I refuse to let people hate on dc talk's contribution to rap music. It opened doors when we used to get put out of churches for rapping or dancing back then. They revolutionized Christian music in multiple genres with their creativity and musical evolution.
I feel so blessed to have grown up listening to music like this that encouraged Christians to do better. To LOVE better. We still have work to do, church.
I love DC Talk. It's really interesting to watch how their music changed with the times. This video was definitely filmed during the MC Hammer craze in the early 90s. I'm glad that they always focused on God in their lyrics. They're a crossover band that didn't forget to take THE CROSS over.
So very true, we need more unity now in 2022 and the world is just falling apart, seems people are more hate filled more than ever but I've only been around since the mid 70's so I know there were even times that were even worse
Man this came out before I graduated highschool....why wasn't I listening to this back then? Toby Mac and Michael Stipe with their young selves. It is still awesome, even now. Love this!!!!!
I love how Toby said "or even swirl" & pointed to himself 😂. Great song & message from an amazingly influential group of young Christians at the time...and the message still rings true!
All three doing what they do SO WELL. It is wondeful to see they all followed through with the obvious call on thier lives..... Kevin sings awesomly then as now, Toby showing his rapping best, Michael's smooth silky voice, even then they desplaying talent which defines them now as solo artists. Good song too.
If a Christian is using the internet, or watching UA-cam, they are doing something worldly. Don't care for the song too much, but God is glorified through all kinds of music, including this.
Toby Mac was the first Christian Gangsta rapper. His hard punching flow is what got me into DC Talk into the first place, and then KMax and Michael T obviously are amazing singers. Back in the day, this wasn't exactly a sissy Christian hip hop group. Toby can still spin rhymes like a lazy Susan.
Classic DC Talk! I loved this group! I wish they wouldn't have split up. I'd love to see a reunion but since Toby Mac is doing so well as a solo artist and Tait is the new frontman for Newsboys, I don't think it's gonna happen. I once saw Tait in concert and when he did "Jesus Freak", I went crazy!!!! He didn't do any of the rapping parts but I was. A guy standing next to me was amazed that I knew all the words.
was friends with their drummer JD (James) Blair, always an awesomely nice guy, back at Lee High School - Huntsville 'The Rocket City' in our Sweet Home Alabama
ahahaahah! What can i say, im diggin the "Me without you" You gotta have a little "Diverce City" like Toby said. He plays around with it you know. He dont like to stay the same always. And that what dc talk did. shifted and tried new things. In fact listen to "lose my soul" from portable sounds. Rap my friend :) Toby literally gave me a diverse ear. Im black, and I pretty much love all Christian music formats. Gospel, Rap, Rock, Contemporary, Worship. :)
WHAAAAAAAT??? Nah bro, nah. i love this song and the old school Dc talk but no doubt Jesus freak was the peek of thier sucess. Grammys, dove awards, billboards, you name it. God blessed um' with it! Gotta respect it bro. Dont gotta "like" it but ya gotta respect it.
YOu guys do realize that your debate over whether DC talk's album is based of of what type of music you listen to right? If you like rap, your obviously going to like this. if you like rock, your going to like Jesus Freak and Supernatrual. Dc talk was awesome from beginning to end, rap or rock, thats a fact.
DC Talk has to do with where the 3 guys met. They met in college (in DC) where they kinda just started chatting one day (TALK). They found out that they all had a passion for music, and eventually also realized that they also had their Christian faith in common as well! -That's what I learned 'bout 'em.
I still have this on VHS. This song still makes a statement as of today even more so. But the thing that always creeps me out the most about this video is the blood coming out of the KKK robe while burning in the fire. Not that I’m a fan of the KKK. It’s just that blood creeps me out. But DC TALK was one of my favorite groups growing up. Saw them LIVE at a Billy Graham crusade.
Josue, I believe that is Jackie Street. He was a great guitarist, also played for other Christian bands. One of my favorites, he passed away a few years ago. R.I.P Jackie.
+Dion Richardson That is true. Many also don't know that Jackie Street played bass on the "Free at Last" album because Otto Price played bass on the Free at Last tour.
Since when? It's not segregation to shoot a black man if he poses a threat. You are very ignorant if you think any man needs to posses a weapon to be considered a threat. Don't use a 90's Christian rap song to justify a false narrative.
