      And btw I made a different experiment. I made a different version of your master soilmix.
      I replace DG with a different mixture compose of 1 part pumice 1 part kanuma 1/2 part vermiculite 1/2 perlite then mix it together.
      Then I followed your mixture replaced DG with the one I made then added some humic acid & an organic fertilizer composed fish extract/sea weed. Potted 14 plants to really see if its fine. Then I also potted 2 other plants with the mixture I made with pumice and my own version of master soilmix.
      Hoping to see good results.
      My main focus would be to stabilize them and make them root since mosy of the plants I bought are with bare roots.

    perfect video, just what I needed! If the soil takes 3-4 days to dry once fully plumped, is that roughly safe from getting water damage? i may need to switch to granite instead of turface to speed the drying up...

    • @janetac1738
      @janetac1738 4 роки тому +1

      but be careful because my jelly beans are throwing off so many air roots because my soil is actually drying and draining too fast! I couldn't figure out what the hell was wrong and that's what it ended up being. Because it's a single plant in a small small pot that it just wasn't able to absorb enough water fast enough before it all dried up so sometimes our soil can be too much fast draining soil LOL

    • @GrowingSucculentswithLizK
      @GrowingSucculentswithLizK  4 роки тому +6

      Depends on the plant(diva-non diva)/weather/temperature/humidity....My soil mix can dry up really quick or stay moist for a long time. That's why I only water my mature plant around four times a year in the drought.
      A good succulent soil mix should be able to hold water and also repel it from the roots. That way, the plant have access to water when it needs it. It's not the wetness of the soil that causes root rot but the media around the roots holding water all the time. You can have root rot as well even if the soil is completely dry.
      That is the problem with sand(retains water) and the advantage of the coco peat plus decomposed granite(holds the water but keeping it away from the roots).
      I'm not familiar with turface but if I haven't got decomposed granite, I would be using pumice with coco peat instead or whatever media I have. May I suggest you experiment with cheap plants and find out the result yourself since I can't vouch for the outcome since I'm in a different environment from you. Also try to get hold of a seaweed plus compost soil wetter or you can also use agar for watering your plant.
      This is a lot of info to take in I know but all I can say is...be brave little one. If the plant dies then you'll know what you've done wrong. Good luck.

    • @thuyluu3557
      @thuyluu3557 4 роки тому +1

      The pumice is a bit expensive and not easy to buy, do you recommend perlite with coco peaks instead?

    • @GrowingSucculentswithLizK
      @GrowingSucculentswithLizK  4 роки тому

      @@thuyluu3557 I would prefer using pumice over perlite because it's heavier and better in keeping the roots in place. Perlite can easily get wash off and when watering can float to the top and disturb the roots. Maybe try Kanuma instead. Almost same density as pumice but cheaper.

Should I let it dry out before replanting, or how much longer can it stay in the water to make sure it is totally hydrated? Does the Melaco have thinner leaves? They are not very thick. This is my first thin leaf Echeveria. Fact is I am a novice. Salamat po

    Hi Liz. Thank you so much for all these videos. I am learning some things from you and I really appreciate your help.
    I do have a question. Did I understand you to say that you haven't watered that succulent for 7 months? I am wondering if it has been rained on in that time or had some kind of moisture? I live in the Texas Panhandle and it is so dry here. It also gets very hot and very cold. I keep most of my succulents in the house except for some that I take outside to enjoy in the summer but I have to keep them in the shade or they burn under our hot Texas sun. I do have some grow lights in my house because my windows are very tinted. I have tried allowing them to get dry like you did in between watering and I have let some sit in water (I haven't tried this watering mix before.). But, when I do this, the bottom leaves still dry up and fall off and I'm left with a plant that has a smaller main stem at the top and they don't ever seem to get thickened back up. Then, my little plant takes on a very odd look. Is this because they are not getting enough moisture or enough light or both or neither. Also, what part of the world do you live in? I just began watching your videos about 3 weeks ago and I've watched several of them, now, but I haven't heard you mention where you live. 🙂
    Thank you, again, and I will keep watching you and learning from you. 😘

    • @GrowingSucculentswithLizK
      @GrowingSucculentswithLizK  4 роки тому +3

      I grow most of my succulents outside. I'm from Canberra, Australia and we get extreme temperatures. Winter temperature can go down up to -11°Celcius or 12°Fahrenheit and Summer temperature can go as high as 45°Celcius or 113°Fahrenheit. Last year we had drought and hardly rained except during winter. This year we had bush fires and then floods and now been raining on and off since February.
      The 7 month plant lives outside and because where I placed it, hardly gets rained on and gets morning and afternoon sun. Once the bottom leaves dries up, it won't plump up or grow from the bottom but new leaves will form on top and the plant becomes leggy, therefore the 'Bonsaied Look.' The opening plant in the video is grown under normal water when dry condition so it has a lot of leaves but compact.

    • @mariankay6482
      @mariankay6482 4 роки тому +1

      Those fires must have been awful for everyone and every living thing! I'm glad you got some rain. It was much needed and deserved. California, well, the whole west coast and Colorado are having fires and we are getting smoke from them here! Sometimes, it is thick enough that you can see it between my house and the houses across the street! That's a lot of smoke to travel this far and still be so thick! We get colder than you do where I am. We can get below 0°F and we go above 100°F many if not most years. I can't leave any of mine out except for sempervivums. They need some afternoon shade to make it.
      Thank you for the explanation about the 2 plants. That helps. 🙂
      Enjoy your springtime. I am loving our weather this fall. It's still nice and warm during the day but cooler temps at night. The leaves on the trees are changing slowly and it's so pretty!

I'm learning as I go, but I have a couple Haworthia species that were nice and green when given to me and now they're much dryer. Would it be safe to leave them overnight in a huge plate of water? My understanding is that lowland areas have very high humidity. When humidity are high, the less you water since succulents can absorb moisture through the leaves. Pag sobrang tubig, high chance na mag root rot.

    At the end of your video I’m confused you say the purple haze is flowering but it has long stems with no leaves so isn’t it just a leggy plant ..I am new to succulents

      Hi Debbie, there are many different types/genera of succulents. Graptopetalum at the end of this video is just one of them. It's a bit like Roses and Irises. Rose flower has leaves on the stem and Iris don't. Some succulents like Echeveria and Graptopetalum have different flower forms. Echeveria/Rose can have some leaves on the flower stem and Graptopetalum/Iris will only have flowers on a leggy stem but no leaves.
      Since you're new to succulents, I would advise to first find out what type of succulent you have to know how to care and grow them, since different succulents have different needs and flower forms.
      Welcome to the world of succulents and may your journey be a wondrous one. Thanks for watching.

      Where are you from Nenita? Maybe try buying online. Doesn't have to be the same brand or type. Try looking for Seaweed base 'LAWN/GRASS WETTING AGENT.'
