You did the Weston meter a disservice saying it is not as good as a built-in camera meter. It is far superior. When new, it will have come with the Weston Inver cone. That allows the meter to take incident light readings that unlike your camera, do not become inaccurate due to subject failure. The accuracy of the Weston meter was legendary, back in the 1970's at least one UK camera magazine used a Weston meter to test the accuracy of the meter in the camera's they were testing. The big weakness of the Weston, apart from its age, is the rather limited light sensitivity range when compared to Silicon Photo Diodes or even Cds cells. Cds cells do suffer from over red sensitivity and therefore can give spurious readings, the Selenium cells show a remarkable tolerance to different colours of light. The Weston was the king of meters right up until around the 1980's and as I am sure you would agree, a beautiful instrument to hold and use. Despite my comments above, I did enjoy your video and am pleased that you made it and helped bring these beautiful meters to the attention of a wider audience.

The setting of the film sensitivity does not look correct here. According to the user manual, the sensitivity is set as a "Weston Rating" in the window above the aperture ring. Conversion tables from ASA to Weston Rating are on the web but as a general rule Weston Rating = 0.8 ASA.

Photography, as you know doubles and halves. It makes no effective difference as 0.8 is closer than 2 or 0.5. The latitude of the film will be fine.

What an interesting site...I'm re-entering the world of film photography having last dabbled at school on the 70s in my Physics A level. Looking forward to learning with you!

My Master V has just packed up! Amazingly my more ancient 'Master' still seems to work well.

A lot depends on how they're stored and how much they are used, but they are far more durable than you'd expect. I hope it foes on and on!

In excellent condition you can pick these up for about 20 quid, so not worth a lot. If you have a film camera without a meter, it'd be useful, especially if you have the invercone.

Sadly the glass has fallen in so will stop the needle giving a true reading. My Master 5 has same problem it failed in the early 70's when I worked in electronics factory and one of they guys in the mold shop got it open for me and I glued it back but that has bow failed again, so now I use Euro Master, still very good.

Nice video, but I recoiled at the word "toy"; in it's day it was certainly not that. £19 in 1954 is like £546 in 2021. When my batteries run out then this meter will save the day.

I take your point, but I regard all my kits as toys! :)
