- Collecting and investing in Pokemon cards can be easy, or it can be hard (and VERY expensive). In this video, I explore something I've learned as a business owner and entrepreneur that I've now incorporated into my collection, and it's already saved me loads of money, and perhaps it can help you, too.

Of course, it's up to you to make the right decisions as far as what you spend your money on. This is not investment advice, but rather just an open look at how I'm approaching my new collection and the hobby in general, so that you can see how one guy is doing it, and make smarter, more calculated decisions moving forward.

Same here. I stared collecting again back in 2017 when they had the 20th anniversary xy evolutions and generations set. Wish I would have bought more. Starting collecting again this year and will def not make the same mistake and actually get more this time around

My collection isn't about money or even an end goal(I don't want to have an end goal i want to keep collecting cos I love doing it) it's about passion and nostalgia. I love opening packs because if I narrow my self down to only caring about chase cards or gold cards then I miss the chance to appreciate the artworks on all the cards including commons.
Yeah my middle ground for that is getting a handful of packs, and if I don't pull the card I specifically want by then, then instead of spending loads more on even more packs in the hopes I get it, I just buy it separate. That way I get to pull a bunch of commons/uncommons from the set and enjoy the mystery of opening the packs but don't open way more than I should lol and if I pull other super cool rares from the set along the way then it's even more exciting
Every time I find myself wanting to go crazy and buy lots of packs, I come back and watch this.
My collection is not about the money it’s about the nostalgia. I grew up with the base set but fell out of the card collection and more into the games. With all these awesome moderne sets comming out I love to grab a booster box and get as many card out of a set as I can doing pack battles with my wife. I love holding on to one of each pack art from each set we open and I love the chase for all the new shines!
I don't really know what my current goal for a collection is, but I know I'll never own sealed product. The mystery of what is inside will eat me alive.

I love sealed product. This mystery is whats so special for me. Maybe because I was frustrated after opening too many times. When its sealed its like a treasure of possibilties 😄
Same here pulled 2 great cards this week and all my buddies are stashing boxes away
The beauty of sealed products are, you can have two packs, one with junk cards in it, one with the most valuable card in it (let’s say PSA 10 base set charizard,) and BOTH packs have the same exact value, because they’re sealed. I’ve just begun collecting again and I haven’t opened a single pack yet. I figured over time it will all be worth more than what I paid for it for sure. And I like sealed stuff personally.
I know this is an older video, but your opening really made me feel good about my collecting as I just started again this weekend. I'm starting an ArtistDex instead of trying to get everything (though that would be cool too). So I plan on purchasing promotional boxes instead of loose packs to get special cards that I know I don't have and then having fun with what comes in the box itself. I have 89 Illustrators in my current binder and my first major focus has been Saya Tsuruta as I love her style and its been so fun just hunting for her art in bulk bins at shops and looking forward to the next pull.

I'm collecting every single squirtle card printed. So far I've got about 32 of them. My prize card is a psa 10 1st edition squirtle from team rocket.

What he's saying is right & of course it feels *great* when you've saved up/finally found & managed to procure that certain card/item.
_But.._
There's just *nothing* like that feeling you get when *pulling* that special card. Be it the chase card from a new set; a surprise that you haven't seen before but you love the look of; a playable/tactical monster, etc. It's a feeling that I just wouldn't trade for the safety of _only_ buying singles.
That feeling takes me back to being 12, ripping base set & team rocket & the excitement & pure joy of when I pulled something interesting.

Tangela has always been my favorite pokemon, I want to collect every single tangela card including promos and I agree with all of your points! I've been collecting for years now, and just recently I've decided to niche down, and it makes it that much more exciting getting the cards I want/need for my collection. Thank you for all you do!
"Riches in the niches" is a great way to collect! There are a lot of collectors that only really collect based off value (nothing wrong with that), but I feel more comfortable just buying the stuff I like. A niche I got into is collecting the Misprint No Symbol version of Flareon from Jungle. I want to eventually have binders full of just that one card.
Dude I love it! You’ll corner the market the more you add to it, but more importantly, that’s almost a never ending journey that can keep bringing you joy over and over again!