@Driftwood145 agreed! This music still has plenty of life left in it. I wish we had music like this today... A new genre will show up sooner or later. :D
Man against man just ain't the plan It's time for God's people to take a stand I mean brother to brother, black to white Stand up to the problem and begin to fight Not against each other, you're wastin' time Yo, I'm referring to a battle of minds Not through debate or writin' on the walls This kinda action is delayin' the cause An eye for an eye, fight fire with fire It's our turn to take it one step higher Gotta live by example, show brotherly love We're together on Earth, we'll be together above So we're () Tearin' down the walls Of segregation Unity abroad New revelation Tearin' down the walls Of segregation Unity abroad In every nation To label churches by color ain't nothin' but wrong We're in the same crew, we're singin' one song If you're in God's army, that makes you my kin Yo, our common bond is the Father of men Of all attributes that we should possess Love is in the Word ahead of all the rest No negotiation to love a certain nation All means all, with no discrimination Boy, we can set a precedence the world can cop Yo, fellow believer, now's the time to stop Racism within our lines Today is the time for this love to shine So we're Judge a man by His heart, not color of skin God views a man from what's held within And, you're called one of His, so you gotta know To be Christ-like is the way that you go And my brothers and sisters in one accord Yo, we're the sheep, and the Shepherd's the Lord So whether black sheep, white sheep, or even swirl God watches over all the sheep of the world So tell me whassup when ya know the command The Word's bold, "Love your fellow man!" And treat Him like you would treat yourself Pull brotherly love off ya dusty shelf
Kevin is still making music and it is awesome! One of my favorites is called "Freak Flag". It's on UA-cam, just search it! He was also the lead singer of Audio Adrenaline for a bit.
@kitechick100 Actually DCTalk was already something that Toby was going by. At first they were dcTalk and the One Way Crew. You can even see it on the first album they did. On the wall in the background of the cover it says "One Way Crew"... They just shortened it to plain old dctalk. Kevin tweeted not too long ago bout him and toby meeting up "Sweet talk- good talk, not quite decent talk, but real talk."
That's pretty much what I was trying to say. I agree we should be apart from the world. I agree that everything that is made needs to be used to glorify God. I also believe this song DOES glorify God. I was responding to lolis883 who said that because DC Talk "sounded" worldly, then they couldn't (or shouldn't) be called Christian. I was pointing out that using the internet is ALSO a worldly thing, but it can be used to glorify God. (My actual opinion of the music shouldn't matter).
Actually RUN-DmC, Kwame, Special Ed and many others rapped in this style and are considered legends. This came out about the time both this rap style was number 1 and 90s boom bap was beginning to surface so it would be consistent with what was being played at the time. But this would be considered by popular opinion rap and not hip hop.
This has definitely dated very badly, but it was awesome for its time. The vocals (aside from the rapping, maybe) and guitar are still great. They should do a more modern take on this, keeping the best bits. Still, brings back memories. :D
@guitargeekette DC Talk has to do with where the 3 guys met. The were in college (in DC) and started chatting one day (TALK). They didn't know each other, but found out they all had music in common, then while continuing to talk, they also realized they had their Christian faith in common, too. -This is what I learned.
Not gonna lie. Did I eat a chili pepper? Cuz I'm sweating like crazy after seeing those toned, glistening, bulging muscles tear down those walls. Whew! 😅
Its funny how the early years of Dc Talk Toby would sing the most words in each song, but in the later years it was mostly Kevin and Michael. Do you guys think so or is it just me?
2024 and walls are still up and we are still having to explain why segregation is bad…. Who knew this song and the song What Have We Become would be so relevant 25-30 years after they were released?
I agree. This came up cause I used to listen to DC Talk when they came out....I was a chrsitain then. I'm now in recovery and wonder.......how did the faith stray so far from this????
I refuse to let people hate on dc talk's contribution to rap music. It opened doors when we used to get put out of churches for rapping or dancing back then. They revolutionized Christian music in multiple genres with their creativity and musical evolution.

PLEASE CHURCH!!! DO MORE FASTER!!! AND FAST! Be the Jesus you all say you are!
I love DC Talk. It's really interesting to watch how their music changed with the times. This video was definitely filmed during the MC Hammer craze in the early 90s. I'm glad that they always focused on God in their lyrics. They're a crossover band that didn't forget to take THE CROSS over.
This is such an OG track - a hard message spoken in righteous anger with love - this is where Tobymac just kills it
Over twenty years and this song is still accurate today as it was back then
Unfortunately
and even today
So very true, we need more unity now in 2022 and the world is just falling apart, seems people are more hate filled more than ever but I've only been around since the mid 70's so I know there were even times that were even worse
More like 30 but yes, it is...unfortunately! It starts with the CHURCH!!!
