Only a rower understands the dread you feel waking up on 2k day. I can feel the fear in their faces when they set the monitor for 2k
It definitely gets the heart going every time!
So true 😅
To anyone who doesn't row, don't be fooled by lean looking appearances, these guys are crazy strong and crazy fit, to a level you only find out once you try rowing yourself....
Couldn't agree more!
And mentally very very strong.
and then when you see them in person they're all like 200 cm tall and you realize the camera can be deceiving, they're just big lads the lot of em
I would disagree. They are not crazy strong when measured objectively against other specimens their height and weight. Rowers generally have very poor strength in the bench, squat and deadlift as well as the Olympic lifts compared to other tall sportsmen with similar body types. 17 stone rowers could barely bench 100kg for reps.
G D actually I think you’ll find that they could beat a hell of a lot of people in the squats and deadlifts. Rowers do them like mad and with the sessions they do they build up so much leg and back power that they can explode with tremendous strength when needed. And I bet you if you take a reasonable weight that they could do a hell of a lot more reps than any other weightlifter
2k erg test is the most acutely painful thing you can possibly do in fitness.
Definitely!
Jordan McGinnis I agree!! We row 2k for our police fit test. Hurts so bad I can’t move, breath or cry!,
30mins are worse
you've clearly never ran a flat-out quarter mile in track. the 2k is up there for sure, probably about the same as a 800m race on the track, but the home stretch of the 400m IS the fucking hurt locker.
Karl-Erik Paulsson but you don’t strain your arms or back as much as rowing
I have my first 2k test in the club today. It's in 7 hours and I'm sitting here sweating with a pulse of 180, not getting any work done on my thesis. This is fun.
How did it go!?
@@CameronBuchan Well, I landed on 7.11, which is a pr of 11 seconds (I did one 3 weeks ago on my own). My sprint was not too good. I'll hit sub 7 within November/December 👍! YAMMIN' ON IT!
Nice work!! Huge PB!! Keep on yammin' on it!
@@CameronBuchan Thanks! Your videos definitely helped💪
This. is. why. I. cox. All I need to do is step on a scale
I come from a team where coxswains do all of the land workouts...is this not the norm?
Hahahah
ctaylorgh91 Yep im a cox and in my team the coxes do all the land training and the ergos
It's a shame they don't hook those things up to the electrics, power it for decades
Perhaps one day!
@@CameronBuchan people powered gym :) electricity pennies saved going back into GB rowing and supporting up and coming rowers. Great video- I have cerebral palsy and have just ordered my first rower....thanks for the inspo bro the Women were also epic in their 2k.
@@dreamcatcher7595 you would actually be suuuuper surprised by the amount of energy needed to even toast bread. an olympic cyclist in a race could probably barely power 2 lamps that you normally use in your own home
This brings back so many bad memories. Had butterflies and felt sick just watching their build ups!
Bad/good memories! 😂
How to tell the big boys from afar: the ones with stacks of weight in front of and behind their ergs
Big stack of weights = poor technique and timing, kicking the ergo all over the place. How would weights work with sliders or dynamic erg/row perfect.
Emily Likes Horses yeah I can almost guarantee GB towers have poor technique lol
David Allen Showing your ignorance there I’m afraid. They absolutely do. No need for weights. The machine won’t move if the timing is correct. Can you use weights to stop the boat being kicked in the wrong direction.?
Emily Likes Horses you’re a massive bore
Freakin epic video. Great to see inside the team on a big day like that. Makes me almost want to do a 2k, almost, not quite.
Haha me too man. Me too
Do it my man
my heart is fucking racing just from watching the video and when the test hits its like 2 times as fast as now every time no matter how confident i am it its just like im facing the devil himself
When I was editing it I was getting so excited!
I done 2k in the gym a few days ago. 10 mins 16secs. These guys are doing it in half the time! I'm 5ft 6, 38 and a recovering heroin addict. Started going back to the gym 2 weeks ago after 18 years. Love getting on the rower and will get my time down. Great video.
