- Korg Wavestation A/D, a beautiful and complex synth.
Intro and history of the Wavestation: 00:00
Demo song: 02:05
Vocoding: 4:23
Vector Synthesis: 06:02
How it's build up: 06:41
15 favorite sounds: 12:15
End: 23:16
The motion pads are why I have 2 of these for stacking. An incredible synth.
Got my Wavestation A/D with updated blue LCD a few years ago when nobody was interested or cared about Vector Synthesis, so got it very cheap. For vintage digital fans it's a must have, next to Yamaha TG77.
I know things were different when you made this comment, but I'm going to pass on the TG77. The last one I saw was £1000 on Reverb. On the other hand, the SY99 is like £400-800 soooooo
Your demo tracks are just AWESOME! You are really the 80's man :) Great sound production, as always.
Many thanks man, I appreciate it! :)
@@EspenKraft Yes, genuinely loving this track. And all the funky graphics/post production! ❤️
Technically the 90's in this instance, but the eighties never died for me :)
Great stuff! There is something special with the sound from an early 90S KORG. Just loving it! Glad to see the display turned out good. Was worried about all the soldering that had to be done. 😎🤩
Thanks man! You'll definitely love this one later. Great to have a new bright and BLUE display! ;-)
@@EspenKraft I didnt think that was the factory screen! It looks absolutely perfect! :D
@@EspenKraft So you replaced the display with a brighter, non-factory type? My A/D (bought used when about 2yrs old)) still has the original display. Sometime ago I bought a new backlight for it, but have yet to install it.
@@Johnnyk999 Yes, it's a custom made display. Anders Jensen bought it and he put it in there, but I removed some components like the inverter (for the old one) so it will be quiet in the future. The original one was dimmed out so something else had to replace it. ;-)
Are these synths easy to repair. I have a broken on in UK
This machine was and still is amazing !!! All the Pads are marvellous !!! It was far away the others when released !!!
Espen, I LOVE your videos!! I have always believed that people discard synths WAY too soon! The lack of creativity and musical ability tempt musicians to buy new gear thinking that it will make them sound better and we all know that it does not! Watching your videos confirm my suspicions that gear that was made 30 years ago is still relevant today, sound-wise!
Many thanks! I appreciate your comments. :)
Just the fact that there's an actual vector joystick mounted on a synth module makes my day :D
Haha, when he started playing the demo I actually started picturing 80's girls with big hair dancing in some strange neon night club scene, very evocative (or I'm sleep deprived, lol)
I had a Wavestation SR for years, which I actually programmed. I now have a Korg Kronos, which has the WS waveforms and wave sequencing as well as vector synthsis. The limitation is the 2-osc Program structure so you need two of them in a Combi to re-create WS patches. On the WSSR, I remember creating lush pads using wave sequences consisting of the same waveform at varying volumes crossfading into one another. Great synth.
That demo is insane! Especially the Vocoder part sent shivers. You should definitely feel proud of yourself, damn talented! Stay safe!
Many thanks for saying! )
I like how you make some of us feel justified in our ancient purchases, with misty-eyed nostalgia. Confirmation bias in bucketloads. :)
I have no shame when it comes to nostalgia... ;-)
Have you seen/heard the new Korg Wavestate?
@@gjc82071 Not played it myself so I can only judge it from pics and audio demos. Not impressed, to groove oriented and not the same presence in the sound as the original. No import of own samples/waves.
I can understand why they've made it like that in 2020, but it's not for me. I might feel differently if I get my hands on one myself, but not something I'd buy to test that out. ;-)
@sbmphr Pretty much all the features you say you love about it is features that really put me off. I'm not the slightest interested in that. I want my sequences to be much simpler, played by hand, mostly and those new "groove" oriented machines are simply not my cup of tea. ;-)
The world's most Atmospheric Stand-alone Vocoder to date.
This is geat! Somehow I'm just seeing and hearing this now. Love the demo tune. Man, that WS A/D sounds like a million bucks!
Use it so much back when it was new. ;-)
Awesome stuff as usual Espen. I have the original wavestation keyboard. Love it. Love the blue screen on yours. You have such vast knowledge of these beautiful synths.
The keyboard "monolith" design is classic and no matter version the Wavestation sounds great. Thanks Man! :)
The pads on the WS have always been a strong point very lush, ethereal and even rival some of the gear today. Ozric Tentacles a UK space rock band used the synth for over a decade as well as....Steve Roach. Nice demo always tops Espen!
Thanks man! :)
Ozric kicks ass! So much cool synth work going on in their albums
It always surprised me that Brian Eno didn’t gravitate to one or more of these. I would have thought the Wavestation would have been right up his street.
