  • Probably the only Wavestation video to feature hot air balloons and circus camels...
    Join me on a journey to discover the Korg Wavestation EX, starting on a summer evening with a pickup of this legendary 1990 synthesizer. We'll discuss the history, features and specifications and listen to some preset sound patches that show how the synthesizer does really nice lush pads and evolving mbient textures.
    This is the first part in a series of Korg Wavestation demo videos.

    Awesome videos on this oddball synth - I've just gone and bought the original Wavestation model, having heard your demos. I'm already in to Wavetable synthesis with my Waldorf Q and Ensoniq SD1, and the Wavestation sounds fun adding Wave Sequencing, as well as lush. Out-D50's the Roland D50 by a long way. Mind you in 1988 the Kawai K1 earned the nickname of "The D50 Killer" at just £599 compared with £1,350 for a D50 plus another £300-ish for the PG-1000 programmer. I never heard a Wavestation until now. I can't wait for mine to arrive. Thanks for another set of great inspiring videos covering forgotten sonic treasures and synth gems from yesteryear.
    Would it be fair to say that the nearest rival instrument to it was something like an Ensoniq SD1 as some of its waveforms are dedicated Transwaves (Wavetables) that could be modulated to some degree, although not like with Wave Sequencing on the Korg?
    Thanks for all those folk who explained the Korg/Yamaha relationship, as all we knew was Yamaha bought SCI in 1988 then Korg in 1989. There is another classic Prophet that we are forgeting as well as the Prophet VS there was the Prophet 3000 16 bit sampler. Our understanding was that Yamaha acquired them to get access to SCI's sampling technology - The Prophet 3000, that found its way into the Yamaha SY family as AWM (Advanced Wave Memory) sample and synthesis that also mixed in FM apart from the SY55/85 that were both purely AWM2 based. At least that's what we heard from our local music shop Carlsbro Sound at the time. The SY22/35 blended raw AMW2 without filters with FM but used a joystick to blend sources. It seems that a few synths also used a joystick to blend Sources/Partials/Elements, such as the Kawai K1. The Korg Wavestation appears to be an evolution and refinement of the Prophet VS.
    RE MIDI: Yes Yamaha, Roland, Kawai, and Korg were all into MIDI development. Dave Smith came up with the first draft of his MIDI proposal (although it wasn't called MIDI to begin with) and invited other companies to collaborate and develop the MIDI spec. It seems that only the Japanese took any seriously interest because Dave Smith's SCI was the only American company directly involved in the project, whilst the likes of Moog, Oberheim sat on the fence watching. The very first successful demo of MIDI was between a Prophet 600 and pre-production prototype Roland Jupiter 6 at the 1983 Winter NAMM. Roland reps took one of their Jupiter 6's to the Sequential booth, where they connected both instruments together and played each other's synth via MIDI. The Roland JX-3P was Roland's first production MIDI synth to be released. This was back when MIDI was just a MIDI In and MIDI Out. MIDI Thru came later.

    Cool buy buddy ,
    around about the same time that yamaha brought Sequential Circuits in 1989 they also purchased korg who was having financial difficulty's at the time, and needed money to help them with a few projects, so yamaha put a buy back clause in the contract, and in 1993 due to the success of the m1 and wavestation, korg acquired enough money to buy their share back off yamaha, to become their own company again, I think thats how korg was able to have the rights to Sequential Circuits wavestation design :)

      The Wavestation actually has a 'Yamaha' keyboard bed in it that feels very similar to what went in my Yamaha S30 and the DX11. So it looks like the two companies shared Sequential Circuits technology between them. Nice that Yamaha finally gave Dave Smith his Sequential Circuits Inc trademark back. I think Dave Smith instruments rebranded back to being called Sequential Circuits some time in 2018-ish.