My son and I started collecting and playing a year ago. You’ve now inspired us on how we collect and we are now most of the way through our collection of Paldea Evolved. We’ve done well starting the collection and now we are looking forward to the next step of picking up the single cards we don’t have. Finding the places to go here in London to pick them up and starting to become apart of the community you endorse so well.
I’ve also recently decided that Lucario is my favourite Pokemon and so I may start getting hold of each of those.

In my opinion I'd rather be surprised what I get from a pack rather than buying a guaranteed card off Ebay.
Really even if I dont make profit I still love it because its way more fun being surprised in what you get.
I started collecting again and while I enjoy opening packs, I also know it's pretty impossible to complete a master set for any of the new sets just from buying booster boxes. I thought about what would give me some satisfactions to collect on the side, and decided to start collecting all the cards by the illustrators Tomokazu Komiya and Asako Ito. That way at least my binder feels like a mini art exhibit.

However, I also know that it's important to save money,, so I want to ask if it's worth buying single cards for say... $250. And should I stop buying booster packs?

I've always kind of had this idea of collecting certain cards, especially the venusaur evolution cards, but I also find a ton of joy in opening the packs and the suspense that comes with it
I'm still new to collecting, so I have yet to find my niche. But I think I am starting to figure it out. It brings me joy when I find vintage cards in a mystery pack, and give them a place where they can stand the test of time for just a bit longer. Pulling cards from the Luxray, Floatzel, Tinkaton, Banette and Lopunny lines also make me happy, since they are some of my favorite pokemons. And I also enjoy cards with artwork I find beautiful. So, my niche is still very broad.
I don't watch many pokemon channels, but just from watching a few videos. You're going to blow up soon. Trust me. The edits, the knowledge, the product, persona. You have the whole package. I gave you a sub just as a reminder for when you blow up I was here under 10k haha. Keep up the good work.

I love collecting the old cards from specifically 4 card sets: Fossil, Team Rocket, and Gym challenge or Heroes. English and Japanese doesn't matter! That's my Niche :)
Just came back to Pokemon 2 months ago and I'm amazed at how it's taken off. Being able to have this much fun now, being an adult is awesome. I am collecting mainly full art cards with GX thrown in. The art work and the foils really stand out, Pokemon has really come a long way.

buy shadowless now before they go way up! they are FAR more rare than even the 1st eds, but for some reason they haven't increased dramatically in value. not sure why, but get those babies and hang on tight... they are just stating to inch up...
I collect a bit of everything, but my main focus these days are stamped worlds promo cards. Trying to complete one of every level from each year.
I was brought back into the hobby by 151 and have been thrilled with the new alt Arts and illustration rares introduced to the TCG in the last handful of years. My ultimate goal is to collect all of the available alt arts/illustration rares of the original Kanto Pokemon. Lots of fun!
I didn’t grow up with Pokémon, I grew up with MTG. Pokémon didn’t exist until I was 18. A co-worker of mine really loves Pokémon, so I decided if someone else loves it then it must be pretty good. I just purchased a couple boxes of brilliant stars. I pulled an Arceus Vstar on pack 3 of my first booster box. It was amazing! I think Pokémon is a great game that has some beautiful art work. It’s a fun new hobby.
I am collecting Base Set, Jungle and Fossil right now. The collections that i couldnt as a kid because of the money, not knowing anybody in the hobby, and no internet. Really thrilled :). Gretings from Spain.