The wavestation still rocks! A very deep and versatile synth. I wouldn't mind the AD model.
Nice to see my old patches getting a workout! ;)
The WS is a great synth, and despite the common misconception that it's hard to program (it's not, the interface is great, and the actual synthesis features are fairly simple), can still sound surprising, particularly if you avoid the cliches.
The Waverex is really cool - back in the day there was the Frontal Lobe/PCM Channel and the Zadok SAM-1 that did this, but they were quite obscure and pricey boxes. Also - if you don't have it, the best PCM card set for the WS by far is the Synth/Timeslice set, which has some great patches and waveforms on it. It was more or less in permanent residence in my WS since I got it...
Looking forward to see some more on how the Waverex works and what it sounds like running your own samples through the WS! Great stuff!
Awesome Ben, I find many of your patches demonstrate the WS perfectly!
I never found the WS very hard to program either, everything is quite logical.
I'll finish up my video about the WaveRex soon! :-) Cheers
Back in the mid-1990s I ran the Wavestation mailing list for a few years. We had an amazing community back in those days. If you are the Ben I think you are, you did the patch compilations. Those were great days, and I’m glad to see you still talking about the WS.
@@infindebula Yep, it was a fun community, for sure! When I first got on the Internet in '93, there was precisely *one* bank of Wavestation patches online, and there was a culture of keeping your own patches private.
By sharing my own patches, and encouraging others to share theirs, and the whole Patch Archive thing, we built up a nice little library for WS owners, that's still useful today.
I know that model was taken up by other synth communities as well. Fun times, those early days!
I had a Wavestation A/D but sold it some years ago. Beautiful Vocoder sound and great instrument. I regret that i sold it :(
Great video with even greater editing, loved every minute of it!
Sweet! Thanks :)
Hey Espen, I love your studio setup and your music. The korg wavestation reminds me of the music you find in the Donkey Kong Country series of video games, I grew up with that game among many others and it sounds just as beautiful today :)
I have the Wavestation vst for a long time and I use it a lot. I love it's sound. Never touched a hardware Wavestation. It's funny because I instantly recognized what you did with editing.
My favorite sounds (later in the video) are: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 12... those pads are SO GOOD! :D And you always play so well!
Another epic video brother! Your knowledge and skill is truly impressive!
Thanks! :)
Thank you so much for sharing. Fascinating history - I did not know that Yamaha owned Korg once! Loved all the menu diving and your favourite sounds - Well Done! 😀
Many thanks! :)
That Rack synth is a POWERHOUSE!!!
Man I could totally go for more Wavestation video tutorials. This was great, Espen; thank you!
Thanks! No more Wavestation videos from me though. ;-)
Very nice job on this video. You seem to have a good understanding of the instrument's architecture. Appreciate the straight-forward explanation.
Thanks for saying! :)
Hi, Espen! I 'm not a musician and I don 't really know how to play music. I play rarely and only for my own pleasure when I 'm alone at home. But almost every time after your video, I run to my keys, full of ideas and inspiration, and play.. also I play. also I play! I like what you re doing. Thanks to you! 👍😊
(Sorry for my English. it is Google translator)
I love the first demo song! I hope you're releasing an album!
I might release all the demo songs from my videos, as an album. Maybe. Cheers
The Wavestation remains THE Ambient machine....the clarity and beauty of wave sequencing with moving pads and drones....love it. I have to say...even the Vst synth version sounds incredible...and the comfort of editing on a bigger screen. I bought the Wavestation EX in Germany cheap as can be in the 90ies... because I heard it was used in the production of Goldie's Timeless LP.... don't remember if it's true or not.
AAAAH GAAAWD those gated drums are so amazing.
Great valuable content!
You have talent, experience and passion !
In the YT ''synth community'' you are one of the few guys that has interesting things to tell .
Thanks! It's fun for me as well to takes these trips back in time and relive my former life with you. ;-)
Wow! This Synth still sounds amazing!
Thanks Espen, it was a great presentation!
Many thanks! :)
I always loved the korg sound. I had lots of korg keyboards in my time including the wavestation ex keyboard, and then sold it and got a wavestation SR
I owned a Korg Wavestation ... The vector synthesis was brilliant 👍
great video again! this was a nice watch and.. a pleasant sound for my ears 🎉🔊🎵😜👍
Thanks! :)
Thank you for this video and I totally agree. I owned the Korg Wavestation in 1993 and this synth was a awesome fun machine 😊
Cheers! :D
That demo song is so good! If only patches like this were on the new Wavestate.
Thanks! :D
Wavestation, so many people used them as pad factories, and in that respect, it worked extremely well...
love the second sound example with those big fat chords and the harmonies at the end
I Love your channel and all of the videos that you do! Keep it up!