Welcome to the community! Good luck with your rowing journey. Let know how you get on!
@@CameronBuchan thanks for the comment Cameron. I put the rower on level 9 on Thursday. Would I get more distance if the level is higher? I'm still trying to figure out what level would be best to cover more distance faster. Any tips?
@@jordansuter7119 no not really. Best to stick middle of the road. I've made a few videos talking about the resistance on the machines!
@@CameronBuchancheers for taking the time to reply and give advice. What number would you advise me to be on?
@@jordansuter7119 like i said middle of the scale is normally good. Not really as easy as that though. Go into detail whys that's the case in my other videos
Please keep these videos from the life of athletes coming! Keeps me, as a student rower, motivated :)
Awesome! Once I get recovered from the surgery I want to keep doing more!
I'm new to rowing from a long cycling background, rower in the gym lots before but now have a concept 2 at home, the pain!! Watched a lot of your technique vids and they've helped loads.. I'm 44 5'8 so not the best rower build but loving it.. getting my 500m down to 1.35 where I was at 1.47 when I started. Mixing sprint days with steady state days along with the winter wattbike training.. so good, nice to have a different type of cardio at home keeps in fresh, and the strength gains are real!! So in awe at your times/power very inspiring and funny vid, awesome stuff dude 👌🤙
This is definitely your best video so far! Good insight into GB Rowing HQ for lots of club rowers around the country this week also testing. Cheers!
Wow! Thanks. I just want to keep improving while I'm getting back to tainting.
My current 2K time is 7:34. I’m 5’6”, 174lbs, and 41 yrs old. I feel good about my time considering my height and age.
Great work! #yamsquad
Ohhhh boy that was stressful to watch but awesome to not have to just go off Al and Ollie’s accounts of how it went - “yeah all good” hahaha. Disappointed at the lack of milk purchasing this week but otherwise 10/10
I was hopping to build some suspense! Thanks Stefff milk purchasing continues today, don't worry about that!
Let’s be honest, if you don’t collapse on the floor after a 2k, you didn’t do it right
So right! #yamsquad
Cameron Buchan yooo thanks for replying. Love the rowing vids.
Ha.
When I rowed in university, on nice days we'd have the c2s near the docks. It made for a short aiming point to the Charles when you rode the vomit comet after a 2k test. 25 years later and it still makes me break into a cold sweat!!
Great channel - found it after i started rowing again.
Some of those guys are massive!!
10:08 I can relate, commitment and dedication to improvement
Oh, i love that GB suite.....
Watched a few vlogs now, so great to see little clips what goes on within gb rowing 😊
I appreciate the support!
Caversham Powerplant generating some watts
That's a lot of WATTS
Well done Genntlemen !!!
Watching this after I went 6:40.2 and then proceeded to throw up for the next 20 min a couple days ago.
Only a select few know that feeling. Good work! #yamsquad
Damn, i can feel this pain but also satisfaction. Even after 4 years when i have stopped with rowing at the club i can feel pain just by looking at their faces, to feel that burn in lungs and legs.. Damn thats a hell of a feeling! Good video!
Also, i already achieved my pb on 500m.. 1:25.5, now aiming 1k on below 1:30.
And in a month.. We will see about 2k hehe
Keep going!
Thanks Robert! I was really happy with how this one came out! Good job on the pb! Good luck with the 2k! #yamsquad
I would love to go back to rowing, I really loved it. Got my 2k time to 8:05.2 at the peak of back pain, at that point the adrenaline wore off, I had to completely rest for 10 weeks, walk with a crutch when I did walk, and retake my uni year. I’ve been living with acute lower back pain for the last four years now and I’ve been too scared to injure my back again.
Hopefully you can find a way to have no back pain once day! #yamsquad
Great vlog, Cameron! Interesting to see the different styles! 👌
That’s why I row long distance. Avoidance of the 2k pain cave. Terrifying
Love this video. Awesome to see behind the scenes testing!
