The look in his eyes is so powerful when he decides not to kill the head coyote. He has to know he's a goner at this point, but he has a responsibility to keep the deaths to a minimum as a man of honor and conduct. And he accepts the responsibility of being the "minimum". This movie doesn't deserve this scene but without it it wouldn't exist so I am grateful for it in the end.

THIS SCENE was the first time I had seen a character in a movie *genuinely* sacrifice their life in such a dramatic way, and THIS SCENE made me understand what literal, physical, self-sacrifice was. And it landed so heavy in my child-mind, this version of the song is my actual favorite, if tied with the original Cash. It seems silly, but it's also amazing to me what becomes important to our developing minds.
I know right? For me as a kid this scene that really hammered home that lesson Ben tried giving "A strong man will stand up for himself, a stronger man will stand up for others" - Ben
Honestly, looking back now it's one of the most emotional scenes in an animated movie ever and It really comes out of nowhere in a movie like this. I then realized how much it stuck with me when I was younger after rewatching.
I’ll never forget watching this as a kid. I could smell my childhood living room and my mom’s 50 cent vanilla candles. Wild how the smallest things of nostalgia can do that
Something I'd like to point out, 4:09 In this scene, Ben decides whether to put Dag down in that moment, and maintains eye contact the entire time. He's deciding for himself. When it is up to Otis to make that same decision, he hesitates as well, but now with emotional weight from the death of his father. He breaks eye contact, unlike Ben, and likely is in brief remembrance of an old story and lesson his father once told him. I'm willing to believe they put this detail intentionally, given how good this scene is shot.
It’s been years, I’ve seen this movie multiple times throughout my lifetime, and I just notice now that Deg is a character that metaphorical represents the devil. The red coat, evil attitude, and very intelligent and tactical way he acts should have probably given it away earlier. His laugh when one of the hens stood up to him still gives me shivers.
I do feel like the creators were trying to get that reaction out of the audience with Dag’s character. He has a very devilish appearance and every time he shows up, he’s bad news.
You're right, even his ears look almost like horns in some shots. As a kid I always thought the red fur was just a way to make him stand out from the other coyotes and establish him as the leader, but this makes so much more sense.
Jesus died and rose again to save you from hell, but you have to accept him as your savior first. I'll be completely honest here: The animation for this movie isn't exactly perfect, and the concept is a little weird... But I'll be damned if I didn't say that this movie had some stellar emotional moments and acting. It's definitely overlooked sometimes, but all in all, it was a pretty great movie.
I loved the uniqueness of it. It reminded me a little bit of Toy Story but this is with animals. So when humans are around they act normal, but when the humans are gone they do their own thing and act human like themselves.
Imagine a scene like this, but in a high budget film with human characters. The coyotes being gang members or something like that. This scene would be highly talked about and praised. This scene would be so nerve wracking and excellent in a real life situation. Like just think about it.
This might have been one of the first times I ever saw a character die on-screen in a movie, the other being Simba's Dad. I didn't cry, but I just remember having this incredibly heavy feeling in my chest. The expressions and voice performances of the characters are absolutely perfect. Proof that even the silliest of kids' movies are capable of handling dark subject matter in a mature and impactful way.
It’s really interesting how in such a brain dead movie, this scene sticks out as genuinely one of the most gripping scenes from an animated film at the time. The song, with the honestly pretty great voice acting, as well as the grit and unwillingness to back down by Ben just makes this scene so well done, and the subtlety of his respect to not hurt him is really emotional. Like, I genuinely don’t understand how this scene is in Barnyard. Like how can this be from a movie like that!???
@@krismotley5216 stuck up people such as the op have probably seen citizen kane due to peer pressure and now believe they have the authority to belittle completely good and fun movies such as this one. It's interesting for sure
Actually there is a reason. The people who made it were literally going off of the "city person" stereotype and just assumed that the audience DIDN'T already know that bulls don't have udders. Thus all bovines in the movie have them even if they're bulls.
Bens response to dags mocking challenge is legendary, seeing him coldly and smoothly lifting the guitar and playing made me want to be like him... This was nickolodeon back in the day, made a fucking BULL my role model, that's good television
I was randomly thinking about this scene at like 4am yesterday I go to my UA-cam recommended section today and I see this at the top....I DIDNT EVEN SAY IT OUT LOUD, these online algorithms scare me
The first 40 seconds of this scene always give me goosebumps. I wasnt old enough to fully understand it when I used to watch Barnyard as a kid but I definitely understand the meaning now and its pretty harsh on your feelings. Hits you in the gut.
This scene is crazy, like how is this in such a silly movie like Barnyard? Not only are the storyline, mood, emotions and voice acting amazing, but even the cinematography and camera work are too
I watched this movie so much when I was a kid, and I thought it was the best movie ever made. Now that I’ve watched it again as an adult, I ask myself why younger me thought this movie was so good. At least I wasn’t wrong about this moment. Rest In Peace Ben, you won’t be forgotten.
Growing up is understanding that it was necessary for Ben to die. OTHERWISE Otis would never truly of known what Ben meant “a stong man stands up for himself, a stronger man stand up for others” RIP Ben
I'm a grown man and not ashamed to admit this scene still gets to me... and the funeral scene where Otis is reminiscing. .. Cause I've been there. these kid movies teach so much life value that goes over the head, sadly.
The Way Dag says "You know me, Lady Killer," to Ben, with that Sadistic look on his face. It made me realize that there one of three possible meanings to that: One: Dag killed Ben's wife. Two: He killed Otis's birth mother. Three: Both 1 and 2. Honestly, I think the point of that line Dag said to get under Ben's skin, meant that somewhere in the past. Dag killed a female cow Ben was close to. you tell me what you think is the most likely answer.
Watching this scene now as a 22 year old and as not a kid 2006 in a movie theater you look at Ben’s death from a different perspective. It’s emotional not because Otis could’ve helped him. It’s emotional because Ben is a man men aspire to be. A man who is willing to die for others (that stronger man who stands up for others) and be that person everyone looks up to is who Ben was. That is why his death even to this day hits hard because he is like a father figure we all want in our lives. Since that got taken away in this scene it shows that Ben’s death usurps Mufasa’s by a long shot. It shows that you can never take what you have for granted.
This was one of the most interesting animated fight scenes. What was bad wasn't that the coyotes were trying to get something to eat, it was the evil, sadistic way in which they hunted their innocent prey that made them undeserving of it.
Nuka Corgi I always thought he was a fox, but if you look it up, he's a fucking coyote. 😂😂 and if you listen, they howl like coyotes, too. and his mates also look like coyotes except that fucker of a leader.
I still cry to this 😭 never forget a legend like Ben. My mom used to talk about how when I was younger I would cry everytime and rewatch that movie everyday. To this day I still see why I did that. RIP Ben ✊🏼 my first moral role model
Me: hey can we not listen to this song? It brings back bad memories of losing a loved one Them: oh yeah shit sorry we can skip this one I guess... Me on the inside: Ben......

