      There was that time after Chelsea postponed her wedding to Charlie & Evelyn comforted him. Even if it ended with a joke, that was a moment where 2 people who took great pride in not liking each other & telling them so frequently, showed maybe not all is dysfunctional between them. As some have said, it was more like Holland Taylor comforting Charlie Sheen in that scene.

      True, every comedy show needs some heart. No wonder the later seasons it busted. There wasn't any heart left, it was just mean jokes aimed at each other's expenses. Can't laugh at the tragedies of life if there is nothing to celebrate about life.

      The Rockster just because it did well with Seinfeld, doesn't mean it will do well in other sitcoms. Seinfeld's set up and lack of plot is different than Two and a Half Men's style and existence of plot.

    Every main character in that series triangle had a specific purpose. Jake's was to make Charlie realize how reliable and loving he can be, and for his dad, to motivate him to keep his head above the water (he didn't turn into a real schmock until Jake became independent). Alan's purpose - aside from being Jake's dad - was to make Charlie deal with his oppressed childhood memories. Charlie's function as a smooth cynicist was to help Alan (re)gain as much self-confidence as possible with all the female vultures in his life... And with regard to little Jake, to save their father-son relationship. He never talked about it but throughout the first four seasons, he kept jumping in as some kind of "communication decoder" between the two. After that, they pretty much alienated the characters from their original personalities, for better and for worse.

    • @danitho
      @danitho Рік тому +5

      I realize this comment is old but now that I'm watching this show again and having seen the Big Bang Theory, but the way they handled the characters on BBT was far more responsible than 2 & 1/2 men. Even though it was still funny, I'd say they started dropping the ball of characterization as soon as Season 2. It just got worse for everyone, even Charlie, as the seasons progressed. They all became caricatures of themselves.

    Not sure if anyone noticed. But season 1 had lots of little moments where Jake and Alan start to accept the divorce, and where Charlie, though less often, realizes that his life style might be hurting people without him meaning to. S1E6 had a great moment at the end, when Charlie and his mother have a conversation that makes him reconsider how he hurts the woman he is with by just ignoring them after, without giving them the common courtesy to tell them he isnt interested in a serious relationship.
    These moments were only in season 1, and its really confusing why they vanished from here on.

It's clear that Lorre realized that they were getting loaded just with the gag formula so they went on. I'd say the show's decline started around season 6 and Kutcher coming killed all that was left.

      But the comedy was great too, if you want family values, full house.

    • @PrimetimeX
      @PrimetimeX 5 років тому +7

      @Anne Liesveld Full house was actually all about stereotypes. 2 and a half men is distinctly an adult show, and the vast majority of the minor characters are not stereotypes. The whole point of this show is to give a comedic and realistic outlook on the life of a boy living with a wealthy playbook and a broke leech looks like.
      The family-friendliness of the show is a cover-up for the broken reality of the family, stemming from the behavior of Evelyn.

    I miss those moments cause Alan was always a very supportive and caring dad. But sometimes jake was just a pain in The ass, treating Alan like crap and even looking ungreateful for Alan's Love. Jake was still funny during all The seasons, but i Dont know, i just wish He and Alan showed more affection for each other like this

      Couldn't agree more. I mean, I still think the first 5-6 seasons are comedy gold but when you go back to the first two seasons, especially season 1, at times you can see a melancholic vibe perfectly mixed with the comedy that took the show to a new level.

    My mom and my dad split up when I was nine. She was pregnant with my little sister Ripleigh back then. It was in 2011. My dad went through his parents divorce when he was a kid, too. Only unlike my dad, who used to live with his dad, I live with my mom.

    I notice that lot of Chuck Lorre shows have great (or at least decent/passable) ideas behind them as the premise of the show's episodes, but they always lack in the character development. There's almost never a touching moment where they stop to reflect something serious or deal with a tragedy or just show general growth and support. They do happen, as evidenced by this scene, but they're extremely rare and more often then not, they never have any lasting impact. Next episodes, it's right back to cheap laughs and the usual sitcom formula. Don't get me wrong, a sitcom that is based on comedy should focus primarily on that comedy, but the occasional serious moment, tragedy or just general growth of a character as they come to terms with a serious situation they've been faced with would be nice. 90's sitcoms did that and they managed to make it work. Modern sitcoms should be able to do the same.
