Hey Dr Langley ! - that was a cool insight to the cartels of villains who've been a thorn in Bruce Wayne's backside for decades !
I'm curious - did you start getting into the minds of Gotham City scumbags as a kid, devouring comics, TV episodes and films? And if you do teach too, do you take special classes or presentations on these antagonists who define Batman?

There are already literal diagnostics in each game. You have to understand that in every game, all of the villains had passed through examination of SOME sort. All of them had ended up in black gate or Arkham at one point and that’s probably what we see when we look at those little character profiles. I love how it also always keeps the jokers info mostly secret.

It’s been theorized as the scarecrow of Batman‘s villains is not actually insane that he’s just pure evil. Basically total antisocial personality disorder. In the past comics he had expressed desires in scaring animals as a kid as a form of intimidation. Early warning signs of a serial killer. The only frightening thing about scarecrow is the fact that he tends to enjoy it or at least fascinated by it. It kind of reminds me a little bit of Freddy Krueger and his psychopathy.

    • @schoolfreak32

I think was also the same before the New 52, as in "Gotham Sirens" she goes to visit her father in prison, telling him that she was motivated to study psychology in order to understand why he was the way he was. I remember one panel because her father might have been made to look like a younger Jack Nicholson, as the Burtonverse (Earth-89!) would have introduced her as Jack Napier's daughter.

People keep bringing up the lick/smack thing and I understand why, so I'll elaborate: Yes, it has been said that Ledger did those odd licks and smacks because of his makeup. That behind-the-scenes tidbit is not what we see revealed on the screen. Regardless of how it originated, Nolan chose to keep those behaviors in the movie. What we see on the screen is someone showing signs of tardive dyskinesia. I know therapists who have been bothered seeing that on screen in this particular movie for a number of reasons, whether out of concern for their own clients or because they don't like seeing anything sympathic in the Joker's depiction. They do not look up behind-the-scenes trivia while immersed in the story as presented. We react to what we see. If we go, "Oh, that's just Ledger," the movie breaks the illusion and isn't doing its job. Nolan made a choice to let those actions become part of their Joker.

Heath was downright amazing at certain aspects of the character and dedicated to the character like no other. However, it remains true that there are aspects of Joker, in his truest form seen in the pages and games, which no actor has brought to screen yet, much less all at once. Each of the big 3 or 4 performances gets some things right that the others don't, but there's still room for the truly perfect portrayal, imo.
Many people, including me, still have a big problem with Ledger, which is that he's often hard to recognize as Joker and not a totally different villain, albeit a great one.

The thing that makes Batman villains especially interesting to me is, that, for the most part, they are all "people", as in they don't necessarily have super powers either (although some for sure do), but are all cunning, intelligent, and sadistic..and for sure mentally scarred and disturbed.
The saddest really is Harvey of course though, as he was a truly good man, pushed too far to his moral limits and he broke of course, seeing both his life and others lives as play things decided by chance, not by your own actions, relieving himself of all consequences as well.
