Tesla’s Chief Designer On The Cybertruck And Working With Elon Musk

- Опубліковано 7 лют 2025
- Franz von Holzhausen has been Tesla's chief designer since 2008. CNBC got a rare interview with him at the Peterson Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, which recently opened a new Tesla exhibit. He was a lead designer on the Tesla Model S, Model 3, Model X and Model Y as well as the Cybertruck, Tesla Semi truck and the second generation Roadster. Prior to Tesla, he worked in design at Mazda, General Motors, and Volkswagen. He speaks to CNBC about what it is like to have Elon Musk as a boss, what happened with the glass shattering windows at the Cybertruck unveil, and what is next for auto design.

Tesla’s Chief Designer On The Cybertruck And Working With Elon Musk
This is another thing about tesla - their product presentations are not done by pre recorded adverts produced by an advertising agency making a video - instead you get the actual designers and engineers like Franz up on stage with the CEO doing product releases with live audiences and answering questions etc. It seems very open and honest it's a good way to do things and gives recognition and credit to the engineers and other people making the products.
Always feels more like an event than a presentation.
You see people next to the product.
I’m not a Musk, Tesla fanboy per se, but I appreciate any competition and innovation to established norms.
Good
Aren't everyone doing that? I do believe Steve Jobs basically fathered this for instance...Apple, MS and just about everyone else are doing similar things.
@@mickeynygaard Some of them do - apple was well known for it. It's good if your a market leader with a very compelling product. Tesla put everything into the product and certainly are the market leader.
Have you heard of a little company called apple? Lol
So good to see a mainstream interview with Franz. Tesla is so much more than Elon.
Why do you think in first place that Tesla is Elon? Serious question as a shareholder and a long-time Tesla fan, and as a Tesla owner.
Elon has always given Franz absolutely all the credit for designs in every single interview, podcast and there's gigaton of interviews and news articles also. As far as I see from all possible media (which is not second hand trash media), Elon has always, ALWAYS given credit for Tesla teams and inviduals where credit is due.
I love how everyone is suddenly anti Elon musk after the twitter purchase but were all riding his massive bandwagon before that. Truly shows how people can only think about one thing at a time
@@sundflux I agree, so I should rephrase that the "perception" is Tesla is Elon. pretty much all the big interviews or presentations we see about tesla comes from Elon. All I was trying to say was, it's good to see a "mainstream" interview with someone other than Elon.
They even used SpaceX tech in the new roadster.
You don't see space companies collaborating with car companies often.
@@KrisL83 to whom? don't follow leftist shitmedia. my perception is 98% positive. same for the people around me (intelligent investors, engineers and business people). escape the matrix
CNBC posting a good video for once?? Wow.
Good interview
I’m impressed
Where was living when Fox News trashed him 24/7.?
They have to a couple times a year to prevent a deserved mass exodus
They should be attacking MUSK! for bringing free speech to twitter!
I think a lot of their videos on different topics are pretty well done and informative. most of them are so dry you can't even find a political angle. this honestly felt more like a fluff piece than most
somebody will probably get fired for this interview
There is something new that's coming. He clearly said, "my best design is the one that's coming. I can't talk about it"
He's probably referring to the 25k model they are working on I think Elon said that would be announced next year at some point
He’s said once in a podcast, he has an idea of what a vehicle would look like when the industry goes full autonomy and removes the driver.
Definitely the RoboTaxi.
Yeah, right... and my biggest flaw is that I'm perfectionist...
@@Techblaze21654 my guess is this new design, the more affordable Tesla, rolls out of the Pepsi semi at Thursdays unveiling. Might take away from Pepsi, but that’s my guess. Model ?
Not often that i realy like a CNBC video - especialy on Tesla... Realy nice. Open, unbiased, friendly, not offensive, no agenda... putting the humanity of the interviewee in the center. Great, thanks a lot. More like this, please.
I was waiting for the hits on Trump, opps I mean Musk, where are they!
She really try hard at the first 2 questions to see if there is issue with Elon Mask as managing Tesla. Too direct for beginning of interview
I agree completely. No agenda. Very surprising. Does this mean that CNBC is changing? We'll see
@@Fighter4Street Why is Elon Musk and Trump equated so often? To me they're radically different people. And I have no idea what Trump really believes (except self-preservation) where as Elon's beliefs are pretty clear. What attributes do they share?
@@Muskar2 The attributes are 95% of the media are out to get both of them and I read 98% negative hit pieces on them. A political party is going after both of them like no one else. Just go to CNN and you will see ever article is a hit piece against Musk. Remember, they could easily say that Musk is going to change twitter and allow everyone a voice and how Elon Musk has turned every company he purchased/started to gold. Instead they are so negative at him to the point I keep hearing from people that Trump never had a successful business, Elon Musk only purchased businesses from other people. I mean its just delusional how you can believe any of these things when both are billionares and have successful businesses. MUSK & TRMP = enemy #1 to a certain political party.
Whoa, quality content from CNBC? I’m here for this haha. What a great interview with Franz. Seems like a great person to be around!
It's hard to not make quality content when you're CNBC in a non political space and here's why: 1) They have enough influence so they can interview anyone, just ask and you'll get an interview with the top guys at Tesla, unlike smaller outlets. 2) They have enough money for good equipment such as cameras, mics, video editors, etc. to put together a high production value video, and 3) They have enough money to do market research and figure out what people actually wanna hear. So your end result is something people want to se that not only gets made, but gets made well. When there's any hint of politics though, all journalistic integrity goes out the window and CNBC becomes about as bad if not worse than CNN or Fox.
It’s a low key dig at Elon. The only reason they bothered to even make this interview
@@justingolden21 the running joke for CNBC is 'CNBS' because they push out a bunch of crap, straight up lies at times. That's interesting that you think they are in the middle and not political (not true at all of a ton of their content). This content was quality, which is nice though.