I love collecting, completing, or even mastering the sets that dont get as much love, but overall not letting the crowd control what i like. My most recent complete set and very close to mastering is SV base, the value isnt as high as other sets, but reaching the goal of completion is much more rewarding to me than buying a single slabbed card, like a moonbreon, which costs more than the entire SV master set combined. Buying a booster or 2 and an etb then rounding up the rest for my binder is allot funner to me. Thats what i love most about this hobby, is there's so many ways to do it

Just starting my collection. Almost complete the Champion's Path complete set. Starting to get a few full art trainers.
I like weird promo sets like mcdonald's cards, and also like the very limited amount of Girafarig cards out there. I'm working on a complete unlimited base set now and don't have too much more to go. I'll likely complete Jungle and Fossil sometime soon too.
Now that i have money, i really just want all of those AR arceus cards and basically anything diamond and pearl era.
My ultimate goal is to get to a place where i can buy Shining Gyarados and not feel bad😭
I'm a simple man. I started a triple and single packs promo cards collection from the swsh era. All the illustrations are so beautiful and it's quite inexpensive to complete.
I already know what I'm in it for. Good pulls and code cards. I'll put my codes online for extra value and have fun making decks, and also have some wicked pulls in my content (hopefully)

Just started again recently and collecting every Rainbow Rare ever printed, about 310 of them, and it’s been mad fun!
I'm currently thinking about buying the entire Fossil set to have some of that nostalgia back. I hope the little kiddo I gave my near complete Base, Jungle, and Fossil to has been treating it like gold and didn't sell it during this recent spike in Pokémon craze.
I'm a software engineer but I always use investing as a second source of income whether it be stocks or whatever, but super glad to add my love of Pokemon to the mix as well and all these points are so great! Subscribed :)

I came across this video late as I’m new to the channel, but my collection is building a complete Pokédex of every single Pokémon. My goal is to try to get the highest rarity I can for each Pokémon. I have a few alt arts in there that I absolutely love
i lost my collection as a kid from when pokemon first started. though im not going around buying base set packs because i dont have the money but i love the feeling of collecting and building it to one day pass it down to my kids and let them decide to liquidate it or pass them down another generation.
I want to complete the first 6 sets. So.. base, base 2, jungle, fossil, rocket and the black star promos. I need a couple base 2’s by now, and.. the 2 most expensive black star promo cards 😅
Currently trying to get all the full art trainer cards. Slowing making may way through sword and shield sets then eventually I’ll start going for others.

Love that Focus, I had to evolve my focus multiple times to know what isn't going to cost me alot and still enjoy the hobby.
I play constructed magic the the gathering. But I am a real fan of Snorlax and I am collecting its cards. It’s much easier to see a new collection and focus only on the card that I want it. The other cards are cool, but my interest, energy, and focus go only in the Snorlax that I want it. Nice one and congratulations on your work!

Just to share to the world. Im really trying to finish rebel clash, and I kinda need a lot of cards but im trying to go for the secret rare perrserker. Because Perrserker is one of my favourite cards.

I've actually had some insane luck with rebel clash recently, I never liked the set when it initially dropped but now that I've had a little bit of time I've grown to appreciate it
I'm trying to collect every Aerodactyl card and all of the primes from HGSS in PSA 8-10 (10 is obviously ideal but the pops on some of the cards are so low)
When you talked about your son spending $20 on the cards he wants online rather than packs… that really hit home for me. Because I feel the same way anymore. Especially since packs are much, much harder to get

