    For all of those who wanted to see tiny lemons, bonsai are not tiny species of tree. They are no different than the large versions, they are just frequently pruned like this to be kept small. If it did have fruit, it would be a tiny tree with big lemons. I wish truly tiny lemons existed, that would be a adorable!!

    Nigel, thank you so much! I planted some lemon seeds after watching this inspiring video in 2018. A little over 2 years later, my 11 small but healthy lemon saplings are doing well! They're finally big enough to start training towards bonsai. Growing trees is my favourite hobby! Maybe one day, once they're impressive enough, I'll be able to send you one of the 11 lemon saplings which was created because of this video! I love your lemon tree. Easy to grow your own from most lemon seeds you would get with water water and lemon at a restaurant. I have several. They stay indoors in a badly-lit area. I've had some for ten years. (No flowers, no fruit, of course). As they have been kept in very small pots, I have not had to snip them. Pruned one, one time because of the badly-lit area where it sits - top-pruned even, which is a terrible thing to do.

      If tou dont cut the big roots, they will dominate and you will be left with just one or two roots. If you cut the big ones of you give space for all the smaller and weaker roots. Rather, it pertains to the experience of a bonsai video of this high quality... namely, Patricia and I are seniors, and thankfully escaped the era when everyone was programmed to require loud, fast-beat music ( a.k.a. noise ) in order to sit quietly long enough to learn something without falling asleep. • @DavidMFChapman

    Nigel, I'm too scared to completely defoliate a tree. What is the principle of defoliation? Can I not just remove a larger leaf from time to time?

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  7 років тому +35

      Total defoliation can knock back the vigor of a tree so it produces a new set of branches with leaves that are smaller than the ones that were pruned off. It can only be done with a tree that has a lot of vigor and it can be a risky operation. It is a useful technique because you can study the bare branch structure on trees that don't normally lose their leaves. It is also used to prepare a tree for a show, it gets a uniform colour and size to the leaves and the leaves don't have any long term insect damage. Partial defoliation is a preferred technique and is used to thin out the vigorous zones on a tree, so light can reach the inner branches for back budding. If the lemon tree was weak and the weather bad, I wouldn't defoliate it.

    Few months ago I saw this video and at the same time I had a lemon plant growing from a seed which I spat out while having a lemonade long before.
    Obviously I tried making a bonsai out of it and it is quiet well except for some white spots in the leaves (probably due to nutrition deficiency)

    I loved plants as a kid, and also loved eating lemons, so my mom bought me a Meyer lemon tree when I was about 9 or 10. I am now 29 years old and my tree is still alive and kicking. I put it into a big half barrel container before I moved out a few years ago. in 2018 I came home to PA for thanksgiving, ate a lemon off the tree and brought the seeds with me back to Miami Beach where I live now. I now have 2 three-year-old lemon trees from my original tree thriving, and they make me smile when ever I take care of them. citrus trees are so hardy. you can cut them back to the stump, not water them for weeks, over water to high heaven and they will still thrive! in my 20 years of citrus growing, the only thing that scares me are those scale bugs. bugs are the killers in my experience and I have had a few close calls over the years! anyway, nice vid, I watched all the way through and was shocked to realize it was an 189 min vid! haha

      I would need to let the tree grow freely to get flowers and then fruit. Some day I intend to do this! I have never used epsom salts on my Lemon tree, but I read it is good for them if they have a magnesium deficiency.

    I must admit, as a newcomer to this art (or gardening in general, to be honest), such severe trimming of both trunk and roots seems like a very harsh treatment. I'm growing a few seedlings, one year old at the moment, and I can't even make myself cut them down, not to mention this much pruning. However, given the fact that this lemon tree is 2/3 my age, I have no doubt that the next update will be just as amazing as this one and maybe I will gather the courage to adopt the clip and grow method. Thank you for the time and effort that you put in the videos and bonsai, of course!