    Great vid mate. FYI Roland's involvement in MIDI was through the founder of Roland: Ikutaro Kakehashi, who recently died (Apr 17) - he was (along with Dave Smith) paramount in getting MIDI off the ground. He was also the creator of the TR-808 :)

    It's not just that Sequential Circuits' research was "picked up" by Korg... Yamaha employed Dave Smith (who created the Prophet) and placed him at Korg (Korg was under the umbrella of Yamaha) and he co-created the Wavestation there... so this is a true in fashion Dave Smith instrument manufactured by Korg...
    I love this synth... (mine has wooden side panels :D)
    Edit: I see you mentioned Dave Smith a bit later :D:D Okay, okay :D:D

    Congratulations to owning one of the most wonderful sounding synthesizers ever made!
    I used to own both the EX and the A/D versions, but recently sold the EX.
    It's fun to play with the presets, but be sure to also get your hands dirty and edit some sounds of your own.
    The editing is made in different levels, and it is easy to mess up one patch while editing another. The easiest way is to clear everything in the RAM banks and start from scratch. That way you have control from the beginning, and it's rewarding to build your own banks. :)
    The EX version lacks audio ins, but still have a vocoder effect that works between the sounds internally.
    One cool tip is to program some rhythmic wavesequence and let it run through the vocoder with, lets say, an organ.

      Hi Dan, do you mind if I save the editing for the VST version? I checked the screenshots and it looks a bit more approachable.

      the vst is not that easy also! and sounds way worse,, it just doesnt have that deph that the hardware has! in my opinion is not worth it (if u got the real-thing) - check this controller made for the wavestation, it should work with all versions, myself have the EX version and works www.soundtower.com/synth/ws_page.htm i bought this very recently like a month ago, the page looks old but that is still solid - however the wavesequencing part i didint got it to work with that controller thats the only part i do in the synth itself

    Vector Synthesis also went into the Yamaha SY22/35 and the module TG33, in the early nineties. Those used a combination of FM- and sample-synthesis. They've got quite a lot of cool sounds!

    Hi Woody, at a point in the late 80's early 90's, Yamaha bought Korg & owned it for a time. John Bowen (the man that designed the presets for the Prophet 5 also went from working at Sequential to Korg/Yamaha & now has his own synth called the "Solara" I hail from Northern California. I got my 1st Prophet 5 rev 3 (1979) from John & visited the factory where they where built often, usually to get repair work done on the P5.

Looks tasty unfortuantly i have no more room for keyboards hence i need compact rackmounts now .

    Excellent choice Woody - vector synths are my favourite - you lucky guy !! Re the connection between the WaveStation and Dave Smith - after he sold Sequential Circuits to Yamaha (resulting in the SY22) he then headed up a remote R&D team for Korg (based in California and comprising several of the SC engineers)... the rest is history.

      @@WoodyPianoShack Thanks Woody. One of the first synths that I purchased, to replace equipment that I lost after the fire, was a Korg Wavestate. a wonderful synth but there is something about the Wavestation that the wavestate dose not quite capture ( keyboard for one ). I started by setting up the basics 2 synths a mixer, microphone etc but I’m afraid that the collection has grown considerably (out of control to be honest). I have found that the cards for the Wavestation are quite expensive to replace and will push me into learning more about Sys X.
      I really enjoy and appreciate your opinions, comments and your channel. Kind regards Mick.

    So glad this synth is getting some attention. The second hand prices are probably gonna start to climb when people start hearing these things on UA-cam. I bought my first Wavestation new in 91' and later had it upgraded to the EX level. Mine is also missing one of the letters that came off over time. I actually own 2 Ex Keyboards, the SR version and of course the PC Legacy and iPad app. Obviously I'm a bit of a fanatic so I'm more than a bit biased about my feelings towards this great instrument.
    If my memory serves me, when Yamaha bought out the SCI R&D department which had recently built the Prophet VS, they were using a type of Synth on a chip for all their equipment. Much like the later Oberheim synths and SCI synths did. The difference was that while the Matrix 6 or SCI Split 8 used chips with resonant filters, Yamaha's synth on a chip did not have the resonance feature, only the Low Pass EQ type filter. Since Korg was working under/with Yamaha at this point in time, the M1 and many synths that followed like the T series, the 0W series were lacking resonant filters. Before that synths like the DW8000 still had resonant filters.
    Anyway, good job on you to get a physical keyboard version with the vector joystick. The SR and the app are lacking that access without mapping it to a midi controller of some kind, or sliding a finger on the app while playing. I actually purchased a Yamaha TG-33 just so I'd have another physical joystick controller to play the Wavestation SR. Happy I did because that's a nice little beast in it's own right. No resonant filter there either, in fact, no filtering at all. The TG-33 series does allow you to play and record the vector moments which I wish the Korg did, allowing you to program filter type sweeps by having radically different tones on the 4 corners and playing the joystick while holding down a note to record it's movement and saving that envelope with the preset. You can manually create the joystick envelope on the Korg, which is the "trick" to setting up a resonant filter sweep sound. Set up 4 different Resonant type waves on the 4 corners of the vector, and program a vector envelope to give you a close to resonant filter sweep. Just don't expect anywhere near self oscillation of course. :-)