I get your point. I'm actually collecting only Gen 1 pokemon cards and this is enough for me. I grew up with Pokemon Blue and I wouldn't want to collect anything else. For now, I just want the cards that I find cool and affordable.
My brother and I are deciding what our first master collection should be we might wait until scarlet and violet to decide
I try to focus on Eeveelutions. I'm highly aware that certain eeveelution cards I'll either never get (be it price or rarity), but what I get I love. I have a small general collection too, but I focus on eeveelution.
I purely collect one specific mon family from baby to final evolution in English language only.
The downside to this is due to the card not being a sort after card back in the vintage sets it means that a lot of the older reverse holos are almost impossible to find as they were common/uncommon reverse holos.
So I actually just started treating pokemon collecting more seriously, and right now im trying to collect every Cinderace card. So, to give me a little boost, I've ordered about 6 cards that I don't have (I have about the same amount already) and I'm planning on ordering the rainbow rare cinderace very soon! After that, I want to focus on the rest of the Cinderace line as well as on my fav legendary Kyogre. Then from there, I'll probably focus on Darkrai, the Mudkip line, Zoroark, and any other pokemon I happen to start liking. I've found it WAY more cost effective to do it like this than just open card packs and hope you get something you like.
Switching from buying packs to actually having a goal was the best decision I made. On my way to complete base set unlimited, jungle & fossil sets
INSANE: this is literally my goal as well. I just bought my first psa 10 art set today actually. I was having such a hard time figuring out what to collect and my collection was all over the place. This is the move

Gengars, I wish I could get my hands on some of the older ones like from fossil and Sabrina’s gengar is probably the sweetest looking holo. Unfortunately I only have a Gengar V in my collection but hopefully one day I can get more in hopes to eventually get all of them. Love the vids 👍🏻👍🏻
My niche is to collect 1 card of every Pokémon that is holo, reverse holo, or better (GX, EX, V). I determined it was the most affordable and straightforward way to “catch em all”

My idea was to collect all of the Gyarados since he is my favorite pokemon. And recently I've been buying cards off a Amazon and such and once in a while i would buy newer pokemon booster packs. Doing this u can save alot of money and have that spark of fun.

I was pretty lucky as a kid and got most of the original pokemon cards. So im pretty happy with just that alone. Now days Im just opening packs for the fun of it. I'm a big fan of Eevee & the Eeveelutions, Vulpix & Ninetales, and Mimikyu, so I go around hobby shops and online collecting those and buying from new sets. I also like collecting Pokemon cards for the art; there are certain artists I really love!
I’m working on a Pokédex card collection. Any set, any card type. It makes pack opening more exciting because even the commons are pulls for me if I don’t have it yet in my binder.
My niche is play testing, balancing, and pimping out decks for the expanded format.
I’m collecting sets- I’m keeping binders which have the sets organized by number, starting with Fusion Strike and Brilliant Stars as they are accessible at the moment. Extras from the booster boxes I get go into organized boxes also organized by numbers. Extra rares go to my gf🙂

I collect every single English released supporter card that is a rare holo, rare reverse holo, full art, or secret rare. Currently, that is from 2000's Team Rocket release with card 15/82 called "Here Comes Team Rocket!" up through 2022's Brilliant Stars set with card TG28/TG30 called "Single Strike Style Mustard."

We pulled the Poke Kid in English. It looks sweet, but our favorites are the Charizard pulls which are currently being graded. For collection sealed collections are the best, however at this time we open everything we get so we can see what is inside.
Never really had a goal when i started rebuying Pokémon cards. It was always buying for the enjoyment of battling others, but honestly after watching this i might actually start a eeveelution collection. I love eevee and all it’s various forms .

I have been collecting since 1998. I grew up with Pokemon and it's been my childhood. I have most of all my pack art saved, deck boxes, etc. I also have complete full sets of most if not all wotc era cards. I have been collecting for the love of Pokemon. I'm not in it for the value nor am I am ever selling my investments/ positions. Pokemon has been my escape from reality. I will admit that I am enjoying all these newer sets. I will say that I enjoyed XY evolutions the most and have the master set.
Seeing this video made me set a goal for yugioh cards. I'm going to get all of the main monsters belonging to the protagonists like Yugi, Jaden, and Yusei. That'll be my niche.
That's some great advice. For some reason I love collecting dragon Pokemon like Latios, Rayquaza, etc. I remember specifically Latios popping in my gameboy at the airport one time and that was a highlight for my childhood for years to come.
