The most dangerous part of that is the fact the marshall has almost completely blocked the road on a very fast section to make the gap so small it means everyone has to be very slow - there needs to be a wider section to start slowing them down but not causing the jam due to being so little.. IMHO the marshall needs at least re-training if not sacking for such a stupid thing to do.

I find it surprising that there are no yellow flags prior to this huge traffic jam. Imagine if there were inexperienced drivers at that time, they could have easily not paid attention and fly into the traffic putting everyone in danger (which to their defense and I can stand-by it, there was nothing to warn them about whats going on). I do understand there are certain corners on the Nurburgring where even if the marshels would have pulled yellow flags couple of hundred of meters before the incident, for some drivers it wouldn't be enough to catch what is going on. I'm sure the Seat driver will learn his lesson altho can't say he done something too bad, he was just flying by like the rest of the cars before him but here I think marshels should have laid the incident more clear to see beforehand.

I'm in two minds about this. If all of the drivers were only queueing on the right-side of the track, eventually the queue might stretch as far back as those earlier corners and potentially be more dangerous, so it makes sense in cars using the width of the track and queueing in parallel to keep it as short as possible... however, there are also safety benefits by keeping the left side of the track clear as an emergency run-off, just in case someone really needs it, so that they don't have to brake on the grass.

    • @donjoe2661
      @donjoe2661 3 місяці тому +5

Agree. Micha had space on the right and almost completely slotted in but chose not to because he didn't want to be the last of those parked cars. He created a more dangerous situation for others occupying the left lane again to put himself in a more safer place.

I mean, without a good signaling system like F1 has, there is no way to avoid a crash in the situation of the GT2, fast blind corner and cars stopped after it, if the jam was a bit bigger he wouldn't be able to avoid the stopped cars, that situations should be signaled with lights at least 100 meters before the blind spot, Nürburgring is a really dangerous circuit if you are not alone on it.

I was in that sitting duck situation years ago on a Dutch motorway near Schipol. We were travelling along in the left hand lane in quite heavy traffic. My wife in the passenger seat said quite calmly, the cars up ahead are hitting eachother. I’d already slowed down a lot when the cars on my right locked up and with smoke pouring from their tyres started skidding away from us. We were in a brand new XR3i, one of the few cars at the time with ABS and the car slowed down rapidly and under control. We were rolling quite slowly when I saw a huge gap between us and the hard shoulder so I put the car into 2nd gear and headed there. We got out and sat on the grass bank. For what seemed like minutes later there was the sound of screeching tyres, collisions and breaking glass. I was so glad that we weren’t still out there on the carriageway waiting to be hit. The road was stationary for quite a while and although a lot of cars were badly damaged nobody seemed to be badly hurt. What got me was that so many people just sat there waiting to be hit. Like you I think my spur of the moment flight instinct was the right decision. Several of the people involved in the incident were very laid back about it, they simply shrugged their shoulders and said, these things happen. Personally I’m prepared to do what it takes to stop them happening to me.

I was driving the Ringfreaks 3 series in front of Misha and that was my first lap on the ring. Definitely one of the worse places to have a yellow where it was supposed to be a flat and partially blind corner. Plus the non straight braking zone and at least 60kph speed delta. Was unsure if it was only single file so I kept right. IMHO, you could have committed to one side but once the Seat flew past, it was a no brainer to go to the front. Cheers!

If inactive yellow light were for example lit blue or white, or had bright big background to be more visible while inactive it would be nice.

You are completely right, I experienced similar congestion in Turkey in the summer. Just as the traffic was moving slowly, they suddenly stopped, the back of me was open and people were coming fast, I always check 2 cars ahead and 2 cars behind in traffic in the mirror. I hit the brakes, then when I looked in the mirror again, instead of stopping, I stepped on the gas and immediately threw myself into the median in the far left lane, leaving a space for one vehicle. Just as I predicted, even though the people behind were braking, they couldn't stop and skidded, advancing towards the truck in front of me. So are those who come after them.
If I hadn't made that move, it would have been a pileup accident.

Na het zien van de hele video, de Nürburgring zelf heeft hier ook een paar steken laten vallen op het punt van veiligheid.

I'm still to this day shocked how a track like Nurburgring can't put some freaking LED lights next to the track that would automatically light up green, yellow or red based on what's going on, and have one marshal in a room with screens covering the whole track where he could instantly turn on the warning lights at any part of the track. Or have the marshals on track be able to remotely turn on the lights when something happens. Probably cheaper than paying 20 people to wave invidible flags on the track too.

I also had to brake from 200km/h to 30km/h because of the traffic jam on the Nordschleife. It was the most horrible moment in my entire race track experiences. The final gap with the front car was about 10m.

There should have been yellow flags for sure. And your decision to move out of harms way was 110%correct. As someone who has marshalled before I find it hard to believe that no flags were out. The fact you had the presence of mind to move away from a dangerous situation shows how professional you are. Bravo 👏.

I never driven on the Nürburgring, but watching your videos and I've always wondered what would happen if you went around one of the more blind corners only to come up on much slower traffic or a complete stop. Now I know. Experience and lightning quick reflexes help a lot. A more inexperienced driver would crash in that situation.

The digital safety system can't come soon enough! We had last season a similar sticky situation on the part of track while coming down with a lot of speed.

Hello Misha. There is no reason for you to apologize for anything! It was 'racing driver's instinct', nothing more than that! A very good decision, in extreme circumstances and which does not even require further explanation from anyone! Whoever criticizes it is because they think cars are just means of transport and nothing else! Those who ride buses (which are not very safe either) and subways; and forget about cars! Ignore criticism; and congratulations on the good work in your profession: a great racing driver and a lover of sports cars, engines, etc.,... like many of us, your followers! Keep faith, brother, and may God bless you!🤜🤛👍

I totally agree with you. I always do the same thing, you have to drive defensively and not stand in the middle of the track and let someone from behind come and crash you. It is very easy to criticize from the sofa at home, but to see a Cupra passing you at such a high speed, next to you, is not fun and is very dangerous. Very well done!

Dude. 30 years of track days and 50k miles a year motorway driving imho you did what I have done several times. You may stop on time but others aren’t as aware/talented. It was a great call!! I witnessed / and was a witness for a fatality on the m1 in the uk. When exactly the same thing happened. I was not going to be the one at the back and moved lanes. The 3 3 cars behind me originally all stopped but the 4th didn’t. 9 car shunt. 1 fatality. It was a wise move. Why keep yourself in danger.

How much would it be to put a radio speaker in every car to make announcements to the drivers?? How many would you need? 50? 100? Just pass them out when you enter the Ring and turn them back in when you’re done. Seems simple.

you did the right thing for that moment. Better to avoid than being in an accident that nobody wants. Look at how fast that other car went past you.
