I’m about to trade my Darkglass e500 for this Rumble 800. Darkglass never released the midi foot switch, so connecting via Bluetooth to the Heat & accessing the app for the pedals is almost overkill.

@@TylerSpicer Hell no, my experience is quite limited. I've only played GK, Fender, Marshall, Trace Elliott, Markbass, Hartke and Aguilar I think. Those and my Roland cube practice amp. I am starting to test the waters for a good amp to play stages after years of just playing at home. My idea is to get something nice that will last me a while, but it's hard to get to try them here. That's what your video is so useful. Also my bass teacher agrees with you that aguilars are the bomb.
I'm intrigued by the GR Bass, Aguilar, EICH and Bergantino more than anything. Perhaps barefaced cabs too and maybe GK... But I need to save for a while...

I am absolutely shocked! Why?, you might ask. Because I agree with your rankings in all but one instance. I do believe that GK deserves a bit higher ranking than a "B", but I am with you on all of the others. I personally own three Mesa bass amps (Walkabout Scout 12 combo, M-Pulse 600 head and a WD800), and I love all three of them! Over my 50+ years as a bassist/bass guitarist (I play both upright and electric, but mostly electric bass guitar), I have owned and toured with Ampeg, Fender, Markbass, Thunderfunk, TC Electronic, and the predecessor to Eich amps. However, once I started using Mesa bass amplification, I knew that I had found my ideal bass amp brand. Since the late 1990s, I have also owned several other Mesa bass amps (most notably, a Bass 400+ and a few different M6 and M9 Carbine models). Every one of them has been a superb amp, and they are engineered and built like no other, with the possible exception of Aguilar. Add to that first-rate customer service and technical support, and you just can't beat Mesa Engineering!

I've owned so many of the brands you've rated here, even the ones at the top end...I now have owned a Bergantino B|AMP plus their CN112 and CN210 cabinets for a few years and that system in itself is the all-time top sounding rig I've ever played through, let alone owned. Jim Bergantino is a real master and designs the finest ever bass gear available!!! I took my gear to a jam night some time ago and several guys played through it without changing the EQ. Many different bass orientated instruments were used, including passive one pickup designs, passive two pickups and active one and two pickups, as well as a rubber/plastic stringed ukele. All l did was adjust the input gain. Everything sounded amazing and competed equally. Yes indeed, Bergantino is without any doubt, the finest.....Den Finch xxx

I think you nailed it! During the last 40 years I've gone through GK/Eden/MB/Aguilar/Ampeg/Ashdown/Hartke/Genz Benz/Fender Rumble, the rumble and Aguilar were the top 2 for me, with the Fender rumble 800 210 neo combo coming out on top over the Aguilar TH500, mostly due to the higher power and ballsier low end and how easy it is to use on gigs w/ two neo 10's. The Aguilar, for my concerns, required constant fussing about. Until now I didn't realize the rumble was genz benz designed. You did say that right? I'm considering the Aguilar AG700 currently.

I have had the Aguilar AG 700 amp for the past year. It is very clean with lots of head room. It is definitely not scooped and is also different than the Tone Hammer as it does not try to emulate a tube head although I like the Tone Hammer for the tube like signature. I went for the AG 700.

The issue I see is that bassists of a certain age will have had the proper amp; say a Trace before being sold off and Eden similarly. From experience, those amps more than hold their own, even now if you are willing to carry them! My Ampeg V4B and 8x10’ was great but got woolly after running for 6 hours on a stage. The Trace, SWR and Eden were a more reliable upgrade (no power valves). Now I have a GB Streamliner 900, which is good and a Quilter BassBlock - good, lightweight amps. With a pair of BB2’s I’m pretty happy BUT, my Eden WT pre running into a QSC 1600W amp through a Bag End 2x10’ and 4x10’ really moved air! I also have Mesa 800+ pre which is sweet into an amp or into the return on the Quilter. Once the FOH gets hold of it, you could be just as well with a Pod XT, monitor wedge or IEM’s!

