What a nice guy. He is far beyond needing to do interviews, yet couldn't be nicer.
the question is not 'why' it's 'how'
I started off using a dime so I have nothing to say other than
“It’s just like using a pick but you use a dime instead”
@@dogol284 I started on acoustic so i use my fingernails, used to grow all of them long. When I moved to electric I only grow my index as a pick. I can't use real guitar picks until now, it feels like a boundary between me and my instrument, lol sounds cheesy i know.
The problem that he gets (he said so in an interview) of using a coin as a plectrum, is that the metal dust will mess with the Burn pickups. His guitar technician has always to keep the pickups very clean.
what will happen if the dust stays on? I get a lot of metal dust on and next to my pickups, and I rarely clean it. I'll start cleaning it more often, but I'm just wondering what it could have already done to my pickups.
@@bacon7785 I think its just a myth 😊 Ive been playing guitar for years and I've used plastic picks, sixpences, homemade metal & brass plectrums. I put 5p on a railtrack when I was younger and that turned out a beauty! The train completely flattened on side but the opposite was almost untouched. Anyways !! Its never been a problem to me pickups-wise so I wouldn't worry about it too much just keep your pickups and guitar clean and keep rockin' 😎
This is a rerun I can absolutely live with. Well worth another watch.
Never seen a fretboard so glossy
SAME
Well it’s made out of a fire place
And broken
is glossy good?
@@roachdoggjr45 wouldn't say that. Some prefer hard laquered fretboards, some like softer consisting out of oiled wood. Depends on the player. There is no "better way"
A humble 6 pence piece has shaped music for a generation and continues to do so
I love using the round side of the pick and my cousin tried to correct me. This solidifies that you can do it how ever you want.
However you want brother!
It’s always all about the music
"He has thousands!"
This man is a blessing to humanity.
Vintage coins getting the Reverb bump :)
such a legend
Brian's such a nice guy to talk to, as I found out recently. Wonderful sound that sixpence sounded. Quite incredible, really.
Brian, a great Person and a unique musician!
Brian is a treasure. I could talk with him all day. Whether he would feel the same about the talking - well, that's a different question.
Awesome Video! I used a penny when I was younger, but now I use a Dunlop Flow. Also when I was younger I could never find my picks, so I would reach in my pocket and use a coin. I could always find a penny.
I only use a quarter. Never worry about rotation. Makes fabulous ringing sounds!💟
What a legend! Rock on Brian! \m/
So great!
Very educational and appreciated.
Brian May is the epitome of DIY when it comes to guitar!. Not many can say they (with their fathers help) built a guitar from scratch and out of whatever materials were available, including both the pickups and amp and to this day is still playing the same guitar he built in 1964!.. Of course amps and pickups may have been changed over the years, but to my knowledge it's pretty much the same guitar he built all those years ago!…
When I listen to him talking about this it makes me think of the intro to Keep Yourself Alive. As a guitarist it now makes sense how using a coin would lend itself to that kind of playing
Awesome!
I play bass using one too, the best tone
In the late 1800's we had a bicycle that had a large front wheel with a smaller rear wheel. It was a pre-chain design so the pedals were attached directly to the front wheel and in order to make the pedaling of the bicycle take less effort a larger front wheel was used as one cycle/turn of the wheel would cover a larger distance. The slang/name the bicycle picked up was the penny farthing because the front wheel was large in size just like the penny coin at the time and the rear wheel was smaller just like the farthing coin used.
Interesting factoid but very random, are you autistic?
i used a quarter as a pick back in middle school, blew everyone's minds, and this guy is doing the same thing in an IRL spinal tap bit.
god i love life.
Coin can never get stuck on the string, pretty much like round side of pick. Once You try it you can never go back..
But i noticed in different picks in tone when you hit the strings i like useing Dunlop picks mid Gage pick with 10 gage string light tops heavy bottoms for tone
It's been a long search for me to find the right pick too. It'll probably change in the future again, but at the moment, I'm using a Polish coin: 50 groszy. I prefer this 50 groszy coin above the sixpence (which I've tried as well), because it's a bit bigger and thicker. As I'm visiting Poland on a regular basis anyway, I wouldn't find a cheaper pick anywhere....
