  • After the successful installation of three Netatmo thermostats, why not try the camera? You can never have too many CCTV cameras.
    It wires in like any other light (or a plug). The bracket was a little tricky for me, but that's roughcast walls for you.
    Any questions fire away.

    Another review said that the video is stored on a mini SD card. Is that in the unit? If a burglar just ripped it off the wall it wouldn't do much good.

      It is. There is the option to push video to online storage like dropbox or other FTP services. Also wouldn't do any good if they wore a mask etc.

      Yes. Replace outside light and leave the switch on. Then you set the light on the camera to auto from the app, when it sees someone it'll turn on the light.

      It's also called Pebbledashing. They put on the cement sand mix, sometimes mixed with a pigment. Then they throw (by hand usually) small stones, gravel, pebbles, and crushed sea shells to give the required finish.

    My netatmo Camera burnt out after 3 years , no light or night vision . Emailed the company in France and they made me pay 55.00 to ship it to them and then gave me a discount on a new one. I wish I never called , I could have just bought something else . Another brand would have been cheaper and just as good . By the way this took Months to resolve !!!!

    • @stevenhaworth9
      @stevenhaworth9 5 років тому

      @@DavidMcLuckie no fault with you just the manufacturer's back box they could have used an actual box instead of that cover if it is on an uneven surface the silicone might not seal it and someone installing it might not have an rcbo they could still be using the old fuse style consumer units.

    • @DavidMcLuckie
      @DavidMcLuckie  5 років тому +2

      True. It's because it's multi-purpose. If you were replacing an already existing outdoor light on a new build, you'd likely have a box already in the wall. Even with old fuse style CU a short to earth will still trip the 5A fuse it should be on. But we could get into the what if's, what if it's wired into a 32A circuit, what if they don't attach the earth. With all things DIY, if the person doing it doesn't feel safe/confident then get someone in. I gobbed on enough sealant I'm confident the water won't get it. Bigger the gob the better the job. :)

    Decent video again Dave
    red and black bering 50s? Try up till...2006 when harmonised cable became mandatory (was introduced in 2004 but folk had 2 years to use up what they had), flex was harmonised in 1962 (?), prior to this you had all manner of colours in flex
    No a dig at you Dave, but Netatmo that is a shocking way to tell customers to terminate cables, outside is meant to be IP44 rated as a minimum (resistant to splashing water aka rain) and that's nowhere near that, shouldn't even be on the market with that box, suitable for indoor yes, outdoor no way, no reflection on you dave, but thats just appalling from netatmo, I've seen better from no name chinese junk off ebay. trading standards should be breathing down their neck about that, they really should. Just asking for someone to end up nuisance tripping of rcbos or blowing fuses everytime it rains. Silicon isn't a panacea for that abortion of a box design, particularly on harled walls. In a garage fine, on an exposed wall....its a joke.
    When I was working as an electrician I would have refused to fit that on the grounds its not fit for purpose, the back box is so badly designed.
    It really should have a back box that fits on the wall with a rubber entry grommet / stuffing gland for the cable entry, and then a lid with a gasket to seal the joint, that or put a small cable entry box on the bottom of the camera. Its clearly been designed for another country's electrical standards, from the video it looks like the USA (even then I have doubts over NEMA / UL compliance) and its video'd in a car port by the looks of things. As said I have serious doubts if that complies with European or UK safety standards and design standards for protection against water ingress.
    Lastly I know everyone uses volt pens aka non contact detectors (even sparkies do it) but all they tell you is that something probably has voltage flowing through it, they don't prove dead, your meant to prove that with a multimeter or a voltage tester to make sure its definetely dead (and even then prove your meter against known live and dead sources first) before getting into things. Though many even in the industry don't do it, I've even seen guys from SSE power distribution using a pair of volts sticks to prove dead...
    Only gripe is the missing earth sleeving, otherwise, good job on your part.

    • @DavidMcLuckie
      @DavidMcLuckie  5 років тому +1

      Interesting. Maybe I should make a video about that. I'll include your suggestions. You're right, I totally forgot the earth sleeving, worse is it's sitting in the electrical toolbox I had out.
      Red and black as late as 2006? I thought we got Euroised a lot earlier, it's always been brown and blue for me. :)
      You know I was in two minds whether to show the whole testing with a meter to prove no mains voltage. I've seen John Ward mention it enough times that you should always test with a meter. But for the DIYer I hoped they'd at least have a test pen and showing live before and then turning off and checking again might be more suited to them. But again you're right and I should have driven the point about making sure dead is dead.

      @@DavidMcLuckie Flex has been blue/brown since the 60s (I was given a sewing machine from the 50s and that was black red and green flex) it was changed due to the risk of someone who was red/green colour blind transposing the live and earth, also to standardise flex colours across Europe.
      Fixed wiring i.e. Twin and Earth wasn't done till 2004 - 2006, on the reasoning that for years it was only trained electricians who'd be working on it. Thats why if you have a blend of old colours and new (which nearly every house in the UK does) your meant to put a sticker on the fusebox saying - "This installation contains wiring colours to 2 versions of BS7671, great care should when working on this installation"
      That comes about as 3 phase and 2 way light switching (top and bottom of stairs for example) used to be - Red Yellow Blue phase aka live colours with a black neutral and now its - Brown Black Grey phase colours with a blue neutral - which means if your not careful you can connect neutral to live or vice versa.
      Usual horse trading. other countries in europe used other colours for fixed wiring and/or designated other purposes so it was the least worst choice, though someone pointed out that purple is generally unused. It also makes identifying 3 phase or 2 way switching cores in less than perfect light pretty hard - brown black and grey not looking much different in low light.
      Heck even electricians use volt pens and as a trade they should know better, its why you still get guys getting electrocuted on the job, as the saying goes you get bold electricians and old electricians but generally not old and bold.
      Complacency kills, I almost met my maker once modifying wiring inside a fusebox that was still energised, had done it 100 times without issue and that one time the back of my hand brushed against something live while the other hand was touching earthed metal, only thing that saved my bacon was the breaker burning out and cutting the power, nurse at A&E (yes I went in case I'd done damage to my heart) was surprised I didn't have any serious electrical burn marks or heart arrythmia (down one arm, across the chest and out the other arm is one of the most likely fatal ways)
      Customer told me I sounded like I was sneezing, that was the sound of my lungs spasming due to AC voltage flowing through me (changes direction 50 times a second) and if it had gone on longer I probably would have suffocated. Scary stuff
      Went into shock the next day though as the realisation of how lucky I was not to be in a pine box set in.