Many thanks! :)
Beautiful crystalline pads!
Fascinating... push a couple buttons, spin a knob, do it a few more times and this is an exciting thing!
Jokes aside I love these old synths and operating one is black magic. Roland more my cup of tea but always nice to see some of the competition.
Nice channel, Espen! Please keep up the great work. I really like your videos and music performance.
Thanks man, I appreciate it! :-)
Clicked like just for the terminator rendition.
All I can hear when Listening to the wave station.
Every single 90's Genesis album and lot of parts form mike & the mechanics, begger on a beach of gold.
It was featured extensively in that album, and was also Phill Collin favourite synth.
"Fading Lights" is indeed a standalone demo for this synth...
And yes, many tracks from "Beggar on a Beach of Gold" are totally awesome. "Someone Always Hates Someone" comes into mind first...
Great demo as always. I remember playing a DX7S in a store in 1988 and it had the most playable nylon string guitar sound that I've ever heard from an instrument that doesn't rely on samples. None of the other DX instruments had that guitar program in memory. Keep up the great work.
Cheers!
always look forward to your videos.
Thanks man! :)
Fantastic sound from 80x, super synthwave sounds!!!!
Excellent overview of how sounds are created!
Thanks!
Great channel!!!! I had a wave station. Jd-880, ESQ-1, ASR 10, EMU E 4000, SUOERNOVA Pro sx, Kawai XD5, Alesis D4 and a few others.... im so happy to see yours in such great conditions! I dont subscribe to many things but I've certainly added you! Keep it up!
Many thanks! Appreciated :D
Brilliant piece of kit
Wow that track u composed was just great... love all the sounds. Cooooool
Many thanks! :)
The Wavestation A/D is a great synth. I bought mine a few years back and I love it.
The best thing is that replacing the lithium battery is easy, no soldering is required.
Now replacing the LCD screen is a different story.
It is some work yes.
Except you have to desolder the high voltage components, that can be tricky if you're not used to soldering smaller componentes.
These riffs you came up with for this demo are better than a lot of hits back when this came out.
Awesome! :)
Oh I've never heard of the WaveRex card for importing samples into the WS. Thanks for including this important upgrade. Looking forward to its own video.
Had a wavestation EX for 15 years.Nothing better.
Just got a Wavestate here - really nice to see how this predecessor works, did not know that it had a vocoder!
Amazing, as always... I have the iPad Wavestation, and used to have an SR in 1996... then another one in late 2000, but sold them... probably get the AD soon...
That ''Mini Lead' and DX Bassline reminds me of 'Fletch'.. Awesome work KRafT-Verk!
Thanks man! :)
Great video, Espen!
Thanks! :)
What David Wise was inspired by when making the DKC soundtracks. That vocoder is amazing too
I didn't know that, but it makes a lot of sense, especially considering Aquatic Ambience and such.
I downloaded the Aquila Rift patchbank and and I was blown away. 👍
SUPER video!!!Great sound!!!Thanks!!!!
My pleasure, thanks! :)
Love that Minilead. Tony Banks used it extensively in Fading Lights, though I think he edited the patch to be polyphonic.
Great sounds and progressions.
Cheers! :D
Unbelieveble Cool sound! like the compo +++++
Thanks! :)
Sequential's "vector" technology had an interesting history. As well as Korg's wonderful Wavestation series, it was used in several of Yamaha's synths, notably the SY22 and SY35. I own an SY22, and it's a curious beast - great features based on the vector synthesis idea, but quite limited in the way the individual sounds are created.
It was all about copyright infringment , yamaha licensed fm and then casio cosmo made fm tone with phasedistortion because they didnt want to get sued, same with sequential vs ripping of ppg wavetables
One of my favorite synths of all time ! An apt evolution of the M1
Wonderful demo!
Sweet! :)
Very good production, congrats.
Thanks!
Great video! I‘m a WS SR owner of the first hour, learned now that I missed something really special with the inputs of the AD.
Just ordered one for 340,- EUR. :-)
Best wishes from Munich to Norway
Great to hear man! Cheers back to Munich from Norway! :)
Great video, thanks for sharing!!!! I've had the iPad app for some time and rarely used it. There's a lot going on with the interface, maybe that's why. It's a really interesting, deep and fun instrument...and the sound quality is really excellent!
Cheers! :D
You are so funny. And I mean that in a good way. I could watch your videos forever.
Aim to please... thanks! ;-)
Thass wild! Please write a well-illustrated book on this important era of prosumer synthesizers.
Writing books is not worth the time doing it. ;-)
I wish Korg would make a rackable version of the new Wavestate. Until then i'll keep my trusted Wavestation A/D. Great synth!
