Brilliant Starlo! I know a few who’ve been doing this for many a year, a hybrid of contact nymphing with spin gear. They put spin reels on euro type rods. Some even live bait , tying grass hoppers, mudeyes onto small hooks. It’s darn effective, particularly on those small creeks. Very versatile.
Hi Steve, greetings to Australia to the counter-legs. I'm writing to you from Prague, I also fish with a UL rod (c.w. 0.3 g - 3 g) and it's a lot of fun. I just found out that if you have hooks without a barb, you need to have a fast reel (6 : 1 ratio) and always reel really fast, otherwise the trout and grayling jump and fall halfway to the angler. Good luck, have a nice day, actually sorry night, you are + 10 hours from Prague. Bye Eric.
@@StarloGetsReel i was actually being naughty and referring to the sicko vid doing the rounds. I still do enjoy your actual content though. Surely you've heard about the video. Maybe you even know Cathy Lee from Tasmania?

Can see many applications for this rod apart from trout. Luderick and mullet flies, garfish and micro plastics . I want one. Looks like a 2500 size reel Starlo .
Great video Steve, that did look like a lot of fun! Have you ever fished for Trout here in Western Australia? I’d love to take my young fella out, even though I’m not a great fresh water fisherman.
Hi Steve, I was thinking of this (8ft noodle, not a miller) for my kids as an intro to nymphing and fly fishing. How did u go with the mono sticking to the rod in the rain? Also, aside from the versatility of switching to lures, what casts tungsten nymphs better? This or a dedicated euro fly rod? Cheers and thanks!
Good plan! I didn't have much trouble with mono sticking. I can definitely cast the nymphs further and more accurately on this gear than on a standard Euro-nymphing fly set-up.
I find my line sinks fast any on my spinner set up, Any recommendations to stop that that's not actual fly-fishing floating line ?What line is best Braided, Floro?
Jason, it's good if the length below the surface sinks fast. Helps get the flies down. Hold as much of the brighter coloured stuff above the surface off the water as you can (any bright, fluorescent mono or braid will work). If you want this bit to float, try greasing it lightly with some fly line floatant or even vaseline.
I use lots of different nymphs - some I tie myself and some I buy. I reckon weight/sink rate, size and how you present them is far more important than the exact pattern. And my Ridgeline Infinity jacket saved my bacon that day. At least the top half of me was dry! 😉
Looks effective, but much less efficient and versatile than a fly outfit set up with a mono rig. If I had a beginner that wasn't confident casting flies I'd probably set them up with a tenkara rod before a spin outfit. Still, looks like a nice bit of kit.
Just as an afterthought, it'd be a great rod for casting streamer flies for big spawn run browns. And would do a good job flicking an indicator setup about.
@@StarloGetsReel it’s ok I’m sure any ultra light will work I’m gonna just use a little bobber and a euro jig and jig it like you would do with a soft plastic jig u think this will work mate?
How about adding links to all the tackle used in you videos. Also, detailed shots of the various flies and lures would be appreciated.

Great to hear from you, and I agree about those barbless hooks! 👍
Mine arrived in the mail today . Beautiful rod . Many applicarions
Good stuff! Enjoy it. 👍
I caught my first Brook trout in the same creek. Interesting using the spin gear. Thx Steve.

Yes, I've caught a few WA trout. Some nice water down south. Thanks for watching!

Hahaha! It was only a matter of time before someone tried euro nymphing on a spin rod Steve, I wonder what you've unleashed here.....;)
Thanks Peachy. Yes, crazily effective. Just an extension of the spawn-run drift rigging approach really. I knew it'd work.
Which euro nymphs do you recommend also what clothing do you wear in the conditions you fished in

Does this rod break down in the middle or at the handle?
Yep. Mid-point ferrule.
