If Ninten is by himself, Pollyanna will ALWAYS play, but if another character joins the party, like Lloyd or even Pippi, it changes to Bein’ Friends. Earthbound has a similar tone but I think the contrast between the cutesy music/ visuals and the horror of what's going on (ghosts, zombies, animals going out of control) feels more extreme here? maybe because of how plainly people talk about it. it's very jarring (in a fun way) hearing that cheerful 8 bit music while some npc is talking about the dead coming back to life
I love the overly simplistic visuals of this game. It allows you to use your imagination more. That being said, I also love the visuals in Earthbound, and the latter does have better music if you ask me.
@@iamdamosuzuki_ I thought so too at first concerning the music, but honestly outside of Paula's Theme I found Mother 1's tunes lingering far longer in my head.
One of the things that I really liked about this game was the fact that all of Ninten's stats would go up as he leveled up, including his speed. The power shield was also one of the best PSI techniques. The fact that it would block almost any type of enemy attack was just fantastic! Sadly, Earthbound didn't have these features. It made it impossible for Ness to outspeed enemies like crow, runaway dog, skelpion, and loaded dice despite having the offensive power to defeat them in one hit. Also, the shields would only block either physical attacks or PSI attacks but not both and didn't last for the entire battle :(
In Mother 1 you can’t outspeed enemies in the first place, as there are random encounters that activate every five seconds. And in Earthbound you gain the ability to skip battles with easier enemies, and they even run away from you.
@@thehydrationman5500 It's not about outspeeding before the encounter but during the encounter. Ness was slower than enemies like bats, skelpion, crow, and UFO, enemies that could easily be defeated in one hit but because of their speed would be able to inflict damage, give ailments, dodge attacks, and prolong battles before he could finally hit them. These enemies didn't always run and if not, would drag into an unnecessarily longer battle. It took much longer to build his speed over the course of the game and even then he was slower than the fast enemies, which ensured that he would take damage in the fight. Ninten on the other hand would gain stat boosts continually without any equipment or capsules and surpass all the enemies including the fastest ones. The stat boosts came just from leveling up and guaranteed win against any enemy that could be OHKO'ed regardless of their speed and without taking damage or ailments.
@@cdxs-pf7ju fair point, I also thought the run mechanic in Earthbound was more useless, but even though Ninten gains all of these stats that make the later portion of the game less frustrating, the first few hours are abominable with his lack of good stats.

@@iamdamosuzuki_ two dungeons got changed to be easier in our version. the lower level of magicant was originally much bigger, the dragon was also in a different spot. supposedly the rosemary house was another one, but i've never actually seen a map regarding the japanese version.
With a soundtrack this good, it's a crying shame that the encounter rate is so high, meaning you're constantly hearing the area BGM start from the beginning every time you exit a battle. I don't know why it seemingly took JRPG devs so long to pick up on the notion of suspending the area BGM during a battle and picking up where it left off. FFV is one of the first games I remember using this trick.
Thank you for making this video. It is simply amazing how such a complex and massive game can fit in that little 8 bit cartridge. I have no idea how anyone, in 1989, with no Google, no UA-cam, and no forums could figure everything out in this one. This helped me finally beat this one!
I'm pretty sure in Japan they released this with a guide because DAMN the patience you would need to have for this game without one is insane. I've made it pretty far without a guide at the moment but I doubt anyone else would have such patience.
The gameplay isn't even good compared to its contemporaries but the emotional moments and setting are fantastic. Magicant disappearing is one of my favorite all time moments.
@@ninten1305 Yep , you need therapy after that . And all of that torture could have been avoided if the Starmen aliens didn't abduct George and Maria . So , hows life going ?
Its a shame what happen with the Mother/Earthbound series in America, a cancelled localization, a game which was a failure in sales, and the 3rd isn't was distributed outside of Japan.
The modern-day America aspect really shines in this game. While in EarthBound, you had places like the Lost Underworld which are not realistic in the slightest, in Mother, everywhere except for Magicant seems like a real place.
This and EarthBound's endings just show how much Giegue has suffered from his defeat here. After forcibly hearing the Eight Melodies his adoptive parents whose memories of he repressed being sung to him, on top of trying to do everything in his power to prevent the Apple of Enlightenment's prophecy from coming true, and staying isolated in the Devil's Machine for so long, Giegue has essentially become insane and formless. Giygas is essentially what little remains of Giegue's twisted, corrupted and insane, suffering mind.
It's so infuriating to me that with maybe two exceptions, every indie game that wears "inspired by Earthbound" emblazoned on its sleeve completely fails to understand that these games are a lot more than just silly named enemies and a contemporary setting.
because 99% of the games people say are "inspired/like earthbound" aren't even trying to be anything like earthbound, and people just see any sort of game with wacky characters or strange visuals and go "wow this is earthbound!". even in cases where the developer actually was inspired, like undertale, the games are nothing like earthbound whatsoever. the only time i've seen a game that legitimately is quite like earthbound is jimmy and the pulsating mass, all the other times, OFF, omori, yume nikki (this one is just baffling lol, it's a dialogue-free surreal exploration game), people are usually just talking nonsense and there are no similarities beyond very very vague stuff that hundreds of games even predating MOTHER have they might as well say earthbound is missing the point of... the ultima games because it is older and has some wacky characters and talking animals
Now after watching all the video, the sound of starting the battle will be engraved deep into your brain. And will show now in your nightmares as the most annoying sound ever.