Scientists conducted a study using wild tobacco if I remember, and damaged one plant to simulate caterpillars, and measured the biological activity in the other plants. There was a spike of activity in the other plants, and an increase in production of a sticky sap on the stems that tastes good to caterpillars, but kills them.

    • @ashleyfalcon125
      @ashleyfalcon125 4 роки тому +1

      Jenna Lee Prado they may actually care a lot, but they know they can’t make someone else’s choices for them, for they do not know the circumstances surrounding each situation. It’s nobody else’s business what people do with their bodies before a certain point. After that certain point all bets are off tho. So, that being said, they probably care, and wouldn’t choose it for themselves under any circumstance, but they also aren’t judge & jury over someone else’s life. We all have choices to make in life. Do you (or have you) ever text & drive? That literally kills thousands upon thousands of completely innocent people every year. So does speeding. Driving in the rain or snow. Driving while tired. Intoxicated. Etc. yet the same person who complains about someone else’s personal choices will then text & drive. Yea, the world is made up of nothing but a bunch of damn hypocrites. Smh.

    • @TallowQueen
      @TallowQueen 4 роки тому

      @@ashleyfalcon125 I extremely dislike intoxicated drivers but they haven't murdered anyone. It is an idiotic choice but they are not the same as someone that murders. And they are punished if they are caught, if you weren't aware. If you get caught drunk driving it cost around 20k. More if you are caught in the military. That said, even driving in the first place with no distractions can kill someone. Some people just aren't good drivers. That doesn't mean that they should be treated the same as a murderer because they get in their car to go to work. Have you driven a car? Yes we all have problems and we are bad people. No joke. But just like a murderer, ACTUALLY planning and killing another human life, abortion should not be allowed. No one is telling you what to do with your life, they are telling you not to kill an innocent baby. It's a separate life with a separate heart and brain and body. And without their own mothers deciding to kill them, they would grow up into someone's wife, husband, mother, brother, coworker etc... Just because it is at the beginning stages of its life doesn't mean it's not human. Some are born premature. And a two year old is still in development. This is common sense. Evil has to make up a lie by saying it is the same life of the mother so she can kill they part of herself if she chooses. There are people that physically disable themselves by choice. I think that's unbelievably stupid but I'm not going to say they should do it by law. That is their body their leg they are cutting off. Have at it. The lefts arguments change over time to please new generations. Before they argue abortion is okay because it was just a clump of cells, not a baby. Now no one says that because it was too easily disproved by science. Now they use the "same life" because it can be used in a philosophical way. Because obviously science still disproves this argument as well. They have to change everything on the left into feeling motives because they aren't backed by facts and statistics. Sugar coat your evil stance if you want...Hopefully you will wise up one day and feel miserable about your earlier decisions. Better to regret and admit than to live in a harmful lie forever. The left is good at fooling people so I understand. They have fooled me in the past. I listened to common sense an did research and changed my argument once I fount the truth.

    Is there anything special you do with your citrus trees or is it just the same care as any other tree? My kumquat tree has been really unhappy recently no matter what I do, less water more water, more fertilizer less fertilizer, epsom salt I even tried iron supplements, still the leaves are slowly yellowing and dropping :( any tips? Thanks

      The trees really like to spend the summer outdoors in the sun. Most trees will get weak if kept indoors all the time, the light levels are lower than outside and the trees like the fresh air.
      I would carefully check your tree for insects and also inspect the roots for problems. You may have to re pot into fresh bonsai soil if you notice any drainage issues.

      You should trim the roots and re pot, should be done every few years or they get root bound.

      Andrew Reynolds I’ve done this with my ficus Bonsai many times & they have came back every time stronger & more beautiful every time. One of my trees lost every one of its leaves one winter it’s absolutely awesome to look at now. I’m no expert but Nigel’s 💯 right & he knows what he’s doing!😎

      Thanks Amol, this tree is still growing well. The soil I use is called bonsai soil, it is an in organic mix that requires you to fertilize the trees.

      This bonsai is not being tortured, it is actually receiving better care than most trees
