I prefer the boot so I can shower etc and let it breathe. Are you supposed to sleep with the boot on? I’ve been taking it off at night, fracture of cuneiform
A bit late to the party, but had to comment. Having worn both the boot and a cast, the cast comes out on top. Several reasons; the boot kept loosening and rubbing on my achilles tendon, kept hitting the front toe part of the boot, the velcro strap cause bruising on my calf, and I now have severe plantar fasciitis that is getting on my last nerve. With the cast, sure you can't take it off and the itching, peeling and smell is a mini issue, but.....the support was better (because it's molded to your foot), no bruising, less clunky, and I slept better. I used a scooter both times, the boot had my shin hurting, but not the cast. The boot needs a lot of reworking in the comfort and fit area, 'cause one size definitely does not fit all.
Professional athlete here. Was in the boot. Had the boot off just to go across the room. Crutches slipped, did a crazy maneuver to protect the ankle and ended up breaking my elbow-radius. However I maintain I was walking quicker due to having a boot. Trimaleolar fracture and walking at 7 weeks with a cane and no boot. 2-3 weeks ahead of schedule.
Growing up I constantly hurt my right ankle. One time the doctor and I got in a discussion of boot or cast. I said if you put me in a boot I will re-hurt myself in the boot. I had a history of this. Doc said I did not know what I was talking about and he put me in a boot. One week later while wearing the boot I ripped a tendon. It required sugery and a cast.......thanks doc. It was eventually found out I have drop foot. I have not gotten hurt in seven years since getting a MAFO.
guys.. seriously, if you have the self-discipline to treat the boot like you have a cast then its worthy.. not to mention that the boot gives you the advantage of 1) you will spend less money and less time in your recovery (talking about physiotherapy after healing) 2) YOU CAN TAKE THE BOOT OF AND APPLY ICE TO THE INJURED AREA (which rapidly increases healing and the quality of healing) 3) you can shower (in order to avoid injury, just shower sitting down) 4) you can accelerate your recovery by going into partial weight bearing phase (after the acute phase is over) and that will decrease swelling and give you a more functional foot faster (decreased recovery period and physiotherapy period) and a personal tip for those with ankle sprains (of any degree but especially grade 3 sprains) - sleep with the boot because it will make you recover faster by making the tore ligaments heal shorter (less time required to heal), instead of longer great video! peace
I have previously worn a cast with a stirrup and it was a struggle trying to function and recovery was so difficult. After that, I don't ever wish to wear a cast again unless there is absolutely no choice. With a boot, at least I can attend to the swelling and inflammation which can damage the soft tissues and bone.
Really helpful, thank you. Exactly the information I was looking for. As an older person (66) still in a cast following surgery all I needed to know was why my surgeon has already planned for me to be in a cast for six weeks and then a boot for eight weeks. It's now clear what his plan is and makes complete sense. I dont' mind the cast, it was supposed to be temporary but the waiting list for Fracture Clinic appointments means it'll be five weeks before it's replaced by a permanent one for a week or so before being replaced by a boot. The temporary one is heavy and as it's a backslab with crepe bandages I could, in theory, take it off myself but I have absolutely no plans to do so. I just want the injury to heal without me complicating things by getting another injury. I know I'll have months of rehab to get back as much use of the ankle as possible and that's absolutely fine. It was a bad break and as long as I can control the pain when it's bad I can cope.

Professional athlete here. Anecdotal but I was walking quicker due to having a boot. Trimaleolar fracture and walking at 7 weeks with a cane and no boot. 2-3 weeks ahead of schedule. Went straight from scooter to walking with shoe. Never did walk with the boot on. Boot also allows you to do minor PT.

