Over the years I've been fortunate enough to drive plenty of BMW vehicles. From a supercharged BMW E36 M3 to the BMW i8, they always have a sense of confidence many other brands can't achieve. Today we drive this BMW E36 328is with a M52 engine swap and Borg Warner single turbo. This five year project on the surface looks very simple but has completely reworked suspension, bushings, and a sticky tire setup all on this ugly duckling of a car! With the turbo sticking out of the hood I knew this was going to be an amazing time. Thanks for watching and new uploads every Tuesday,Thursday, and Saturday!

In the eyes of a soccer mom yes she wouldn't expect a 20+ year old car swoosh past while racing corvettes or supercars of course to the trained eye even the rear tires give it away
We all know it's not a sleeper anymore if you can see any of the modifications done to it sticking out the hood or just visible.
A sleeper appears stock with no hint of modifications. I wouldn’t call this a sleeper personally.

ya, Sleepers are essentially stock looking cars. Gutted interiors, race seats and turbos sticking out of the hood kinda miss the mark in the "sleeper" world.. Sleepers are stock cars until you look under the hood. Still a cool car
It's very hard to get a top mount turbo to fit under the hood for the m5x/s5x engines because the engine is angled 30° towards the exhaust side shock tower (not much room on the exhaust side). But yea this car has a huge cutout in the hood, mine has a lot smaller of a hood cut out

This is awesome, but I can't really justify calling a car with a giant turbo poking out of the hood a "sleeper" lmao
You'd be surprised how easy it is to not see it when you're rolling down the highway tbh
finding a 6 cyl bmw e30, e36 or e46 in a decent non overpriced state is very hard in europe now I dont doubt the US being the same in a few years.
Exactly that, they ask an arm and a leg for a original 6 cyl bmw in my country and there are not many to chose from
We need to keep the e36 m3's away from the purist to not allow them to ruin the market for us

@@nightreapers3425 you also have to think The ones that aren't in purist hands are being turned into drift missiles and you also have to consider let's say you have an E36M3 and someone offers you $30,000 for it it's going to be hard to say no
boosted m52's are soooo good. Properly sized turbos (not gigantic) make the motor just wake up so much.
True but I would shit myself driving it because the block doesn’t really like a lot of boost

@@scroom1908 the made m52 was made with iron and aluminum it just depends on what motor is came in.
I have an e36 328is with a built motor turbonetics 6266 miller war chip with 660cc injectors and their MAF. South bend stage 2 clutch z4 shift kit. LSD, 255/40/17 all 4 corners. 14.5 psi 450 whp
I can't remember the turbo size, but he runs 15psi

Mr. G the rears do not. The front did a wee bit but it was just on that inner fender lip. Smash that flat I’ve had no issues. I don’t remember back spacing. 15mm spacer up front though D force ltw5 wheels.
Drew Bond plus 14.5 for me is my lowest boost setting I have. I’ve essentially have the car built for 20psi but don’t feel like the car needs that much boost though.

I really love how BMW’s feel when you drive them. Either driving around town or blasting down the highway it’s always smooth
I wouldn't call it a sleeper, I'd say more budget friendly but I doubt so, lol
Loads of people on the forums have done similar build for about 6-8k so I'd say it's budget friendly considering regular people spend twice that buying an accord or an odyssey.
Edit: Not with an e46 m3 6 speed tho, that alone costs a lot of money, but the stock zf 5 speeds can handle way more power than this car makes.

@@imnota this isn't just a turbo setup though, the suspension is totally done up and dialed in, which isn't cheap to do
If you can see the turbo through the hood, I wouldn’t necessarily call it a sleeper haha! Cool car though! I love the stripped out racecar look!
M52 was the engine that came in that car.
Eric Christiansen He pulled that engine out of a wrecked 97 328i sedan and built it while he was driving the coupe until he got it all together.
Mismatched wheels (also non BMW) ones, gutted interior, really loud exhaust in combination with the turbo sticking out of the hood and etc... The car is interesting and probably fast as heck but far away from being a sleeper

M52 is from the 328 so it’s not a swap. Also the s52 out of the m3 is just a bored out m52. Both equally as good for boost. Also SMG is the Sequential Manual Gearbox aka an automatic so it’s not what you’re shifting lol.
It is the smg gearbox.
Engine came out of a 328i sedan. I saw it at his shop while he was building it when he first got the coupe.