    • @WoodyPianoShack
      @WoodyPianoShack  7 років тому

      had to google that tg-33, thought i knew it all but that unit has totally passed me by. thanks for the thoughtful comment with all the useful information, i appreciate your contribution.

    My first synth. I love it. Got it due to seeing Tony Banks (of Genesis) use it a lot.. not just as a synth, but also as a midi controller.
    I also have the M1 and the 01/W here. Feels nice to own all of the Korg "black boxes" ;)
    Perhaps a bit dated sound-wise, but I still think they are magnificent and very usable. 80's and early 90's sounds are indeed coming back in style :)

  • @dvamateur
    @dvamateur 4 роки тому

    Yamaha owned controlling stock packet of Korg at that time. The Wavestation has a Yamaha keybed, if you don't believe, just open it up and see. And that's good, because Yamaha keybeds just work and work, so both your velocity and aftertouch are going to work fine.
    Now, first MIDI equipped instruments were Sequential Circuits Prophet-600 and Roland Jupiter-6. They hooked these up via MIDI an made a demo at the 1983 NAMM show (the show is in January of each year). Yamaha also included MIDI with their upcoming DX7, later the same year.

    Thanks for this excellent first demo! I was also very taken by the release of the Wavestation never owned the real thing but i'm very pleased with the VST-version at the moment.
    Editing is easier as it is visual. What this Legacy version also has, is all the PCM-cards / presets including some very new waves and a resonant filter for a warmer and more analog sound. ;-)
    As i've read in a very early magazine-review, the drawback to this hardware version, is the latency which increases when your waves or more complex and in doing so, use up more voices.
    To this day i'm still in a very nostalgic mood and on the lookout for early nineties synthesizers such as the Yamaha SY-77 and the Korg O1/W which was released around the same time as the Wavestation and had a curious new effect called waveshaping. This effect makes presets sound more natural or even other worldly. ;-) Maybe you can snag one up in the near future and demo this as well.
    Anyway, i'm very pleased to discover your channel and reviews / demos and wish you lots of fun playing these beauties.

    Sequential was bought by Yamaha, and I understand the team worked on the Yamaha sy22 ans subsequent SYs, which also used the vector morphing. I think Korg Wavestation came out in the same year, but at the time Yamaha also owned about 40% of Korg, so they might have used the same team!

  • @ChrisCebelenski
    @ChrisCebelenski 7 років тому

    Wow, noticed the case right away- now I want one! Nice clean Wavestation too - even minus the X graphic. I've got the software Wavestation plugin, and also a rack-mount Wavestation AD - not really too much difference and software is usually more convenient. The AD has a neat ability to process external audio through the unit effects and filter. There is another version of the rackmount that has a lessor ability to edit, but includes a lot more preset banks. The keyboard is also very good for a synth of the era - most Korgs and Yamaha's of the time had good keybeds.

    • @WoodyPianoShack
      @WoodyPianoShack  7 років тому

      maybe the vst will prove to be the best of the bunch, since the Ui on the hardware is not too generous. you'll need a controller that can replicate the joystick function though, or is that just a gimmick on the hardware?

    • @ChrisCebelenski
      @ChrisCebelenski 7 років тому

      The joystick works similarly to that of the D50 - it allows you to blend up to four parts. I believe the motion sends out CC MIDI message (I might be mis-remembering - I don't have the manual handy at the moment.) The real selling point was the wave sequences themselves, which briefly appeared in boards like the D50 (digital native dance) and the DW8000, but the Wavestation takes them down the road and over the hills into what was later called "vector synthesis". The wavestation team in fact were the same team behind the Sequential vector keyboard (Prophet VS) and later the Yamaha SY-22.

