/page settings to access the setting you were talking about, where you went into Misc setting, section. It is the same thing on my side, but for some reason it is not showing up on my home page as yours did, or have the featured image become fuller on the screen, as well as on top of the post instead if beside. I hope you can help me! I've re watched your instructions 2-3 times now, and have done everything you said, so not sure if it's because my settings are slightly different in this one spot or if I am just doing something wrong. Look forward to hearing from you, Katie.
I really liked the video. I'm using the free Virtue theme for our site and have a question. How do I control the slider speed on sliders that are not on the home page. I would like to speed them up. Thanks
Hey Wayne, you may need to look at using another slider plugin that would have speed options. You might check out meta slider lite as I believe it does let you control the speed for each slideshow and you can use shortcodes to put the slideshows on the pages you want.
I've learned so much from your video... Thank you so much... I do have some questions: 1) I want to change my Logo but the Virtue Theme gives me a generic error message saying that there was a problem with my action. 2) I get the same error message when I try to change or delete the Home Image Slider. Any thoughts, guidance or ideas?
+Juan Camilo Duque Torres Hi Juan, thanks and you are very welcome. To change the title colors in the sidebar you need to use CSS code. In your backend, go to "appearance", "Theme options", "Advanced Settings" and add this CSS code: .sidebar .widget-inner h3 {color: #2793E6;} Change 2793E6 with the 6 digit hex code that corresponds with the color you want the font to be and click on save changes at the top. To change the title of your page, add this code underneath the code mentioned above: .page-header h1 {color: #2793E6;} Again, change 2793E6 to whatever hex code you want and save the changes. To add Google Analytics, set up an analytics account and then log in to your account and find the analytic tracking code and copy it in its entirety. Then I would try a plugin such as this one: wordpress.org/plugins/insert-headers-and-footers/ Then you can add the tracking code to the header of your website using the plugin. I haven't used that plugin but it seems like a reputable one. You could also try more direct plugins such as: wordpress.org/plugins/googleanalytics/
Hi Josh - thank you for the guidance. I'm building my 3rd Virtue site but this time all of the images I upload are at about a third of the screen size on any page I insert into. If I add more - they load horizontally. I've scoured the support topics but nothing about this. I've increases the size of the JPGfiles but it's the same when I insert it into a page - like a formatting restriction. I've loaded the image into other sites I've built and it goes full width screen. I'm sure it's something simple I'm missing.
+Cars View Live You are very welcome. I apologize for the delay on this. I'm not sure what could be causing this but I would try a couple of things. First, try going to "appearance" , "theme options" , "misc settings" and scroll down under "wordpress galleries" and if it is enabled, disable it. If it is disabled, enable it and save and see if that does anything. Next, try deactivating all of your plugins to see if one of them might be causing an issue. The last thing I know to do would be using the "regenerate thumbnails" plugin to see if that fixes it.
Hi Josh Fantastic video and you make it easy to follow, have a question, i would like to have my main menu bar under the header image. So this what it should like, topbar slider image, main menu, can i do this in Virtue free version? Thank you Joe........
Hey Joe, thanks a lot and you are welcome! I'm pretty sure you wouldn't be able to move the main menu beneath your slider without adjusting some PHP code which is a bit out of my element. You might be able to find someone that can do that (someone with extensive php/wordpress knowledge. If you do attempt to change any php code, be extremely careful and backup your site because if you mess up even just one character of php code you can crash your site.
Thankyou Josh, great tutorial, is to follow, i would like to have a slider for my Header background behind title and under the top bar. Is this possible will Virtue, if so how ?
Hey Ausie, I'm pretty sure that is something that would require unique code that a developer would have to create. That would be a neat feature though!
Hi,thanks for that tutorial. Here's my question,I noticed that some features are absent from my WP dashboard. For example when you go to setting-reading I saw "Front page display".I don't have it.Can you help me on this?
Hey Michel, you are very welcome. If you are using wordpress.com instead of a wordpress.org version then you will notice some differences. To follow along with everything you need to have a hosting company (such as hostgator) and then you can install wordpress onto your hosting account and that will be a .org version and you should have the "front page displays".