@UA-cam Isbroken eventual plan is to build a fiberglass "bubble" over the turbo with one of the better hoods he has laying around

Soooo the 328 probably is even more significant to Bmw than the (e36) M3. The 328 line of cars specifically are a multi generation long class wining car for bmw, that has been their sports car base line for almost 100 years now (1936 and on}. Just something you should know; Also the m52 IS out of the 328i e36.. In addition to being the 2.8L used in the E39 and Z3 of that era.

I’ve ridden in this car and it scared me no lie... and I’ve never gotten scared like that I got out of the car shaking a little
😂 He hit it about 1/3 of the way down the on-ramp by Towers. I won’t say how fast we were going for legal reasons. But by the end of the ramp we were doing about 10mph more than I can get out of my m3 there, in 2/3 the distance.

I’ve got a turbo e36 aswell g35-900. Link ecu. And I absolutely love it too. I also did all of my suspension and brakes over the course of 5 years. Solid bushings. Stainless lines. Reinforced everything. Ditched the divorced coil setup for a mono setup. Adjustable upper and lower control arms. I’m just about to get retuned but 22RPD and hopefully push to 550-600whp (made 450@14psi before on a GT3582R)

I've seen these with stock blocks (cams from m3) and stock trans hit almost 800whp. I'm really confused by the mod list and the power levels
from what it sounds like he’s not just running a ton of boost? i’m on the same planet ur on tho people run a 328 with a single turbo and a tune with 15psi boost even and ur already like a 500hp minimum
M52 is the code for late 328 and 323ti engines. Same 2,5 as the older 325 but with a restricted inlet manifold. This means the 328 makes the same hp als a 325 and the 323ti has 170hp instead of 200 like a 325 just because of the inlet manifold

I thought u where going to show me how you set the engine up. Did you do a refresh on the head and block or is it all stock other then gasket and studs?
Turbo sticking out of the hood, stripped out interior, mismatched wheels. Not a sleeper. The sleeper was that EG Civic sedan you did a few years back. The one that was built but still looked completely stock.

E36 ride amazing if you replace all the suspension and diff bushings then add some nice coilovers. With a good tire set up you can get some speed up on the track on a stock motor.

Turbo sticking out of the hood, no interior other than a driver bucket seat, mismatched wheels with huge meat on the back with a massive rake, and a "hater pipe" that sticks out of the hood and spits massive flames. But it still says 328is on the back, and the paint is fading, so its a sleeper 😂😂 idk if i would race that personally. Its a badass car tjo

Let's just start with the fact that sleepers are considered non-performance cars to begin with that were made surprisingly fast. Something like a Buick Ultra with the Supercharged 3800 as one of many examples. A BMW E36 will never be a sleeper. Aside from the very obvious modifications done to this one.
I had the 96 325is and loved it
smg transmission from the e46? no. If it was an SMG then it was converted with the bell housing to a manual. If its super hard to get into gear then somethings screwed up with the clutch or shifter..because its a stock getrag 420g transmission

Only 400hp and a "big giant borg warner turbo sticking out of the hood" doesn't sound like the makings of the "ultimate sleeper" to me.
People are annoying they say "OMG it's not a sleeper since it doesn't appear stock" but NO, a sleeper just is a car you don't expect to be fast, that's all, it doesn't need to look stock or anything like that, it needs to be unassuming.
And as much as y'all like to say it's not a sleeper, and that there's a turbo sticking out of the hood, when you're gonna see this car on the road, you're not gonna notice any of that, all you're gonna see is an e36 with faded paint, mismatched colors and wheels and you're just gonna think "wow, another clapped out e36 that makes less power than a Honda Odyssey", and that's the point of a sleeper.
How do you pass inspection is the first question 👍

Aren't the bmw gearboxes the same gear ratio 1-5 in the e36 and e46 petrols? Unless he's using the 6th gear and/or the feel is WAY better in the e46 box it seems to me like he just spent some unneeded money 🤷♂️ BUT, not my car and he's always now got an expense box to sell to raise some funds if needed 🤷♂️

OBX top mount manifold. Both flanges had to be flattened. Custom made downpipe and wastegate dump tube

328is is the same as an M3 tbh its a much better platform

The US M3 is a stroked 328i, not a real ///M motor. This 328i is fine.
