  • Can you use an iRig to connect a microphone? Not really.
    In this video, I answer a question I get a lot - can I connect a dynamic microphone to an iRig or guitar interface to record on my iPhone or iPad.
    The short answer to this is "no", but it is technically possible, so in this video I show what happens when you do this, and why it is not a good idea.
    Here's the deal - microphones need a preamp to get enough gain (volume) for a decent signal and a good quality recording. When you plug a microphone in to a standard instrument jack, the volume level is so low that in order to hear the recording, you need to turn the volume up, which introduces significant noise in to the recording.

    Hey Pete! Came here from your cable video. Thanks again for the info! This really helps me out. One last thing, Im actually using a USB guitar interface connected to my laptop. Would there be any differences if i plugged my XLR to TS microphone in the USB guitar interface's instrument jack?

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic  4 роки тому +1

      It will be the same. A 1/4” instrument jack won’t have a preamp so even thong fun you can use a dynamic mic, the level wi be so low you’ll end up needing to boost it and then his will make it quite noisy.

    Thanks for this video. I have an iRig HD2 linked up to my PC through USB. I just use the Amplitube4 software that came with it. It's limited but simple to use for someone who is new to home recording. I'd use Reaper but the latency with my system is horrific - strum a chord and wait several seconds to hear it. As you say, iRig is good for guitar, but mics need to almost be turned up to full in the virtual amp. I have been using a karaoke mic (don't even know the brand) I was given that seems pretty clear.

    Hello! I just tried recording on garageband in my iPad for my saxophone and I did this method right here (Shure SV200 mic). I actually produced a decent enough sound quality by putting compression at the middle and using the stereo spread preset in the producer menu of the audio recorder presets. I also layered the same recording and it turned out well. Didn't have to put gain high and although there was white noise, it was not clear because of the instruments I previously recorded.
    TL;DR: yes this method works with the right preset and layering, however it is still not the best but I did make a nice sound quality with my saxophone recording without a pre-amp.

    Big Pete, from down under! 😝
    Hey man, great video. I just wanted to double check what exactly I will need to mic my guitar.
    I haven’t been as happy with the plug-ins, and really just want to capture my guitar/tube amp tone. I might even just stop using my pedal board, and update my rig with a little with a multi effects unit-the BOSS GT-1.
    I just want a nice mobile rig, that looks and sounds a little more professional, and finally get all the effects that I kind of wanted to use. Even though I usually don’t use a lot of the fax, I might as well take advantage of what’s out there.
    So I have the iRig HD-2, Which probably doesn’t make a difference which one for this question. But since I’m using my amp with my guitar, is there anyway to use that power from my amp for the microphone too?
    (I don’t think the 57 needs phantom power, I’ll have to check again.)
    I was trying to kind of visualize it, with maybe a splitter, or maybe having to buy one of the smaller mic-pre’s you mentioned.
    I want to spend as little as possible for the time being, ha ha.
    So I was hoping to just get that 57, mic cable, and mic stand.
    What do you think?
    Thanks Pete!!! 🤘🏻🎸😎

    Hey would it work if I plugged the mic into a preamp an then into the irig?

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic  4 роки тому

      Sort of. You would end up with a line level signal and the iRig is expecting an instrument level. You would be better off upgrading to an audio interface which connects digitally via Lightning/USB.

    Mine using old unused dynamic microphone and connect it to Android using 1$ adaptor. Sounds great and loud, No preamp necessary. I tested it using smule app and do some karaoke.
    I tried using cheap condenser microphone too, the sound not as loud as dynamic microphone, but it's still great knowing that I'm not using any phantom power.
    Idk why your phone receive the sound so quiet, maybe bcs it's an iPhone? I do this on ipad, the sound not as great as my android but it's not that quiet.