Hi Josh-great tutorials. Just finished watching your tutorial on Divi from Elegant Themes. Do you prefer Virtue's template over Divi? What are the main differences? Looking to build a site for a finance business. Look forward to your feedback. Thanks.
nasafan2008 Hey, thank you so much! I think it depends on what you are looking for. Divi will definitely have more options to get your layouts on any page just the way you want them and also, given all the professional looking modules included with Divi I think it would be a great choice and I would go that route if you were willing to purchase it. However, if you like the demo site that I created using Virtue (to make this tutorial), Virtue is free and it would be a fine choice as well. Also, if you plan on adding ecommerce functionality to your site, both Virtue and Divi should be compatible with the Woocommerce theme.
Dorrian Horsey I haven't used the pagebuilder plugin with the Virtue but I did find this post: www.kadencethemes.com/using-page-builder-virtue-premium/ Apparently the premium version of Virtue supports the pagebuilder plugin.
hi josh I created tops menus with external links and need to change their behavior do have to be kept in a popup window as they are external and non site pages The theme in question is Hueman greetings.
Hey Mauricio, all you need to do is open up your menu in the backend, go to the top right where it says "screen options" click on that and make sure "link target" is selected. Then, in the menu editor, open the menu item you want to edit to bring up the options (the same thing you would do to rename it) and then check "Open link in a new window/tab".
Love the video, One question, - check-out page,- the drop-down " state" menu will not function., and of course this prevent anyone from actually checking out. What can I do to rectify this problem. many thanks....
Thanks! Hmm, that is odd. You might have a conflicting plugin so I would start troubleshooting by deactivating all of your other plugins to see if that fixes it and then you can reactivate them one at a time to find the culprit. Also, it sounds like you are using woocommerce so you might need to update that plugin to the latest version as well as make sure you have the latest version of your theme.
I have certainly enjoyed your tutorial efforts...I have a question about copyrighting. Are there request requirements to use UA-cam videos on websites or blogs?
James M. Whitlaw Thanks James, I'm glad you've enjoyed the videos! I actually get asked that fairly often and I don't know a solid answer. I'm pretty sure when I upload new videos, I have the option to check a box that disables embedding so if someone didn't want their video shared on other people's sites they could check that box I suppose. I don't worry about it but if you were concerned, I would suggest contacting a copyright lawyer from an internet law firm.
wpSculptor It would seem to be advantageous for you to have your UA-cam videos embedded within other websites...Are you at a point where considering a business relationship with your students who might promote your tutorials is a possibility to consider...While I have no published website/blog at this time, I'm hoping to jump back in the pool very soon. If this is too public a forum for that question, my bad. I think the potential is intriguing.
I am building my site with virtue theme but at the top left above my logo i have a shopping cart and i havent figured out how to get rid of it. Can you help me out please? Thank you for all you do.
rayray It sounds like you may have the woocommerce plugin installed. If that is the case, go to "plugins", "all plugins" and hover over woocommerce and "deactivate" it. Then check your front end to see if it is still there. If it is, go back to "plugins", "all plugins" and hover over the woocommerce plugin and delete it (you can always reinstall it later if you need to).