I generally agree. I’ve only been playing for 6 years. I have owned 8 basses and 5 bass amps. I’ve played some on your list in stores and heard some through good headphones on UA-cam, etc.. I currently have TC Electronic 115 and a Fender Rumble 40 that are both good, but I have always been haunted by my first amp’s sound which was from a small Ampeg. Great video! While I completely understand not liking the Hydrive series (SOOOOOO bright and clicky), the older Hartke amps like the HA series have always blown me away especially for how cheaply they can be found in the used market. Kind of the opposite of how you described Eden IMO - super tight and VERY mid heavy with not so much emphasis on highs and booming lows. I feel like they do funk and slap perfectly!

I played a Peavy 400 watt w/15" speaker, and when I ran my active bass into the passive input, the sound was quite impressive. Plugged into the active input, not so good. When I cranked it up at a party, it sounded like an angry tree, and knocked a mounted bow saw off the wall. It had a Lot of wooden sounding growl.

All makes sense. It's hard to elevate Ampeg to the top tier, just because they've widened the range to cover everything from meh entry level, up to rock monsters. But, I feel that recently, for the solid working intermediate level practical working musician amps, Ampeg are beating Aguilar's Tonehammers and similar, with the Venture series. And, I like Ampeg's cab range better too, there's more great options. And then, on the Vintage side, if I was in a studio/recording side, I'd probably prefer to have an Ampeg V-4b than an Aguilar. But, like you said, if your a fan of that character of sound - you're a fan for life. Once you get into the big amps, Aguilar excels. Can hear it comparing Rocco Palladino's bass sound on the recent Malibu live recording on Aguilar, vs the older Joshua one on Ampeg. Whether it's playing or recording, no doubt in my mind, the newer recording on the Aguilar both sounds much better and is the better practical choice.

Great perspective. I agree on all brands except EA. EA iAmp 800 and iAmp classic can add a great tone at louder volumes when the input gain is driven slightly into the red. Hard to do in an apartment or studio so not everyone gets to experience the benefits when trying them out. True, they are expensive. Great abilities to nail an "acoustic" upright tone when used with a piezo through the EQ. The presets are outstanding as well to modify tone for upright or bass guitar.

    My rankings:
    1) Ampeg - This is specifically for their tube amps: the SVT, V4-B, the PF-50T, and the B15-N. There will never be anything that sounds better than Ampeg tube amp through an 810 or 212 Ampeg cab, in my opinion.
    2) Fender - The most variety of great amps. That ranges all the way from the very cheap Rumble to the midpriced Bassman to the all-tube Superbassman.
    3) Orange - Mostly here for the AD200B. Best tube bass head I've heard. I also like some of their smaller amps, but they don't have the variety that the brands above them have.
    4) Mesa Boogie - I really like their Subway series as well as the Walkabout. But this ranking is really for the Mesa Boogie Bass Prodigy Four: 88. Incredible all-tube amp if you can find it. Yes, I'm a tube snob.
    5) Darkglass - Amazing if you play metal. I don't. But I have to respect the design and practicality of these.
    6) MarkBass - Pretty sterile, but not bad.
    7) Hartke - Horrible. Would not own one of these again.
    8) TC Electronic - Somehow worse than Hartke. May just be the one combo I owned, though. I've heard the newer standalone heads are better.
I haven't tried the rest, except for one Peavey combo when I was 14. I didn't know what a good amp even sounded like at the time, so I'm not going to rank them.