    Thanks, nice video of one of My favorite synts. :-) In fact I cary one around everyday, on My iPhone. The only problem with it is to sync the loops in a Daw, or in a band! But it sounds amazing when you play it like this on your own. 👍👍

    The Wavestation is an often overlooked classic and an awesome synth.
    If you like this, track down a Korg Karma. It will blow you mind or if funds allow, a Korg Oasis which has Karma and Wavestation technology. Keep playing

      And when Korg was part owned by Yamaha they produced the Korg DS8 synth which was essentially a DX11 with digital effects section.

    If i would have to take ONE SINGLE digital synthesizer to a desert island, i still can't decide would it be Microwave XT or a Korg Wavestation A/D (aka the ultimate model). I would say 51:49 in favour of A/D.

    Korg's range of synths from that era are mind blowing - some of these sounds don't sound out of place at all today. I have a Korg 01/wfd from the same era which I still use as my master keyboard, and I love it - I call it my "power ballad synth" based on the quality of the pad and string sounds. The only disappointment is that Korg decided not to include *that* piano sound from the earlier M1 - shame!

      @WoodyPianoShack  7 років тому

      hearing a lot of love for the 01 in the comments, need to try it out one day! agree that they still sound great, still get the job done, and m1s are sought after in latin music genres.

    here's a question Woody the kurzweil k2000 came out the same year and that is a workstation too. so which came really first or are they just doing apple and oranges. arguably both are at the top of their game at that time give that both have pluses and minuses in specs. i had the good luck of picking up a kurzweil k2500 for 100 dollars US when i went to my piano teachers office and saw it lying against the wall and just asked what was up with it.
    long story short i thought he knew what it was at the time so when he quoted me 100 dollars. i thought he was giving a student deal since i liked it. only to find out later when he came over my house to take a look at it when i had it setup in my living room that he had just got it and had only plugged it in to test if it worked so he could sell it. all in all we both made out on the deal. he made some money maybe not all the money he could have got for it and i now have my first real professional syth for my collection for which i have a Yamaha U1 upright piano, the kurzweil k2500, and a CME Xkey 37. all 3 are great and i love what they can do.

    • @WoodyPianoShack
      @WoodyPianoShack  7 років тому +1

      it's not just about the sound, i find softwqre to be much more convenient for recording tracks. if it sounds the same/close then I prefer software, especially for these digital synths with restricted user interfaces.

      hi chris, cool! bestseller at the time? what was the main competition to this board?

    • @chrisstrobel3439
      @chrisstrobel3439 7 років тому

      Woody Piano Shack Hi Woody, well when I started working at Jim's Music Center in So.Cal. it was around 1991ish. I wouldn't say there was any real competition to the Wavestation at that point .. it was still its own unique thing, and I sold them mostly to accomplished and gifted keyboard players. The Korg O1/W series by far out sold the Wavestation (and Rolands at the time). On Rolands end the JV stuff came along, and I sold a lot of JV-80's, and also JD-800's. On Yamaha's end it was the SY77, and I still have the module version of it the TG77 (but mostly use Dexed out of convienance these days lol) We were not a Kurzweil dealer at that time so I can't comment on that (though I sold K250's and Kawai K's at my previous dealership) Cheers 🎹

    they must have used these on a million movie soundtracks back in the day. the sounds to me aren't that interesting - just typical Japanese new age/spacey samples. I remember when the 01/W came out. the band director brought one to school to test drive. and a friend of mine had one. a few years later, I bought a Korg X5D as my first synth. I traded it a year or 2 later on a new Trinity Plus (a huge purchase for me at that time.) I sold it 2 years later and have only (briefly) had 2 other Korgs - two Z1s. I don't think I've had a Korg product in over 15 years. they just lost their way some where and Yamaha got back in the lead, at least with their workstations. of course now I'm into Nord products. they just have the best sounds.