Thanks for the excellent tutorial from which I learned a lot. I do have aproblem however. I have two domains both with the Virtue theme both have the same specs and in bith I use the Kadence icons in the primary menu. In one of them it works fine, but in the other they won't show up. I compared the settings of both and they are the same. Any ideas would be very welcome. Thanks in advance. Best regards. Ted
+Ted Friethoff Hey Ted, that is strange. If the theme settings are identical in every way, I would try deactivating all plugins on the site that isn't working to see if that makes a difference. Also, make sure you have the latest version fo the Virtue theme downloaded from their website (not the wordpress directory): www.kadencethemes.com/product/virtue-free-theme/ Also, make sure you have everthing up to date (theme, pluigns, and WordPress). It could be a bug that an update will fix. Also, you might check out this thread regarding the same type of issue: wordpress.org/support/topic/icon-not-showing-up-in-navigation
+wpSculptor Hey Josh, Thnks for the reaaction. I do have the latest versions of everything and deactivated the plugins, bit it did no good. So, I put my querry on the WP forum and received the following reply from Kadence that I carried out and hey presto after that the icons showed up fine. Hey, From what I see, "photo-album-lightbox-photo-gallery" plugin is overriding the themes icons. I don't see this plugin in use on the other site. Here is css to make the theme icons work with that plugin by forcing the right font, you can add this into your theme options > advanced settings. [class^="icon-"]:before, [class*=" icon-"]:before { font-family: FontAwesome; } I hope that helps, Kadence Themes
jenelle forrester Hey Jenelle, that is so strange because that should be where the Virtue theme options are. I would definitely make sure you the Virtue theme activated and not another theme by mistake. Also, I found this thread with several replies from the creator of the theme regarding the same issue. You might try the plugin he recommends: wordpress.org/support/topic/theme-options-nowhere-to-be-found
Hi Josh. I just want to know if it is possible to reduce the width of the body to give more visibility to the background. can this be done with this virtue theme and how? Thanks
+Ray Funns You should be able to do that with CSS code. Go to "appearance" , "customize", "advanced settings" and then under "Custom Css" add this code exactly: .container {width: 1000px;} Replace the 1000 with the width (lower or higher number - trial and error experiment) and then click on the background of the site preview (for some reason you may need to do that to be able to save) and then click on "save and publish" at the top.
Hi, thank you for your tutorial! it's really helpfull, i just have a problem and i don't know how it come, but by creating a new menu (navigationmenu) i don't have the options anymore in theme locations, (i am not working with virtue, but in one of wordpress for my blog) and I don't know what i did wrong, can you help me?
***** Thanks and you are very welcome! The "theme location" option should appear automatically but, it could be possible that with the theme you are using, there may only be one theme location for your menu so if that is the case, it may not give the option since it would just default to that one theme location. Also, I would make sure that the theme is up to date as their could have been a glitch that an update may resolve.
+nick fonseca Hey Nick, that could possibly be done with a CSS modification but it depends on where you want the stripe. For example, if you wanted a thick black bar at the top of your site, you could go to "appearance", "theme options" , "advanced settings" and add this code exactly in the custom css box: body {border-top: 20px solid black;}
Hey Josh, thanks for your time and effort on all these videos. Im having an issue on my blog page! It seems like when your reading my blog and try to hit the "continue reading button" the action wont open more content. My theme is Kadence, please help thanks for everything.
Hey Julio, that sounds like a theme specific problem but what I would do is look on the wordpress.org forum for the kadence theme and see if others are having this issue. Also, you might try to inform the maker of kadence and hopefully they can fix it in an upcoming update to the theme that you can install. You might also try out a plugin such as: wordpress.org/plugins/read-more-without-refresh/ I've never used it but it make work for you. You might also search for other "read more" wordpress plugins as well. Just look for ones with good ratings if you can find them. The link I referenced is a new plugin that isn't rated yet so be aware of that.
Hi I am trying to create a website and I followed the steps in your video which was very helpful! However I am a little confused about if I want my home page to have a video on it which theme should I use? Ive looked and I cant find a theme yet. Let me know asap thank you!
Hey there, you can really do that with any theme. If you're willing to spend $ then I would definitely recommend the Divi theme. You can watch my comprehensive tutorial here: ua-cam.com/video/7iVl_mAY9Gc/v-deo.html
Hey Josh, how do you link one page to the next on your website. Ex. I am on the Home page and I have a "Get Started" button and want it to direct to say a page on "Start here" tab on your navigation menu. Or did you cover that in your video and I missed it.
