i m a 3 stripes brown belt, and when i roll i m never obsessed by submit the other guy, even if BJJ does not have striking, in my mind i always roll thinking we can strike each other , try to have a very martial art mindset more than a competition mindset, i want to be lethal (at my level) in the position, i want to feel i m controlling my sparring partner and if i want i can kill him with ground and pound, and i try to train as much as i can the escapes to save my ass, expecially when i roll with white or blue belts i give them the mount, the 100 kilos, i give them my back to train my escapes, very very important considering that i m also an over 50 man i can find lot of young guns giving me hard times

Some people find a thing they love and just run with it. I rolled with a brown belt (I was a blue belt at the time) who similarly hit me with an armbar from absolutely everywhere. It's really cool to see someone specialize and find expertise in an area.

@@TylerSpangler Thats my problem with Kimuras currently. I see them in every position. Close guard? If I just sit up a little.. bam Kimura baby!

Great content Tyler! 50 yr old Brown belt here. My style is very similar to Thao, though he looks like he has really good balance too. For sure things would have gone differently if you attack the legs. I also have mega grip strength as an old guy (6ft 200 pounds) but lately I've been attacking legs more simply bc I'm old and I can haha this is one of my favorite channels and I didnt realize that I hadnt subscribed even though I look at this site weekly. Good luck and thanks for the awesome content! *BTW I'd love to see you attack legs more in the gi against lower belts like purple, not finishing the leg locks but just grabbing it so I can see how you do it since you'd probably do it at will.

Our gym has an unwritten "no oil change" rule in that because we have a lot of mma fighters, if you change someone's oil...you might get elbowed in the face. I'd rather just be fishhooked. You're also right about not knowing how hard to roll with an instructor at his own gym. It's a bad look to sub him in front of his own students, so I just defend and release subs (knowing in my head that I had it). However, and I've confirmed this with other high belt gym travelers, everytime I go to an open mat or visit another gym...the instructor puts me with 3 or 4 of his best students, then wants to do the last roll with me when he's fresh. (this is my wife's youtube acct, too lazy to change). One time I visited a very Brazilian gym and one guy actually whispered "watch your back, you have a target on it"...and this was during the pre class line up.

Summary of the video series we have here:
If Tyler punks everyone at a gym he gets to wear the blackbelt until the next video.
If he does not embarrass everyone at a gym his belt is confiscated by himself until the next video.

I was just talking to a new blue belt about feeling like you don’t deserve the belt you have and how much worse that must be for black belts. The skill ceiling for black belts is so damn high, must get hard to feel deserving of that belt.

Just go and have a good time. I think there is a stigma with visiting other gyms, but most gyms are just happy to have new people.
I’ll admit that they may give me more praise since I’m a black belt, but even when I was a lower belt they were happy to have me. Just be willing to work!
Edit: I also think it goes a long way to offer to pay the drop in fee, even if they say it’s free. I like to do this just so they can see that I’m willing to be like other members

    • @stangdude5593