Don't ever get rid of the Wavestation AD and make the same mistake I did 22 years ago when I stupidly sold mine!
Love that you're wearing a donkey kong shirt in this one seeing as the composer for the donkey kong country games utilized the wavestaion quite heavily in the music.
The Yamaha influence is evident in the vocabulary used to describe the wavestation A/D architecture (Performance/Parts/Voices), though the sounds are very Korg. I recognize many of these sounds carried forward to Triton and beyond.
You’ve breathed new life into my Wavestation SR
Excellent! :)
Espen ! I don't normally comment on videos! Only if I feel it sparks my interests! I've been a fan of yours since 1980, my mum listened to Jean Michel jarre OXYGEN. That's how I started looking for records at my back door records and found one of your albums in the electronic section! Still play it on my Turntable. Anyways you inspired me to buy the korg workstation yesterday it's in the post. I know have a Yamaha TX81Z, Esonique DP4, Korg triton rack. And now the korg workstation A/D. I also have a D-4E and D-4 Electronic Music Mixer. I very much enjoy your content. Thank-you for taking lots of your time sharing your awesome content and the great sounds you produce. Your a diamond Espen...
Cheers mate.
I was 11 in 1980 and had no music released at that time. So I have no idea who you have mixed up with me, but I appreciate the support of my channel and content here though. :P
Espen, I do apologize! Somehow I associated you with Kraftwork music!!! Lol...Anyways still a fan of yours! Thanks for letting me know...
Thanks again, Espen, for this vid✌🏽
Pulled the trigger today and this week an A/D will arrive and also the WaveReX- card.
Sold some small pieces of gear to get this beauty which will shine next to my JD (also promoted by you)
Congrats! Great setup! :)
What is the WaveRex card?
I loved my Korg tape echo unit and then my Kord SDD 3000 first digital delay it was unbelievable what I could do with it on the guitar. The SDD 3000 is still a good unit if you can find one in good shape there's a couple fantastic factory presets in the unit
It’s so good because the envelopes are unassuming
You know what Mr. Espen Kraft , I should isolate myself with your musical workshop there in these days of COVID-19....
Those pads are awesome
Such a fantastic instrument. Korg really did something special with the Wavestation.
If I'm honest, I'd say that maybe the Wavestation is in my top 5 favorite synths ever. But I've never played one, neither do I have the plugin. I've always LOVED the sound of it though :).
And of course, not to forget the awesome demo song you made for this one! Really did a great job on that! And a great video as always.
Thanks Xavier, it holds a special place in my heart for many reasons and it's fun to finally present it properly! :)
@@EspenKraft Because of this video, I had to get the Wavestation VST (which is in on sale for 25$)...
After hours of playing with it, I absolutely love it. Such inspiring tones you just don't get with other synths. :)
Ah, sweet man!
elaborate explanation of how to operate this device :-) nice
OOOOOOOOh I see all rackmount synthesizers that I loved that time. Had no money for it, but mostly kicked out of a music store because I was hanging there all-day trying and playing that gear.
The new ones even better!
Lovely strings from 15.26 to 16.38!!!!!
Your demo at 02:05 is my favourite (of all the ones you've made) - I listen to it too often lol
Cheers!
I've got one of these in my loft boxed & almost forgotten 🐖💨
I just bought Collection 3 soft synths from KORG for an incredible price and the Wavestation is part of it! Great! :D
Front 242 - 1993 (06:21:03:11 Up Evil) and (05:22:09:12 Off) 2 epic CDs!! Weapon of choice to use....WAVESTATION A/D ...nuff said
I had no idea. Love both albums and I have an A/D, so there you go... Thanks!
They used a Wavetstation SR for the albums, but same thing in most respects.
Phil Western from "download/platEAU/off and gone" was the master of the wavestation!🎹🎧💫😵👌😎👍 rest in peace😔🙏✋✌
OMG great sound
Wow - I guess wavestations were sampled in the 90s for mod/s3m tracker music too - recognized quite a few sounds especially with that first tune!
Like every single KORG-product has 'life' in it, created by real sound-lovers, this machine sounds warm and beautiful and the warm pad sounds give me shivers. The Wavestate is a beautiful piece of modern technique, that grabs my heart also, Sir! ;-}
I sold my wavestation years ago it was a icecold sounding thing .
@P scope Well, I wasn't communicating to you, than??? ;-} My experience is a 100% other one!
@@uvoikimovundutrauerblume3302 I always use 1 of my older Korg synths for adding warmth to my recordings :-))
@Rik Vanhoenacker Zie je, ik wist wel dat ik niet de enige was, haha!
Superb