Health & Wellness With Plexus You would need to make your get started button a link but first open up the page you want it to link to and copy the url (ie: yourdomain.com/whateverthepageis) Then, you need to make your button a link to that page. If you are using the home page buttons that I use in the video (where I have "video", "image gallery" and "contact us" beneath my slideshow) then you would just go to "apperance" "theme options" "home layout" and scroll down to "home icon menu" create your menu there and add your link when you create an icon by pasting it in the spot above "Open Link in New Tab/Window" and save the changes. If you are using a plain text button, you would need to add the link using the visual editor by opening up your page in the visual editor, select the text and then click on the "chain link" looking icon and paste in your link there and update the page.
wpSculptor Great! Thanks! It works now... That and the fact I got in touch with the theme support for my WP website and it was an upgrade error preventing the link from working for the button widget.
Hey wpsculptor, what range of sizes for images(like 3MB-10MB or 100Kb-1MB) should you keep for your website so that it doesn't compromise the load time?
Somesh Shahi Hey Somesh, that is good question and I would try to stay as close to 100kb-500kb if you can. Background images like the one I use in this tutorial could be larger and still be ok but I would make that the exception rather than the rule.
Hey Josh, This was a really great video which I have followed carefully in trying to develop my website/blog. I have viewed this video over several weeks in rather short intervals so I could stop and put the procedures in actual practice then proceed to the next area of the video, however on the ninth attempt to view video I received a take down notice due to copyright infringement from you tube. Any ideal what I did wrong.
Hey Josh, I am trying to make my website as you do and when I go to check if what I am doing is working on my front page, It just under construction. How can I fix this? Thanks in advance, Chris
Hey Chris, it could be something to do with your hosting provider having an under construction page set up so I would check with them. However, it sounds more like you have an "under contruction" plugin installed and activate but that shouldn't be the case unless you personally installed it. I would check your plugins by going to plugins, installed plugins and make sure you don't have an under construction plugin installed.
I dont know if you have covered it elsewhere but I would like to incorporate a counter at he bottom right of my sites homepage, can it be done? if so how
+Stan Blundell You can probably add a counter using a plugin but you may need to add it to a widgetized area on your site. You might also be able to use a shortcode to add the counter to your home page from within the visual editor. I would search for wordpress counter plugins.
+RoyaltyBeautiesHairstyles You are welcome! You can just click on "update" but it is a good idea to backup your site first. Usually, you can do this through cpanel with most hosting providers. Also, there are plugins for backing up your data base and website files that you can download.
Would you please help me decide what theme is the best suited for the project I’m starting? I need help to get a desired effect and navigation which are very simple, but still slightly different from every theme I have looked into. I'm sure I can use a standard theme and tweak it a little by writing some code, which I could learn since I already use ActionScript. Will you help me if I send you a description of what I want? I already subscribed.
+Fernando Prieto Hey Fernando, I try to answer all comments in the comment section under my UA-cam videos. What sort of navigation did you have in mind?
Mel Espinet Hey Mel, the Virtue theme in this video should be a good choice. Also, If you were willing to purchase a premium theme, I would check out this video that uses the Divi theme which I think is great: ua-cam.com/video/0vMO_L_aBZA/v-deo.html
Hi Josh That's just another good one! I have a question: how can I upload a vector file image to my home page of a website I'm trying to create? I have tried but failed. If somebody can help me I will appreciate it....thanks
Hey Felix, you probably need to convert the Vector file into another image format such as a PNG or JPG file. You should be able to use the same software you generated the vector with to do that. If you don't have that software I would search google for a free converter.
Hey Josh! I've spent hours over the weekend, pause then forward, and honestly am growing more confident in my site building! Thanx for all you do!

+David Madison Hey David, wow thank you so much for such awesome compliments and for sharing my videos!

+Magdalena Tados That is so awesome to hear Magdalena, I love that! Thank you so much for letting me know!
Hey Josh,
I really appreciate the massive amount of work that you do to produce these educational videos. I'm about to construct a site using this tutorial and I have full confidence that, as in the past, I will be a better site creator because I did. Peace and prosperity to you.
Art
You are so wonderful to take the time to leave such a nice message! I really appreciate that and I wish you the very best with your new Virtue site!