Probably your best show ever. Thanks for not spinning everything Tesla does in a bad light👍🇳🇴
I agree, the positive spin is a refreshing change!
Bro it's not spun in a negative light, Tesla is going to fail if Musk continues to wake ppl up to the real him. Positively spinning the narrative is straight up lying also electric cars are not the future they are Not sustainable. He talks about autonomous driving which just a month ago killed two people in NY and is not even working on Tesla. Tesla is going down. Musk is a Idiot.
It was nice to just ask normal questions. Tesla support is sooooo bimodal. Either super fanboy Elon can do no wrong or almost hatred of Cybertruck/Tesla/Elon.
They’ve truly done some radical awesome unique innovation. It just makes so much sense to have a metal truck. Trucks being electric having all that torque available from the onset makes sense.
Innovative competition amongst these companies is just about always better for us the consumer.
Huh? Why the norwegian flag? Franz is not norwegian lol
Franz is a legend because of his work at Tesla, he's basically the rockstar of car design in this current age
Lol you musk fanboys are truly pathetic
Tesla vehicles are not attractive and the cybertruck is the worst looking vehicle I've seen in a long time. It's still vaporware after 3 years so hopefully they show some humility and fix the design.
@@LigerSupremacy Yeah they are so ugly they only sell millions of them...the VW Beetle was considered ugly and look how many of them were sold. With a design approved by Adolph Hitler.

Thank you for having a positive interview. It gets annoying seeing mainstream media always go for the clickbait negative articles/interviews. I really enjoyed this interview.
Wait is is clickbait that he hangs out with anti semites and calls racism free speech? Free speech doesn’t mean you’re absolved of consequences.
BUT
according to how you all are commenting, you feel that money is all that matters. And like he said, the model S design is still modern and fresh, 14 years in! No need to redesign every couple years. They've removed massive legacy costs with all these efficiencies. Brilliant.
Great interview, its is refreshing to see CNBC acknowledging Tesla's undeniable and incredible accomplishments rather than the biased FUD we are used to seeing

Who cares what a video makes him look like? What a white bureaucratic thought
Great interview. Unbiased, fact seeking and cordial - rare these days. Franz comes across as highly competent and the right man for a disruptive and revolutionary company. Tesla obviously gives him the freedom to produce stupendously good products. He strikes me as having the right temperament to be managed by a tough boss like Elon! Good man!
Unbiased? This will have had to go across 7 lawyers and Elon's desk before it went live..

