I am 80 and have just decided to get back into sewing for myself, which has always been an utter failure in fitting. I just recently learned about lowering a side dart which I've done successfully, but I have avoided princess styles my entire life simply because I did not know how to lower the curve to fit my body. Now I know.!!!!😂

Good job on the dart video. FYI, the big 4 pattern companies’ fit model in her early 20’s with a B cup size so that’s why most of us need to lower the dart as we age.

I’ve been enjoying binging on your videos over the last couple of weeks. You’re so knowledgeable and you explain things extremely well.
The biggest lesson i’ve learned from you is, it’s unrealistic to expect to be able to whip out a brand new pattern and make a well fitting garment. I need to slow down, expect to spend a day or three adjusting the pattern & making a muslin. Then make a well fitting garment. If i want to do a one day marathon, i need to make a previously adjusted pattern, (or a shapeless sack dress, which always look awful on me!). That has been a hard lesson, even knowing new patterns simply will not fit me, I always hope.

I have a pattern with princess seams I have always wanted to make but never have because I just couldn’t find any information on how to move the bust point on princess seams. I knew how to move a dart level by cutting a rectangle around it and use it all the time but this information on how to do it for a princess seam you have given makes total sense so now I can make my dress. Thank you so much.

If the pattern does not state that it is especially laid out for bust sizes bigger than a "B", (which is the case with most patterns in pattern magazines) then you have to measure the bust point from the middle of the shoulder seam to the extended line of the bust dart and compare it with your highest bust point. In most of the cases you will find, that the side bust darts will be way above the highest point of your bust. I have seen many examples of this on web sites that advertise their patterns with sample garments made by the customers and I have seen this basic mistake so many times. They even make this mistake when offering patterns for sizes from 46 upwards to 54. It just makes no sense, because the larger bust circumferences stem from a large bust, not a large rib cage or a huge back and in these cases, the breasts are more prominent and thus the distance between the shoulder seam and the side bust dart must be much longer. Thank you to Karina for explaining how to do this alteration, it is a routine that every hobby seamstress who's sewing , tops, blouses, jackets and dresses in "plus sizes" must perform on any commercial pattern. I find this extremely annoying, so it's good to have this procedure demonstrated here. Much appreciated. 😊

Hi Karina! Because of different necklines I'm uncertain about how to determine how much the dart needs to be raised or lowered. Do you measure yourself from the neckline down or from the shoulder seam down to the Apex? Do you just hold the pattern piece to yourself and mark where your Apex is? What's the best way to determine how much of an adjustment I need? Thank you so much!

When the design has the shoulder slope close to the center, I measure from the highest point. If it’s super scooped or wide I place the paper on myself and check. The examples I have have close fitting necklines on the center. A quick muslin will also tell you if you are unsure where to measure from. It is a bit of trial and error at first.

    Very helpful, thanks!
Would you be willing to make a video for altering a pattern from arm-princess to shoulder-princess seams?

I know how to do that of course, but that is advanced pattern making and manipulation and unfortunately very few people would be willing to watch that video on the channel. I’ve been active on my channel for over three years now and have confirmed that over and over. I do more basic and general videos like these because they are helpful to a larger group. Thanks for watching.