The reunion should come complete with an all new DC Talk album with their finest material ever.
2020 and we are still trying to break down these walls
We live in a fallen world. I'm not certain they will ever be completely torn down.
2022🙋
No thanks to the liberal mainstream media and talking heads, who poured lighter fluid on the dying embers and lit it again.
2023 and we still need to do it!!!
Man this came out before I graduated highschool....why wasn't I listening to this back then? Toby Mac and Michael Stipe with their young selves. It is still awesome, even now. Love this!!!!!

I always used to love this song yet never knew they had made a video! Wow. :)
Hey 30 year olds, remember this video? This happened in our teen years! Makes me feel old!
I am 32... like what on earth.
Im 26 so i remember Jesus Freak, Free At last and Supernatural LOLOLOL
38 i know what you mean

So true.
@@candacecasey5634 Talaga?
Actually, no. I love Toby, but it all started with Michael Peace and Stephen Wiley. Then there was JC & the Boyz, SFC, PID, then DC Talk.
I didn't think I would like early DC Talk, but it's still pretty good. Thanks for uploading these classic clips
I raised my kids with DC Talk and other Christian bands too but these guys are the best.
primrozie I grew up on dc talk, petra, ETW, newsboys, audio adrenalin etc
Great tribute for MLK day!!!
Totally
You don't know what you're talking about . His lyrics are so subtle in eye on it . Hard core toby shall always be the best ! Amen and good night ! ! !
WOW!! They're SOO YOUNG here!! GOTTA love it!! lol, DC Talk is awesome!
Very underrated group
"Tearing down the walls of segregation, unity abroad, In every nation."
So far ahead of their time, yet nothing has changed in today's world.
Not true . Racism today is way overblown . Progress had been made by late 80’s, and more progress has been made since . Don’t be woke
Classic DC Talk! I loved this group! I wish they wouldn't have split up. Yeah Boy ! ..DC TALK ..comin' strong
awesome awesome awesome, this was my favorite song as a kid!
2:22
My favorite guitar solo of all time!!
Dc talk ! Those were the days
was friends with their drummer JD (James) Blair, always an awesomely nice guy, back at Lee High School - Huntsville 'The Rocket City' in our Sweet Home Alabama
Wow talking about them being young. I really like the song I must say. Awesome meaning behind the song.
+Christopher Quan we need it today more than ever!
Good ole' DCT in effect....man times were different
this track is all kinds of epic- and that's a word i take seriously!! ;)
Epitome of 80's music video. Still like this song even with all the "yeah boy".
ahahaahah! What can i say, im diggin the "Me without you" You gotta have a little "Diverce City" like Toby said. He plays around with it you know. He dont like to stay the same always. Oh god, I’m old.
America needs to hear this message to this day
amen
I love DC Talk so much!
YEP, dctalk was the vibe for CHRISTIAN YOUTHS, i miss this era
The best of rap music! They are great!
brings back so many memories! :3
I'm lovin this.

They literally mixed genres all the time any true Dc Talk fan knows that their style was eclectic.
This is my favourite song ever!!!!!!!!!!
Im 26, But I remember this. I love them so much.
Cool
This deserves 1,234,561,345,896,423,578 views
There's only 7 billion people in the world though.
This deserves 10000000000000000 views
This song could not be more appropriate for 2020

Rawk4Life Jackie was an amazing bassist! Otto does great work and production.
THAT SOLO MAKES THE WHOLE THING. FACE-MELTAGE.
Toby may look much different now, but he stands for the same things. He is a very christian man. Great example!
Nowadays this is a message to respond to all of the fallout after the Ferguson incident.
therealhardrock and now the other stuff thats occurring :/
Since when? It's not segregation to shoot a black man if he poses a threat. You are very ignorant if you think any man needs to posses a weapon to be considered a threat. Don't use a 90's Christian rap song to justify a false narrative.
listening to this song in 2013!! so good
Best song ever !
Ha, such a classic. I love Michael's hair =)
I think to sum up how I feel about the message of this song is in one word. AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i grew up with these guys i owned Nu thang cd
love the guitar solo
I had the cassette
Randomly thought of this song, this video rules
this awesome song even for today
@Driftwood145 agreed! This music still has plenty of life left in it. I wish we had music like this today... A new genre will show up sooner or later. :D
Still a great song with an important message.
My brother Kevin Baynham was the black guy hitting the wall. RIP. Kevin
@Daniel Malone JR. Yeah that's why he was just #1 on billboard and ITunes
1:18 - They even brought in AC Slater to throw down the hammer.