Great viewpoint! Going in for surgery for ruptured Brevis tendon and some small tears elsewhere. He told me first 3 weeks in cast then next 3 in an air-cast boot and 3 weeks ankle brace
I have the cast after operation I'm scared if I will be able to walk with out my walker after the cast is removed and is it better to use the boots thereafter.. Please advise what size boots should I get as I'm a size 4 or 5 depending on the cut of the shoes
I have been super careful with having the boot. I make sure to have it on every time I get up. I had the choice of boot or cast shoe for my broken foot. I started out in the cast shoe and went into the boot. I got x-rays yesterday which was just over 4 weeks out, and my foot looks great
Is it ok to take off the boot for a couple of hour while laying in bed? I’m asking this because it can be quite comforting letting the foot have less pressure all day long. If I take it off for about two hours or so am I messing up my healing? I don’t move it I just lay sideways.
I have chronic foot pain that no one can diagnose. I have worn both boots and casts. Personally I hate boots for the following reasons. First, if I can take something off, I will. Being in a cast, where I cannot easily remove it keeps my foot/ankle immobilized. Second, and most importantly for me, the sole of boots are flat; they do not conform to your foot like casts do. The boots actually cause more pain in my foot. Third, they are less bulky than boots. As far as not being able to shower, they make silicone shower covers that work very well. Just my $0.02.....
Gotta drive so I'm taking the chance. I'm careful though. I walked on a cast when it wasn't a walking cast. Had wheels too. I guess I'm just a bad patient. I have things to do.
Yo I was recently shot in the leg with a .40 caliber I got a couple questions before I say I already had my surgery because it fractured my leg bone and the entry wound is below my right cheek and the exit wound is in the front thigh area on the same leg and they said that my nerve spreaded , May I ask that what would be more effective a cast or a boot I have a temporary Boot because I do hAve foot drop and if you can get back to me thank you
I have a non-displaced fracture of my ankle. My orthopedist gave me a boot to wear. I actually thought it would be much more comfortable than it is. My heel doesn’t even naturally reach where the heel should go and it’s really irritating my skin. My doctor said I can take it off to shower but that’s about it. I’m trying to follow his directions but that sure is difficult. Is it okay to wear it rather loosely if I’m not moving? I tighten it if I need to get up for anything. They really didn’t give me any direction.
Same. I Literally broke my ankle yesterday afternoon, non displaced fracture. Received a boot with little instructions, and I don't even think they put it on right. Super uncomfortable, and doesn't feel supportive at all. I'm in so much extreme pain I can't even take care of my kids properly and I'm a stay home with 2 smalls kids. did they give you a wrap to apply before you put on the boot? Or do you just wear with socks/barefoot? Thanks in advance, I'm just really suffering right now. I'm looking Anywhere for advice or help.
I’ve been in a cast for 6 weeks and when I took it off I couldn’t feel the bottom of my foot and 2 months later I still can’t feel the bottom why is that???

I am not on medicatio for osteporosis because i dont want to go on fosamax yet. i am on HRT, and hoping to get forteo
I broke my fifth metatarsal and doctor put me in a boot. My foot is narrow and I have skinny ankles and legs. Said I should not weight bear. This boot doesn’t feel stable enough on my foot no matter how much I tighten it when I am on crutches and it feels really heavy!! When I walk with crutches, I could feel the weight of the boot put strain on my broken bone. Any advice? I feel like a fitted cast would be more effective?
Exact same experience. The weight of the boot is literally causing me so much more pain when I lift my foot. I don't feel like my injury is supported at all, idk what to do, I just broke my ankle yesterday.
I have a 6 weeks cast. But doc asked to remove ut after 3 weeks and again put it for 4 more weeks. I have zone 1 metatarsal fracture. Can i wear show after 3 weeks cast

I am four months after a tri mal, no surgery because I have Lupus and Raynaud's. Two of the breaks are healing well but the malleous is only at 20 percent. They put me in a boot after five weeks. I felt great in the cast I hate the boot. Can I go back into a cast?
I fractured my metatarsal and the doctor didnt allow me to wear boots. Currently in cast for about a month already. But i hate cast so much bcs of a lot discomfort it put me through😭

i fell off my skateboard, the moment i hit the ground, i heard a pop and a crack, then, i couldn’t feel my toes for a couple seconds, then couldn’t stand up without almost falling over, and the doctors gave me a boot and crutches until i get x rays but i think my foot is broken because of the way i fell and heard that noise. i’m possibly going to go get x rays done today.
You must be in US, I feel so much compassion for you people out there, to have to wait days for a couple of x-rays after an accident !!! You need to be wealthy in there to get the same treatment that the poorest guy in Europe would get over here for free !!!

I just bagged myself a trimalleolar ankle fracture a week ago and have a cast on while I wait for my operation and I can already feel my leg wasting away 😔
Oh nice! I'm in that boat as we speak. Same injury, waiting for surgery. My starter cast is tight as hell and my heel is sore. Not looking forward to another 3 months of this.

Hi Dr, been in a half leg cast for 2 wks with non weight bearing for a nondisplaced 5th metatarsal fracture in the shaft of right foot. Doctor said yesterday's xray showed that the fracture has actually widened more than in the initial xray and wants 3 more wks on cast and NWB. With the cast now, boot later rule, is it ok to instead request a boot instead of the cast? I cannot afford to be at home any longer as family and work will not allow it.
In my opinion no. Your fracture is worsened u need more protection. I hope u are never stepping on it? Pls use clutches ans try to keep ur usual life, i know its hard. Im on clutches rn