Well done. I've viewed many "from scratch" videos. I have to say that most have been very educational from my novice standing. This video was extremely in depth and presented at my level of understanding. Thank you. ljh

Thanks for a great tutorial - it was fun and a great learning experience.Looking forward other vids you do. :) P.S. I even learned how to make a child theme before starting this so as to not lose all the hard work. Again, thanks so very much!!
Really good video. Very clear. I especially like the way Josh brings up and addresses potential problems that can occur.
Thanks Mark, I appreciate that and thanks for pointing that out about addressing potential problems. I try to anticipate things as best as I can to minimize the "road blocks" that might crop up. I wish you the best!

you are very professional and give so much detail that it's a pleasure learning from you!
+Vickie Kreider Thank you so much Vickie!
Aloha Josh!
I have learned so much just by watching ONE of your YT Videos in your Library of YT
Videos and I was able to complete a website within 2 days [had to pause your video as I worked through each step of your teachings!] You have such clarity in the manner of which you speak as you explain each step, something I haven't experienced in any of those wasted PAID Lessons I spent so much money on and each of them short changed me!
I used the Virtue Theme like you did in this training video but towards the end, where you lead me to Appearance + to Theme Options...+ to
Misc Settings.... There was no BLOG Editing portion at the end of that Misc Setting page as described in your video .. Blog Post Defaults ... where you would add the feature image to the Blog Post Page itself...
Is this part missing from the current download copy of the WP Virtue Theme? I
downloaded it on June, 2015! Ooops .. I just clicked on Page/Post Settings instead of Misc Setting and the Blog Post Defaults section is on that page..
I guess you may be asked the same question by others so I hope this accidental exploring I did will help with your reply to them regarding this same concern....'
Again...
FANTASTIC video! So clear, so professional, so comprehensive. I'm just putting the finishing touches on the new site. You have empowered me to manage my own site rather than relying on, and paying, others to do it for me. Thank you! I have another site to create and will be following your "premium" video for that.
Pandit Tejomaya Awesome Pandit! Thank you so much for your compliment and I wish you the best with your new websites!

Best tutorial of all I have searched. Curious of your OS, Win 8 or 10?
+Mel Pennington Thanks Mel, that means a lot! I use OS X Yosemite currently.
Does this theme have any Adsense usage or display ad space?
I am impressed with all the videos I have watched over the past several months. I have learned more about how to design a blog than in the past. I have a question about the free Virtue theme. How do I spread the top bar menu across the entire page? It currently only covers about 1/3 of the top bar. Thanks for your assistance.
+Dwayne Waller Hey Dwayne, sorry for the delay on this but I think that the Virtue theme is designed this way and I'm not sure how to change that. You might be able to do it with some fancy css coding but I'm not so sure.
i like the feel your website gives.
+Darius D'Silva Thanks Darius!
hey! you happen to know anything about the memberlite theme from the makers of paid memberships pro plugin I would really be helped.
Also.. I LOVE this theme. :)
M Rodiyath Oh I do too, I think the Virtue theme is fantastic and so customizable.
Very good. Thanks a lot.
Jorge Loureiro Dias Thank you Jorge, you are very welcome!
Great job, Josh! I wish you could make another website using elegant themes eList and mycuisine theme. You can't find that many websites with elegant themes theme on UA-cam.
Thanks
Hey Terferi, I'll be looking into more Elegant Themes themes in the future. Thanks you!
Thank you for videos this very helpful for me ....
+narendra chowdary You are very welcome, thank you for commenting and letting me know!
Go to "appearance", "theme options" , "advanced settings" and add this code exactly in the custom css box:
.home-iconmenu a {background-color: #000000;}
replace the six zeros with the 6 digit hex code that corresponds to the color you want the buttons to be. (the six zeros represent black.)
Hi, thanks for the video, it is very helpful, but I want to know how can I change the color of the titles of the sidebar like the categories and recent post title.
And how can I do the same but with the titles of the pages.
thank you
My congratulations! Parabéns!
+alex dapaz Thanks Alex!