Yes exactly, it’s far easier to play precise leads with a thicker pick.Acoustic gets a thin pick.
I know what he means about not using the pointed end of a pick. I always hold my purple tortex picks sideways for more control and more contact surface area.
Watching this, I'm wondering why I stopped using coins. When I first started playing as a kid, I lost so many picks (and still do) that I'd often use a quarter and it worked great. Then I started just using my fingers, even on acoustic - and I don't mean for fingerpicking, I mean using the fingernail of my index finger like a pick. My bandmates would freak out wondering how my nail didn't rip off, but I never had too much problem. I'm going to have to bust out a quarter later today and jam. Lol.
That's funny, I also use my index finger as a pick sometimes. I have recently been thinking of creating a thimble-like removable tip to go over the index finger which would have a pick at the end. I have been trying to look for something like that everywhere. I guess I'll have to invent it.
@@JohnPrepuce Damn, good idea!!!!!
this is soo cool im literally about to try thisssws
Woow i noticed he has some high action
I have heard of guys using a quarter , but this the first proof that someone is uaing a coin. I don't seem to make it work, but he certainly does.Always a class act and real gentleman.
Although they're probably about the heaviest thing you could use for a pick, Brian uses them very gracefully until he lets rip with a killer solo that is !
I started using coins years back when I found out billy gibbons did brian may is another reason to use em
The most British band ever!!
Particularly because the frontman is originally from another country (Zanzibar in Africa). British culture was build from immigrants
Brian May... then he did!
I've been experimenting with an Aussie ten-cent coin, a five, a twenty, and a bunch of different size mettle washers from my mothers toolbox... Must say I am loving the serration on the coins I've tried. Nearly all Australian coins have cerated edges to varying degrees, but six ounces appear to be thinner than a ten from Australia, I would love absolutely love to try a six pence. Been looking around for a few... If anyone knows of where I can find some......
You can pick up old sixpences fairly cheap on Ebay. If you prefer a thin sixpence ( the best I think, I recommend it!) 1929 is a good year. That's the year mine is & its literally 1mm thick. All the rest I've got are later down the years and much thicker. Also if you put into the search engine on Ebay "Sixpence guitar pick" you can get a sixpence that has been made into the shape of a traditional guitar pick if that would suit you better. I've got one of those too , they're pretty cool ! Hope this helps !
If you're still looking -- check out a local coin shop or a collectibles show/fair in your area. A lot of dealers have a junk bin with discount coins. A "lowball" sixpence that's scratched or worn is scorned by most collectors, but is ideal if you want to use them for other purposes. (I've made picks and buttons out of obsolete coins.) Or you could contact a collector in your area (most clubs have regular meetups that are advertised) and they might be willing to sell or even give you one.
I just wanted to add -- I think that Australian sixpences had silver in them, all the way through until they were replaced with decimalization. But in the UK, they switched from silver/copper alloy to nickel/copper (cupronickel) starting in 1947. (And pre-1920 sixpences were more than 90% silver.) I have wondered whether the coin composition might result in a different "feel" when using them as picks.
Best ever.
That’s how Brian has his regal sound.
I use a 1929 sixpence , the thinnest year I've ever seen. All the rest are a little too thick for my taste
Huh, good to know! Cheers
I only use mercury wheat pennies that came from the left pocket of a Hungarian that died from prostate cancer on a Wednesday
@Eddie Dean I sincerley hope you don't go around robbing Hungarians after they've died for mercury wheat pennies on Wednesdays 😂
@@eddiedean9886 bruh what
i like to put quarters in the wash machine, and play guitar with a Dunlop Ultex Sharp 1.0
This is so a reupload!!! I know ive seen this years ago.
Being an American who collects coins I'm happy that I can use the same coin since I have several.
Brian, mate, you forgot to switch the amp on. It's an electric guitar, you know... :-)
You couldn't have ac30s in his dressing room. If you watch the full rig rundown you'll see he has custom vox ac30s by mike hill.