My parents laughed when he pulled out the guitar and started singing Johnny Cash. Didn’t get it before but I do now. Ben has no business being as badass as he is
There was a never a more inspiring movie scene to see as a kid. I miss the days when entertainment wasn’t just entertainment, but actually taught kids life lessons. I think about this movie scene on a weekly basis and haven’t seen it in almost a decade. This is the kind of movie scene that inspired younger me to not hesitate to put your life on the line to save others, and I had dreams and promised God I’d join the United States military. Unfortunately over the years I’ve fallen short as I’ve payed closer attention to politics. Our military no longer fights for the American people but instead the American government in most cases. God bless the fallen heroes. May their sacrifices be forever remembered for the greatness they fought for. America as of now is on the quick decline and it’ll be a hellhole in no time. Tell your father you love him. Our world needs strong men like Ben.
The comment section in a nutshell: *20% inspirational quotes from Ben* *50% making jokes about how powerful Ben was* *30% complaining about how movies aren’t this good anymore*
How do you make a film even better? Add a cow playing guitar. How does it get better you ask? You have the cow beat up some coyotes. Even better yet... Have the cow beat up the coyotes while playing guitar. Now that's oscsr worthy right there
Seeing this when I've grown up puts Dag in a whole new context. This scene is one giant dark innuendo, that could only be done in animation. If this movie were made live-action it would be R-rated.
@@cannonballcowboy8610 A group of scumbags breaking into a house full of "hens" to have their way with them. You make this live-action and replace the animals with people and this is a frappe analogy (remove the "f" and second "p").

Even garbage or bad movies can have a great moment or two. This is the perfect example.

Because the people who made this were probably city slickers.
Welcome to back at the barnyard where everyone has tits
Actually there is a reason. The people who made it were literally going off of the "city person" stereotype and just assumed that the audience DIDN'T already know that bulls don't have udders. Thus all bovines in the movie have them even if they're bulls.

The Way Dag says "You know me, Lady Killer," to Ben, with that Sadistic look on his face.
It made me realize that there one of three possible meanings to that:
One: Dag killed Ben's wife.
Two: He killed Otis's birth mother.
Three: Both 1 and 2.
Honestly, I think the point of that line Dag said to get under Ben's skin, meant that somewhere in the past. Dag killed a female cow Ben was close to.