Hi Josh
Another great tutorials.
Very Good !
Thank you Joe!
Hi Josh,
Great video! Thanks for your clear instruction. I really like this theme. How do I add email subscription boxes to this theme and where do you think they would be most effective?
Dorrian Horsey Nevermind- figured it out. Just added the code as a text widget.
Dorrian Horsey Perfect Dorrian, I'm glad you figured that out.
wonderful video
+Peter Malmuo Thank you so much Peter!
Your video would be so perfect if you could do it timecoded like a DVD. Love the vids!
Thanks Tyrone! Check out the video description underneath the video for time codes.
Hi Josh great tutorial I have learnt a lot. Question, how do I change the color of the previous & next post buttons on hover. I've tried everything but the default blue remains. Thank you.
+Sherry Ann Thanks Sherry! Hey Sherry, you can change it with CSS code. Go to "appearance", "theme options" , "advanced settings" and add this code exactly in the custom css box:
.kad-post-navigation .kad-next-link a:hover, .kad-post-navigation .kad-previous-link a:hover {background-color: #000000;}
replace the six zeros with the 6 digit hex code that you want and save the change.
Go to "appearance, theme options, advanced settings and add this code:
.sidebar {color: #000000;}
.sidebar h3 {color: #000000;}
.sidebar a {color:#000000; }
replace the 000000 with the 6 digit hex code of the color you want the text to be. Also, depending on what you have in your sidebar you might need to add additonal code such .sidebar p, .sidebar h1, sidebar h2, etc... all with the {color:#000000; }
Hopefully that makes sense. I wish you the best!
wpSculptor
I actually I already figured out that I had to change it in the CSS, but thanks for replying anyway.
Your video was really helpful... I need your help. I want pages to appear on the home page instead of the blog page
Hi +wpSculptor, thanks for the amazing video. I'm very gratefull, that I now know the basics of WP.
I just have one question I like to ask:
At 2:10:02 you use a Virtue:Image widget for your Primary Sidebar and then add a link to your About Us page.
How do I control the slider speed
on sliders that are not on the home page.
I do have some questions:
1) I want to change my Logo but the Virtue Theme gives me a generic error message saying that there was a problem with my action.
2) I get the same error message when I try to change or delete the Home Image Slider.
Any thoughts, guidance or ideas?
+Juan Camilo Duque Torres Hi Juan, thanks and you are very welcome. To change the title colors in the sidebar you need to use CSS code. In your backend, go to "appearance", "Theme options", "Advanced Settings" and add this CSS code:
.sidebar .widget-inner h3 {color: #2793E6;}
Change 2793E6 with the 6 digit hex code that corresponds with the color you want the font to be and click on save changes at the top.
To change the title of your page, add this code underneath the code mentioned above:
.page-header h1 {color: #2793E6;}
Again, change 2793E6 to whatever hex code you want and save the changes.
To add Google Analytics, set up an analytics account and then log in to your account and find the analytic tracking code and copy it in its entirety. Then I would try a plugin such as this one: wordpress.org/plugins/insert-headers-and-footers/
Then you can add the tracking code to the header of your website using the plugin. I haven't used that plugin but it seems like a reputable one. You could also try more direct plugins such as: wordpress.org/plugins/googleanalytics/
+wpSculptor Hello Josh, this response was very helpful. Can you assist me in changing the size and color for the footer widget recent post.
Greetings Josh, Is there a way to enlarge the font under the Secondary Menu Font?
Hi Josh
Fantastic video and you make it easy to follow, have a question, i would like to have my main menu bar under the header image.
Here's my question,I noticed that some features are absent from my
WP dashboard. For example when you go to setting-reading I saw "Front
page display".I don't have it.Can you help me on this?
Can I use the pagebuilder plugin with this site to create additional rows and columns?
Dorrian Horsey I haven't used the pagebuilder plugin with the Virtue but I did find this post: www.kadencethemes.com/using-page-builder-virtue-premium/
Apparently the premium version of Virtue supports the pagebuilder plugin.
hi josh
I created tops menus with external links and need to change their behavior do have to be kept in a popup window as they are external and non site pages
The theme in question is Hueman
greetings.