Hey! Thank you so much and sorry for taking so long to get back.
I'm guessing smaller is better in this instance, so looking for killer tone in a reasonable sized package I would go for a Mesa Boogie Walkabout Scout 12 or 15 Combo. Gorgeous, slightly vintage, but can be made more modern if you want tone. Bloomy low end, warm mids. I think they're great! Alternatively, maybe something like the Aguilar DB115 with a small tone hammer head. Of course, there's also the Ampeg B15 which has made me smile every time I've played one in a way that no other bass amp constantly manages to do. They also sound way better than any B15 sim I've tried...
      So any of:
      Mesa Walkabout Scout 12/15 Combo
      Aguilar Tonehammer 350 + DB115/112 Cab
      Ampeg B15
Would be my dream amp combinations for your situation. I'd be delighted with any of them and would probably own those, if I didn't need my rig to be more portable for gigs!
Thank you for the kind words, and let me know if you end up with any of these - I'll be jealous! T

Also - I know you said you don't care for the lower-end Ashdown stuff - does that mean you would recommend I avoid the new Ashdown 'Studio' models? Thanks!

    • @TylerSpicer
      @TylerSpicer  3 роки тому

Hey Michael! I haven’t played any Bugera amps, but I do know they’re mostly clones, so if you like what they’re based on, you’re probably gonna like them! However, early on there was some bad rep with their reliability and even catching fire etc. So I would approach with caution for anything that’s not recent. I think the lower end Ashdown stuff now is pretty solid, if unremarkable to me. The studio stuff looks a little bit of an improvement, but the MAG stuff has never impressed me! T

Thanks for the video. I'm hesitant to ask this because I feel like if you omitted a brand from the list, it's probably for a good reason (like not having a tier low enough) but what are your opinions on SWR, Crate, Blackstar or even Ibanez? Maybe these are more common in the States...all common on the budget side of things, like comparable to Hartke. I have an Ibanez Promethean 300PH Class D Bass Head...something like 300watts @ 4...a really nice, dependable little amp. Any words of warning on SWR, Crate, Blackstar etc?

Had to stop the video at 4:27. Victor Wooten, Billy Sheehan, Frank Bello, Dave Ellefson, etc. use Hartke for a reason. I know this list is subjective, but your tastes are better suited for a classic thumpy dark tone. Not my thing.

I generally agree with the list. The Bergantino stuff is probably by favorite. I like Dark Glass overall but as a 90% clean player, I don't feel I would go with them at the time. My main amp is a G-K MB212-II. I wouldn't put them in S class but I might nudge them up to A. I got it at too good of a deal to pass up. Demo model from Sweetwater for $500 plus tax with the warranty. That's a lot of amp for $500. I also get a lot of use out of a Rumble 100 with a replacement speaker. Obviously not giggable by itself but I really like the tone at reasonable volumes and I like the unscooped tone slightly more than the G-K.

I have one about the ampeg B100R on my channel for just that purpose. I’d suggest investing in a better DI pedal for recording rather than an amp. A 57 and a small 8inch speaker is gonna give you a lot of midrange but not much bottom end support. For recording the wattage is not important. A quality DI would be your best bet e.g. Tech 21 VT Bass or Aguilar TH DI. T

I agree with you for the most part, at least in terms of brands that I've tried.
2 things though: TC Electronic is owned by Behringer and ethically, I can't touch that brand. Second, GK is a brand I'll never touch again. I had an amp from them over 20 years ago that I sent to the California factory for repair and this is what happened: when I got the amp back 2-3 months later, it wasn't even fixed properly (bi-amp model... woofer amp worked, tweeter amp still did not work). More importantly, there was a Guitar Center price tag attached to it... 🤔? It took me a few moments to piece together what happened. Gallien-Krueger was too incompetent to fix their own equipment, so they outsourced the job to Guitar Center, of all places! Cuz I go to GC for ALL my quality repair work, upgrades, and equipment (sarcasm intended). And then, Guitar F'ing Center used my F'ing equipment for a floor demo model, which is absolutely unacceptable. For the same price of shipping and repair, I could have had Schroeder in Chicago (which was local - now defunct) repair the amp and probably make it better. But GK said they could take care of it, and even encouraged me to send it out there cuz they could do superior work. What a joke of a company.