Andarovin the 3rd guy at 1:22 is a Firefighter, I work with him and he's still ripped
©1992 Praise Inc., Dyna Products, Inc., and OctoArts International, Inc.
omg toby looks so diferent and much older now....... and its cool how they put some of martin king jrs sayings in the begining
good song it's kinder catchy
Holy shit I feel old...
Lol!! I getcha!
i know lol
@mattjb84 I couldn't agree more! This song is one of their best ever! And I know that';s saying somethin.
1:06 Tearin' down the walls
Of segregation
Unity abroad
New revelation
Tearin' down the walls
Of segregation
Unity abroad
In every nation
I love how they all share the necklace lol!!
omg the running man
Man against man just ain't the plan
It's time for God's people to take a stand
I mean brother to brother, black to white
Stand up to the problem and begin to fight
Not against each other, you're wastin' time
Yo, I'm referring to a battle of minds
Not through debate or writin' on the walls
This kinda action is delayin' the cause
An eye for an eye, fight fire with fire
It's our turn to take it one step higher
Gotta live by example, show brotherly love
We're together on Earth, we'll be together above
So we're
()
Tearin' down the walls
Of segregation
Unity abroad
New revelation
Tearin' down the walls
Of segregation
Unity abroad
In every nation
To label churches by color ain't nothin' but wrong
We're in the same crew, we're singin' one song
If you're in God's army, that makes you my kin
Yo, our common bond is the Father of men
Of all attributes that we should possess
Love is in the Word ahead of all the rest
No negotiation to love a certain nation
All means all, with no discrimination
Boy, we can set a precedence the world can cop
Yo, fellow believer, now's the time to stop
Racism within our lines
Today is the time for this love to shine
So we're
Judge a man by His heart, not color of skin
God views a man from what's held within
And, you're called one of His, so you gotta know
To be Christ-like is the way that you go
And my brothers and sisters in one accord
Yo, we're the sheep, and the Shepherd's the Lord
So whether black sheep, white sheep, or even swirl
God watches over all the sheep of the world
So tell me whassup when ya know the command
The Word's bold, "Love your fellow man!"
And treat Him like you would treat yourself
Pull brotherly love off ya dusty shelf
@WendiHay819 It came out before I graduated high school too, about 11 years prior lol.
Hard.
kool song
Too bad they had to break up. But Toby is great solo, I love that Michael is the new lead singer of Newsboys and will have not heard much from Kevin.
Kevin is still making music and it is awesome! One of my favorites is called "Freak Flag". It's on UA-cam, just search it! He was also the lead singer of Audio Adrenaline for a bit.
The video is a little corny, But you gotta just listen to the son, And the message it get's across. Tobymac seriously could spit some bars!
Mandalorian Patriot yes indeed!
lt was right for the times.
damn so much hatred in the world...thank god you sing out tear down those hatefull walls....bless you DC talk members

"Decent Christian Talk" is the origin but people started associating the name with the city as well so that's how that got started.
I love this number, so I'm not going to only "like" it, when it's reached the beautiful number of 777
Not gonna lie. Did I eat a chili pepper? Cuz I'm sweating like crazy after seeing those toned, glistening, bulging muscles tear down those walls. Whew! 😅
Toby look so young!!! Hard to believe he's 46 now...
He's also dancing with Toby in a couple of the "crowd" scenes.
LOVE the mickey mouse denim jacket! LOL. Great song though, takes me back...
3:43 Mickey Mouse 🐭 and Minnie Mouse 🐁 jacket 🧥.
me too. I kinda stopped listening to them like i used to after free at last. thats when the change began.
Its funny how the early years of Dc Talk Toby would sing the most words in each song, but in the later years it was mostly Kevin and Michael. Do you guys think so or is it just me?
Metal undiluted metal; horns up
@WendiHay819 Michael Stipe is R.E.M., Michael Tait is the black guy that used to be in DC Talk.
2024 and walls are still up and we are still having to explain why segregation is bad…. Who knew this song and the song What Have We Become would be so relevant 25-30 years after they were released?
I agree. This came up cause I used to listen to DC Talk when they came out....I was a chrsitain then. I'm now in recovery and wonder.......how did the faith stray so far from this????
really cool part at 1:24
the guitar player is Mike E
@Restayvien That was definitely the best response to a comment troll i've ever heard. lol
@avarela96 Toby as in TobyMac? I knew the one doing the rapper's style sounded familiar!