Thanks for the support! Was great fun filming!
Amazing video cameron keep it up 🤙🏼🤙🏼
Thanks alot!! Appreciate the support
USA checking in. It's like Fran test day for the Crossfiter. Treacherous!! Good stuff.
That's exactly it! Always a workout to strike fear into our hearts!
watching this after doing 4k on the erg this morning!
Yeah Dave!! #yamsquad
Yeah Cam! Top job 👍
Thanks man!
Fantastic vid! Makes me want to hop on the nearest erg! Thanks!!
That's an awesome outcome! Thanks!
Wow, I loved the vid but found a new trigger for my epileptic migraines. In the past, certain speed flashing lights would do it, but the heartbeat sections of this video immediately caused it. Not complaining, you edit your videos any way you want, but it was fascinating to feel it triggered so quickly. I wonder if someone with more severe forms of epileptic seizures would be affected by it.
Oh well, it'll pass once I get to sleep. I love the 2k and 500m. They're very different obviously, but such intense tests of fitness. I'm definitely a sprinter, as my 500m pace is 1:23 and my 2k pace drops to about 1:45. I'd rather improve my 2k at this point, but its always easier to work on strengths rather than weaknesses.
I'm sorry to hear that! Hope you weren't effected too badly!
Sounds like you definitely are more of a sprinter!
Sweet vid. Inspirational.
Thanks! Appreciate it!
Great insight Cameron! Keep them coming
Thanks a lot! Hopefully be able to keep them going!
"Never again" LOL.
Training for a 6:30 2k rn, not fast compared to most people but I'm working everyday towards my goal
That's awesome good luck getting to 6:30! You got this! #yamsquad
Michael Soland 6:30 is actually pretty fast (depending on your category)
06:30 is my dream time haha I’m stuck on 06:51 😢
Done 7:29 at lunch. Probably went at 75-80%. Under 7min goal for summer. Fit blokes these. Pain is gain. 👍
Nice one Martin! I think you'll be able to go sub 7!! #yamsquad
Best video, good insight.
Great video, absolute beasts!
Tough environment - everyone putting in there best, on show to coaches and peers - that will get the best out of you but at a cost in terms of pain and effort! Love the parts where you see the guys looking over at the others after they've finished trying to work out if they are more tired, did anyone have anything else to give, could I have beaten them with a bit more effort, how hard was that guy working to get so close etc etc - all great psychology. Would be great to see the times but understand why we can't!
You see alot more than some! Awesome!
Hi from France !
Really great video here I'll send it to my rowing club for sure :)
That's awesome! Thanks a lot!
This video is class
Thanks man. Feel like I am getting better at making them!
National indoor champs next saturday, watching this will make me faster right?
great film! i felt the tension. keep it up!!
Thanks! I appreciate the support
First of all great vid.Love that your showing the real work that goes in and Joe Public can see it doesn't just happen when they hand out the medals every 4 years. What are the longest distances the guys train to on the Erg's?
I'm a self taught rower of 4 years and love the longer distances.1/2 and full marathons.(2h:57min full marathon and 38:12 for 10K - when i turned 50 late last year!)
That's what I am trying to get across! Some people think it's a turn up and win type deal! Longest distance I have done in one sitting is 24k erg, couple of them a day with weights and some other stuff 💪 💪
Thanks for the video
Appreciate it it 💪 💪
@ 7:47 when E starts hitting hard
Hmm, very interesting. I'm 65 and pulled 1500 in 7 minutes today in my HiiT class. Good idea with the plates to keep the erg from moving. Next time. :)
That's amazing! Keep up the good work!! #yamsquad
Fantastic!
Is all this glasnost since Sir David's retirement? All this footage would have seemed inconceivable a while ago.
It isn't actually! Although it does seem like a mighty coincidence!
Just watching this video gave me the nervous shits
Captures every bit of the 2k, top video!
Thanks! That was the aim!
Impressive what you kids do.
Awesome inspiring video.
