that’s not the definition of the olympics. that’s what world championships are for. the olympics is a practice in peace. it’s basically a giant and more serious friendly.
Well said Frank! As an example the Irish female boxer who won back to back golds Kellie Harrington; works part time at the hospital and she was asked if she was going to go Pro after the Olympics and she said no, that she was going back to her life, working at the hospital, living her regular life. This is a great story one that is repeated with many athletes acriss the globe. What Kellie didn't speak of were the sacrifices, the long winter cold nights of training etc. Pro athletes should NOT be allowed to compete end of!
Frank according to Coco Gauff its not only NBA players who are staying in 5 star hotels during the Olympics. She did say that all of her tennis teammates except herself relocated to 5 star hotels. For what its worth she said she decided to stay in the Olympics Village after she discovered that Labron had decided to remain in the Olympics Village.
Would Gareth Southgate be the PERFECT MAN to coach the USMNT? No. Southgate's strengths included 1. uniting the dressing room 2. bringing through many young players 3. making the England more likeable before the media and public --------------------------------------------------------- The US need a tactician, not a better version of Gregg.
@@calc1657 You serious? Multiple finalist of a national side? Who else could US realistically get? The pool/ quality of national managers is much lower than club football. He's easily best of those available.
Frank made some very good points 👍 I don't think the FANS at large think about those issues, all they know is their National Team in any Sport is competing... but if they think about the Olympics like Frank does, many will think like him.
Disagree with the pundits. The US job seems like it is a 'nation-building' job. Huge coverage of the game, potential to build the game. Southgate would be a great ambassador and is a good tactician for defensive sides (see early tournaments for England). He struggled when England were favourites, but not an issue for US.
Hayes and Southgate in as Coaches for the USSF, is not weird at all. We have Foreign Coaches in MLS, it all depends on the record. If they're winners they will be liked and even adored. Bring Southgate to the USMNT Pronto
English people are notoriously insular, which is why they have so little collective success abroad. Emma Hayes was given a Cadillac, and trying not to wreck it. American soccer has to stop looking to them to address its issues, because they have such a problem looking at what is as opposed to what they are used to seeing. You don't fix things that way. The world isn't lacking for options, and a good number of them have done well in different spots with varying strengths and weaknesses.
The 1994 USMNT was somewhat a Club Team, and the 2002 as well. They were and are the National Team of the US, but the training Programs was a lot closer to the definition of a Club Team as Frank explained. A National Team Definition is when the Coach call on players from their Clubs and does the get together and training when possible, it works when you have enough Technical Players that just need a National Coach to mold them together and get the best out of them at the international Tournament. Something like that. The USSF can chose to do a Club Team Program with a US Coach, this means the USMNT Players will have to attend many Training sessions together, and play 10 or more international friendlies as if they're a Club that plays soccer all year round. Do you have enough players in the MLS or.. who can form a Club Team/National Team? This means that these players will be working for the USSF as if the USSF is a Club, and answer to the US National Coach all year round until after the World Cup. There is enough time, but is there a qualified US coach for such program and are there enough qualify athlete players now? Everything must be ready now to do that. The other definition in my opinion is better for the US, as we have enough quality players playing in quality clubs in Europe. By bringing a coach such as Southgate you can move the USMNT forward fast and reach a much higher Team level for the World Cup.
Knowing the culture and the players is very important, so if the USA decide to go for Southgate, a man who doesn't know that culture, then the staff around him would be all important, those staff should be American to bridge the gap in the coaches lack of knowledge of that culture.
@@babyting395 The players culture, knowing them, how they think and feel, which would most likely be alien to a foreign manager, not everything had to be taken negatively.
@@chrishughes4521 I’m just interested which part of the culture you think Southgate would struggle with. What is the difference between American and English culture?
Absolutely not!! Guy couldn't even get the best out of or win anything with the most ridiculously good and deepest player pools available. What could he possibly do with with the USMNT players? Would be a step backwards from Berhalter.

Hiring Southgate to coach the USMNT will be a good decision, as was the hiring of Hayes for the USWNT. There is something about the fundamentals of Soccer for the US, when gotten from the English School of Football. It's that simple, but plus you have to be a proven good coach. We know now that Emma Hayes is a proven good coach, we're playing the Olympics Final. We also know that Southgate is the Coach that got England to the Euro Final, and you can't argue with that success either. The USSF should pull the trigger on hiring Southgate, it's a decision that can be defended easily today, tomorrow, next year, in 2026 and after the World Cup. You will make progress in the National Team and you will learn a lot from that coach and from yourself. You will also establish the line for US Coaches as they will see where things need to be, based on where they can be.
The United States has been learning this game from England for forever. As a result we've got a bunch of worker bees who know their roles and execute them to the pinnacle of mediocrity. At some point the United States and England need to eat some humble pie and start listening to somebody else for a change.
I am getting tired of the USMNT. I love our players and follow them in club but the national team is a mess and I am ready to sleep on them until they get their sh*t together.
Other than being handed the England job, his only other managerial experience was getting Middlesbrough relegated. Explain to me how that's elite in any way? That said, that's what makes him the optimal USSF hire: this is an organization that idealizes the process of failing upward.
Frank and Don are right, established national teams should be looking to hire coaches from their own country. Jurgen Klinsmann made sence in 2011 he lived in the US for long and has american children. At the minimum the manager needs to have a connection, not just "lets see if we can pay Pep or Klopp to win us a world cup"

The only problem with Southgate coaching the USMNT is he speaks English. We need a coach that speaks American.

The only problem with Southgate is that he's a bad manager. Needed consistently easy draws to get anywhere with talented teams every tournament
That’s not the issue with him
yeah because thats the ONLY problem that it would have
You think thats the problem? If he couldnt win with talent in England...lol
100% agree with frank about the sports being played in the olympics. if the olympics isn't the pinnacle of your sport, it doesn't belong.
Unfortunately FIFA has more money AND power. They don’t want the Olympics to upstage the World cup…