@@thehydrationman5500 True! The first couple of hours were definitely a real grind with those low EXP points. Good thing it pays off in the end :)
@@cdxs-pf7ju it was my mistake not emulating the game with the easy ring
This game has always struck me as eerily melancholic. It really is an old classic, even with all of its flaws. Well, what can I say - I'm waiting for the LP of Mother 3, perhaps the best one in the series! ;)
Eh... *_MOTHER 2_* is Better!
Dorian Scott you have plagued this comment section with your demanding use of Mother. I get you are trying to act big when you are actually tiny, but calm the fuck down. Let people call it whatever they want. THEY KNOW ITS CALLED MOTHER 2. They would just rather call it Earthbound.
@@itsraventm What are you talking about? I call it *_MOTHER_* because I prefer the Japanese name. I am by no means trying to "Act Big", it's personal preferences.

Hope you finished playing my adventure yet. Did you enjoy it?
@@ninten1305 Yeah I enjoyed it Ninten.
This just might be the best Christmas gift ever! Thanks, NintendoComplete!
I remember this game scared the hell out of me, particularly the house going crazy!
I knew this game was special.
The forgotten man was chilling.
^^^^
Who?
Unfortunately he is only a figment of my imagination so I had to make sure he stopped chilling before he sneezed and made me forget why I was on this entire journey in the first place.
Shame Nintendo cancelled this game. It would've been something they could've released here around May/June 1991 to tide NES gamers over until the release of the SNES in August.
chaseman94 they localized it on the wii u
I just bought a physical copy of the English translated Mother 1+2 cartridge just so I can have a physical copy of the game. Maybe one day I'll get an unofficial English translated NES cart
If Nintendo hadn’t cancelled Mother, EarthBound would probably be more popular and not flop in the US, and Mother 3 might’ve even been localized.
@@spiff6293 That may have been the case. Theres also the possibility that it could've had the opposite effect. As much as I love the 1st Mother game, it's fucking hard. There's lot's of grinding, the maps are gigantic and rigorous, you don't see enemies coming, and the goals arent always clearly defined. We'll never really know though.
Prope to Ninten for remembering all those melodies. He had a long journey and e still remembered each melody.
some of the descriptions of Loid's items literally roast him.
A strip joint? That's a reference I never thought I'd see in a NES game.
Pretty sure there was a JP only game on the NES where you could microwave a cat.

Oswald Epic Loquendero in the uk we didn’t even get any of them

Why?

Mario 7? Is that the one I played?
Oh, let's check it out.
Grand Dad.
Fleenstones
I actually played grand dad once, let’s say that it was extremely trippy. Possibly even more trippy than my adventure.
GRAND DAD? FLEEN STONES?
The drum sound in musics is pretty good for a nes game.
I'm more surprised how they managed to fit 7 hours of content on an NES cartridge
longer than resident evil 3 remake
I also like to think of the expanded ending as the equivalent to a TV version extension. It may be edited, but there's more scenes to make up for it.
It's so infuriating to me that with maybe two exceptions, every indie game that wears "inspired by Earthbound" emblazoned on its sleeve completely fails to understand that these games are a lot more than just silly named enemies and a contemporary setting.
because 99% of the games people say are "inspired/like earthbound" aren't even trying to be anything like earthbound, and people just see any sort of game with wacky characters or strange visuals and go "wow this is earthbound!". even in cases where the developer actually was inspired, like undertale, the games are nothing like earthbound whatsoever. the only time i've seen a game that legitimately is quite like earthbound is jimmy and the pulsating mass, all the other times, OFF, omori, yume nikki (this one is just baffling lol, it's a dialogue-free surreal exploration game), people are usually just talking nonsense and there are no similarities beyond very very vague stuff that hundreds of games even predating MOTHER have
they might as well say earthbound is missing the point of... the ultima games because it is older and has some wacky characters and talking animals
Best 6 dollars I spent on wii u eshop
Who would agree
BTW this was my 1st Earthbound game