Machines
Would love to know some of the times they did.
👊🙏
Unfortunately was told not to show the l times here! If you want to see some other times though you could watch any of my more recent 2k videos! #yamsquad
@@CameronBuchan thank you for your reply. Your clips are inspiring .
👊🙏
Would love to sneak into that room, cool to see
I think a lot of people would!
Cameron Buchan no doubt bud
2ks were the worst and best experience of my life. xD Never felt so shit and so good at the same time.
Exactly! Such a juxtaposition
Could you describe quickly what is your typical warm-up before a 2k test? Very impressing btw!
And your drag factor ? Is it the same for a 2k than when you train intervals?
I have made a small video discussing drag factor actually, essentially saying it is very individual. I will do a similar drag factor no matter what workout. Apart from trying to hit lowest split possible I will use a higher drag. Warm up wise, again very personal. I like to spend time on a static bike first and get a good sweat going. After that do some steady rowing on the erg, get a minute of pace in before the start of the race as well as a few bursts above at and below pace. Really trying to wake up the system that's about to be used!
Hey mate, would be good to see what kind of times these lads were getting?
Anything from 535-555
awesome vid
@ 7:47
Definitely
He looks like he's high on drugs lol
I am training for tennis but I found the erg machines demonic and challenging! I managed 1k in 4 minutes. I'll try to lower that!
Great job! You got this! #yamsquad
How do the water filled rowing machines compare to these? Done 6.39 a few weeks ago on a "water rower" at the age of 55 full eyeballs out effort!
I've actually never tried the water filled rowers. I know that they usually are 'faster' though
I go to a gym with the water rowers. Tried a concept 2 like this and it felt more painful and difficult to do the same 2k haha
Yeah, I thimk the water rowers are smoother and perhaps easier whereas the Concept 2 are more sturdy old school!.
Lads I did a 5k trial at 14. Absolute death. Did alright tho. Got about 20. 45. With an average split of 2.04.05 per 500m
I did 16km at 2:01 avarage and im 14
Did Adam ever row at RUBC? Im sure I read he went to Reading uni
He did! He rowed and studied there
What on earth are you doing here Alex :p
Jack Footer caught me! How embarrassing
Cameron Buchan Has he ever rowed at BUCS? Makes me wanna do masters, for the sake of rowing
Good communication
Fantastic...Fantastic...HAD NO IDEA THAT "ROWING" COULD LOOK LIKE THIS.....HOLY CRAP, BATMAN....THIS IS INTENSE!! i THINK I NEED A CIGARETTE......and a change of underwear...
I get goosebumps every time I watch it!
Phaha cheers
No problem!
I’m the guy that always throws up after lol
There's always one!
Cameron Buchan I hate it too
Cookie monster can do 5 minutes flat for 2k but does not like to blow own trumpet.... and is 400 lbs and a monster also.
Would be great to get cookie monster down! 😂
@@CameronBuchan In 1962, a crack commando monster black ops unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn't commit, I was one of those commandos - in return for getting out of prison early I had to shave my fur, and row for the US of A olympic team to beat the Russians ...after being forced to wear a silicon human suit and winning 4 gold medals & 3 world championships under assumed names, I swore I would never row again - I grew my fur back and went into showbiz and have never looked back since.... *sigh... look into long distance* maybe one day I will put cookie down and pick up oar....
Nice editing bro
Thanks bro! Been trying some new things!
i was the 2000th like
Hi Cam, you mention a man called Adam in this video. Whats his surname? Thanks in advance.
Haha aaaddaammm Nneeeiilllll
Ayyyy I did 3 2k's today. I almost died :)
That's awesome! The erg knows how to put you in the hurt locker! That's for sure!
I've been thinking of buying a rowing machine, this has made me want one more
That's awesome! It's a great workout! #yamsquad
What's a good time? I'm an out of shape fat bloke in his late 30's and can do about 7min 50secs on setting 10. I think if I push it further I might have a heart attack.
