What a troll it would've been if all binders were stacked with energies. First collection was definitely the best. I just love seeing all the different artworks for 1 pokemon in 1 place.
I can totally explain the Bad Binder Behavior on the last collection. I have a very similar looking set of binders myself. These were not "collections." Back when these cards came out, with the exception of a very few cards that were just the coolest looking (Holo Charizard) we didn't buy them to collect. We didn't really consider the down the line value. Honestly, most people that played Pokemon TCG when it first came to the US didn't think Pokemon would still be "a thing" in 20 years. We bought them to play the game. It was common practice to set up your binder with up to 4 copies of any card you thought you might want in your deck in each slot. You could just pull that slot and then put them in your deck. Multiple slots of each pokemon in the sleeves likely means it was a family that was using these cards. It was so much easier to flip through a couple binders to figure out the cards you wanted to use instead of rifling through a big box. Holos were not typically included because they are a pain to shuffle. OK, there was trading and collecting going on, but you had to consider if the card you were trading for was to put in a book and never use, or if it was to make your deck better. TL;DR anytime you see binders of cards sorted by type, then card name, with energy, that was a deck building binder, and not a collection binder. You need a different mindset when looking at those cards. I'm willing to bet that person has another binder they didn't include that has one copy of every card that ever crossed their hands, sorted in Pokedex order. That is the person's "collection."
As he was going through that binder I was just thinking, "man, that's exactly how I had my binder set up as a kid." I had no concept of card worth, I just traded cool looking cards for cool looking cards and stuffed my binders w/ everything I had. Albeit, my coolest shiny cards were in their own binders. I didn't even know about double sleeving until I started playing MTG
Same! This was exactly how my binder in the 90s/00s was set up too. Even down to the white office binder that I used and put a bunch of stickers of the gym badges and pikachu on to make it more Pokemon related
ngl most people I knew who traded them at school didn't even have binders, they would bring their entire collection to school held together by an elastic band
those old school energys once u add them all together have a pretty decent value. i know there are people out there that like to use those. they could easily sell for .50 a piece. those older first edition cards have some pretty decent value. i think it was worth it