Hey Mauricio, all you need to do is open up your menu in the backend, go to the top right where it says "screen options" click on that and make sure "link target" is selected. Then, in the menu editor, open the menu item you want to edit to bring up the options (the same thing you would do to rename it) and then check "Open link in a new window/tab".
wpSculptor
Josh Thanks for answering that easy, I thought I had to step in the code of the theme
greetings and I will follow bothering
Love the video, One question, - check-out page,- the drop-down " state" menu will not function., and of course this prevent anyone from actually checking out. What can I do to rectify this problem. many thanks....
Thanks! Hmm, that is odd. You might have a conflicting plugin so I would start troubleshooting by deactivating all of your other plugins to see if that fixes it and then you can reactivate them one at a time to find the culprit. Also, it sounds like you are using woocommerce so you might need to update that plugin to the latest version as well as make sure you have the latest version of your theme.
Hi wpSculptor I want to know how to use google analytics in wordpress and with this theme, and if I have to install a plug in how do I do it.
Thanks
Good video Josh. :-)
+swirlcrop I really appreciate that, thanks for taking the time to let me know!
wpSculptor Tell me. Did you make a video on how to put a questionaire form on a website page where somebody can fill it out and send it directly?
Also, make sure you have the latest version fo the Virtue theme downloaded from their website (not the wordpress directory): www.kadencethemes.com/product/virtue-free-theme/
Also, make sure you have everthing up to date (theme, pluigns, and WordPress).
Hey,
From what I see, "photo-album-lightbox-photo-gallery" plugin is overriding the themes icons.
I don't see this plugin in use on the other site.
Here is css to make the theme icons work with that plugin by forcing the right font, you can add this into your theme options > advanced settings.
[class^="icon-"]:before, [class*=" icon-"]:before {
font-family: FontAwesome;
}
I hope that helps,
Kadence Themes
Hey I cannot find theme options in APPEARANCE. Did I forget to download something to get this option? Thank you. Im also on time 56:51
jenelle forrester Hey Jenelle, that is so strange because that should be where the Virtue theme options are.
Go to "appearance" , "customize", "advanced settings" and then under "Custom Css" add this code exactly:
.container {width: 1000px;}
Replace the 1000 with the width (lower or higher number - trial and error experiment) and then click on the background of the site preview (for some reason you may need to do that to be able to save) and then click on "save and publish" at the top.
How would i add a colored stripe to the background? Is there a file I can modify or can I do this in the Admin controls?
+nick fonseca Hey Nick, that could possibly be done with a CSS modification but it depends on where you want the stripe. For example, if you wanted a thick black bar at the top of your site, you could go to "appearance", "theme options" , "advanced settings" and add this code exactly in the custom css box:
body {border-top: 20px solid black;}
You might also try out a plugin such as: wordpress.org/plugins/read-more-without-refresh/
I've never used it but it make work for you. You might also search for other "read more" wordpress plugins as well. Just look for ones with good ratings if you can find them. The link I referenced is a new plugin that isn't rated yet so be aware of that.
Thanks again my friend
+Michael Neal Thanks Michael. I have no idea why that happened, that sounds a bit bizarre. I would try to get further clarification from youtube.
Hey Josh,
I am trying to make my website as you do and when I go to check if what I am doing is working on my front page, It just under construction. How can I fix this?
Thanks in advance,
Chris
Hi ,First of all, thanks for everything.. But how do u update the theme? Do u have to uninstall it and reinstall it, or do u just click update?
Hi, I want to make a eCommerce with a blog, Which one of yours videos and theme do you recommend me? And what theme is the best for SEO?
Mel Espinet Hey Mel, the Virtue theme in this video should be a good choice. Also, If you were willing to purchase a premium theme, I would check out this video that uses the Divi theme which I think is great: ua-cam.com/video/0vMO_L_aBZA/v-deo.html
Hi Josh
That's just another good one!