Brian May inspired me to use a coin instead of pick,
also because it sounds better
Heh that loox like a Reg Mombassa shirt !!!!
The original Rig Rundown came out more than 5 years ago and i still don't know if he was being serious about the year of the coin affecting the tone
Probably so. They keep changing the metals they use to make coins. For example, pennies haven’t been made from copper for years. The copper is worth more than a penny.
@@loveistheanswer8137 to be quite honest that sounds like the same mental gimnastics Billy Corgan pulls off to say that the color of the paint changes the sound. Even if it’s the pick, the difference must be too minimal to actually notice (if we’re talking about the percentage of one of the metals in the mix, and not a full-on material change)
@@linksayajin2958 it could also have something to do with the edge on the coin. I know there is a difference in feel and sound between nylon and plastic picks. I had a tortoise shell pick I absolutely loved, but alas it got lost. Either way, Brian May is one of the top guitarists, so you can’t really discount anything he says. It works for him.
@@loveistheanswer8137 The difference between Nylon and Tortex or Tortoise is very noticeable because the shapes and materials are very different. You can't say the same if you're talking about a coin made of copper covered steel and a coin that's copper covered steel + bronze. Also, the shape is supposed to be the same because it's, you know, a coin! I know we can't discount what anyone says, because even if the tone is actually the same, there's still a psychological effect on the player, but i personally believe that it's just that - psychological.
I starting playing with coins because of him
Can this damage the guitar? My parents said not to use a coin cuz it will break my guitar, what do you think?
will quarter do if I dont have a sixpence?
Try a dime. Closer in size, I believe
Yup a dime would suffice, its got that serrated edge too just like a sixpence
*damn* that is a glossy ass fretboard
I will never be as decent a human being as this guy - makes me think.
I have tried to use a coin but it's not so easy to sound good
He found a crooked sixpence against a crooked stile
I play with a nickel, same vibe
"They're very cheap"
akdjakfjsj, yea we know
How does he still manage to get Sixpences in 2020?
I do believe he will have had many of them for years, I have! Got about 20 of 'em ! You can pick them up on Ebay. No pun intended!
Seiko 7548-7000
2 pence user here, the trick is hold it very loosely,
Harto loco
he still uses the same guitar :,)
And still has the same hairstyle
Cuz they don’t make a sevenspence?
Man I could walk under that action.. And I'm not short..
Let's just hope Britain keeps them in circulation lol.
Bryan May,,, You should ranked WAY higher on the BEST GUITARIST EVER!!! If they’d been fair they probably at least paired him with ONE other BEST,,, JUST NOT ANYTHING UP TO 7. One, One, ONE!!!
this video has 69 comments, hah, nice.

Those nasty,nasty 1960's 6pence . Unplayable
So fuckin weird
I tried this, it sounds like shit
After all there's only one Brian May
Seems kind of “Fruitcake”… wouldn’t you say, Brian?

SlapMyBass3825 We're going back through our Rig Rundowns and picking out our favorite clips and reposting them. Some people aren't keen on watching a 30-minute video, but a more digestible click on a certain topic brings a bigger audience, and in result, hopefully engages with them enough that they check out the full video. (Full transparency: we got the idea from JRE Clips - Joe Rogan's subsidiary channel - and others that re-use their content to engage new/bigger audience.) Thanks for your feedback and support ... @@premierguitar Mate, who gives a Shit, this was great footage that I haven't seen before, bring it on
A great guitarist and genius, and I really love what he did for music, however he should stop being the Ambassador for these lab rat vaccines. It makes me wonder if he was paid off for plugging the vaccines. Please stick with music Brian. The Vaccine isn't working. My son a nurse took all the vaccines and a booster and got sick. And now he's so pissed. I'm unvaccinated and had 2 mild cases of Covid. So maybe my immune system is good being a smoker and a drinker and 30lbs overweight. Who knows. I'll take my chances with Natural Immunity. Please stop plugging the poisons Brian.
Probably one of the lamest gimmicks