Don't have a heart attack! The guys in the video will all be under 6 minutes, some more than others! #yamsquad
Maybe don’t set your fan so high, a lot of us row around 3-5 resistance
Nice job there, Cameron. Does everyone follow the same warm-up or is it a matter of personal preference?
I think it is more personal to be honest especially when coming into a 2k
Cameron Buchan Thanks! Be honest now, was your heart racing just watching the guys doing their 2ks?
Oh for sure! I wanted to join in!
I rowed a 3:40 for my 1k but I’ve never done a 2k so what’s a good time to aim for( I’m in year 9 btw)
Great question James! Sub 8 minutes would be a good place to start!
6min is respected okay I’m gonna try Tuesday at 130kg
Let us know how it goes! #yamsquad
Some times would have been interesting...!
Been told not to show them!
Alright, that's fair - thanks anyways!
Around six-ish, give or take
Pain cave! Your body says, I know what the fuck you're about to do to me.
14 years old- did my first 2k today.
What are the times???
I don't think he's allowed to say because it's confidential.
Correct, times are a mystery to everyone!
Quick :-).
Between 5 minutes and 7 minutes ;)
You got it!!
Can you reassure us, Did any rowers die during the making of this video?
No rowers died during the making of this video!
That;s a relief! Are we allowed to know who won? Or what the fastest time was?
Everyone won and had a great day all around!
No problem. (My feeling is that one person was fastest and all the others died a little!)
Out of curiosity, why don’t rowing teams use slides all the time for their erg sessions?
Could be a few reasons. Perhaps one being the erg is used as a specific tool and the water is used for the technical aspect. Maybe space? Not 100% sure!
interesting to see the olift shoes
... what % are going that way (for
more solid connection and bcs
lesser ankle fexibility)?
Bit of both really depending on the athlete! I used to use deadlift shoes that didnt have the heel lift and switched over the the oly shoes recently to see what difference there was. Makes it easier to stay connected for longer
thanks @@CameronBuchanI thought I counted at least 4 prs... plus I saw a rower w/ a folded cloth for seat padding which go well off-setting the higher heels
At least 4! Yeah the folded towel is more a comfort thing rather than anything else!
Has anyone ever been really good on the erg and not great on water?
Oh definitely! The term "ergs don't float" is coined just for those people. I have been one of those on some occasions!
Great vid! Why is the resistance on most rowers around 5 and not higher?
Partly because it's supposed to be an official drag factor of 138 partly because it doesn't matter, it is very individual if you vary from 138. I had a little chat about it in a previous vlog
Thanks!
Legend🤤
Do rowers wear weightlifting shoes on the ergo? It looks like some of the guys are wearing the Adidas Powerlifts.
Hey Matt, a lot of guys do. I made a vlog about it a while back. I can't remember what number that is now!
Jesus Christ this is mental these guys are unbelievable
Hi Cameron, love the vlogs! Would you mind sharing what damper setting most the athletes use during their 2000m row?
I have made a few videos about it! But the GB test drag is 138!
Ahh I found them! Many thanks 🙏🏻
more information needed like the time to do the 2km and how many cals burnt
This data was left out on purpose
What are the resistance setting of the machine when you are doing this test? Thank you !
The general gb test resistance is 138!
Great Video!
What are the average weight height of those guys?
I'm 187cm (6'1'') 93kg and my bests are 5;59 for 2km and 1;19.1 for 500m
Im 186cm and 92kg and my best 2k is 5:58 and 500m is 1:18 so I’m technically better than you and and smaller so no big deal but if it was a competition I’d be better than you but it’s not so good work my friend ❤
How to define a phat ergo...
I've been taking notes!
the oxygen level is low compared to outdoor rowing?
No
The oxygen levels won't change from indoors to outdoors no. Maybe because you see people trying to breath? That's because they have pushed to the limit of what their bodies can do
Wow cant help but notice the chemtrail filled sky behind u.. !!!!
Haven't even thought of that! Happens often!
chemtrails are bullshit