Excellent interview. I would like to see more interviews with Tesla execs and workers. Tesla doesn’t advertise so it would be nice to know more about them as they grow larger and larger.
As Tesla tries to grow larger and as the competition increases, Tesla will have to advertise.
@@rlsedition Indeed, news and other stations should work to stay on Tesla’s good side if they want some of that money. So far they seem to be biting the hand of their future master a lot.
@@nickmcconnell1291 Sorry, but I don't see Tesla as the "future master". The other car companies will catch up and they know a heck of a lot more about building cars than Tesla ever will. Tesla was first in this segment and that always helps, but don't underestimate the other players.
@@rlsedition I hope you are right, but I fear you are wrong.
Here is why:
Tesla can build a car for about half what it costs the OEMs to do it. They also can build them at least 3 times faster than VW who was known up till then as the fastest car builder in the world.
Tesla has locked in supply contracts for years with battery suppliers, mines, etc. They do not have nearly the supply chain issues others have and will continue to have into the latter part of this decade….. by then it will all be nearly over.
EVs are run on software and Tesla is the front runner on this too.
Finally Tesla does not have to deal with unions nor dealers (who mark up the price of the cars making them not as competitive).
I think this is Tesla’s game to lose. BYD may give them a run for their money but I think the OEMs, if they survive, will be mere shadows of their former status.
@@nickmcconnell1291 If Tesla can build cars so cheaply, then why don't they offer something that's affordable. A model 3 STARTING at $40k + is not affordable.

Or try to have these three guys in one frame … that would be supercool and nostalgic 😊
JB Straubel is no longer at Tesla...he is head of Redwood Materials.

Tesla is fine Elon is not, new CEO would be good at this point, the innovation is held back by his antics.
@@LafemmebearMusic how is Tesla innovation held back by Musk's Twitter fiasco? Tesla has been intentionally and ruthlessly focused on increasing production of existing models from two new factories; as Elon Musk has repeatedly explained on investor calls, introducing any new models in 2022 would only reduce its total production volume. We'll see in 2024 if Tesla has uncompetitive products and battery chemistries because the competition innovated while Tesla kept making more of the same widgets. I'm fairly confident that Franz von Holzhausen and engineering teams are working on future stuff in-house, but it's not going to announce anything that would reduce demand for its current car models.

Should the title read "Tesla’s Chief Designer On The Cybertruck And Keeping His Job"
From an artistic standpoint, this truck is fugly. From a function over form standpoint, it's absolutely beautiful!
Watch videos of it in traffic, it looks like a car from a videogame or SF movie was pasted into real life. Unreal.
Good job CNBS
I remember when Rivian first came around and people said they would never produce a car while supporting Tesla. Look how the turntables
Rivian produced 7,363 BEVs in Q3 2022; meanwhile in the same period Tesla produced 365,000 and is ramping up production at its massive new Austin Texas and Berlin factories. Producing "a car" is not hard; making 50,000 a year is. Rivian, Lucid, Fisker, Vinfast, Aptera, Sono, Lightyear, etc. are all learning this the hard way.
Franz creativity is being unleashed i don't think that would be possible anywhere but Tesla. Can't wait to see the Cybertruck in the wild. It's a standout so eloquently designing the form to follow the function the materials and the technology is brilliant the cybertruck is a revolution that defies tradition.
When you see the cybertruck or the semi on the road then you will know we are in the future.
HUH? The interior of the Mercedes EQ, and the newer BMW i4, iX, i7, as well as other EVs kick the crap out of Tesla in terms of design, build quality and materials for their interiors. Go sit in an EQS and then get in a Tesla Model S. See which one you'd rather have. I'd take the Mercedes in a heart beat. I do NOT need a car that does 0-Ticket much faster than the EQS or the BMW EVs do. The only thing that Tesla might have is their Supercharger network and they typically do have slightly better charge times. But I think those advantages might go away. Tesla's been doing it longer, so they have more development time involved. But it Elon detracts from Tesla, then he may find himself behind the 8 ball.
I want a cyber truck so bad. I have a Y now and if I could get a Tri Motor soonish I would be so happy
