  • A few words about being stiff and losing your swing.
Believe me I know all about a stiff body and pain. I've played golf in pain for 34 years. Ithink I am sufficiently qualified to talk about a stiff golf swing and losing distance off the tee.
Yes, I do trash some Lee Trevino advice. Not all Touring Professionals are good teachers. That's a fact!

Finally someone who has similar pain and mobility issues to myself. 2 hip operations and countless physiotherapy visits have helped. I have played for many years with the closed stance approach which provides for a better turn and longer backswing. If I swing with an open stance my turn on the backswing is reduced, "locked" even which affects swing path through the hitting area and the ball tends to go left. To combat this I would have to swing more "in to out" and use my hands more to square the clubface. Practice even more I guess....hmmm....

Hello Alistair, I may of had an accident a long time ago but at least I didn't play contact sport after I left school. So many guys queueing up for new hips and knees.
Well, this video is just a suggestion. I always say if it doesn't fit your game then discard it. If you're curious try it. Go find a Pro your own age not a youngster who wants you to swing with the latest Tour trend. Stretch, exercise, walk. But not too much. A heavy club helps.
Let's see if we can keep going a bit longer. That's it. Thanks for the comment.

I FOLLOWED YOUR ADVICE & MY DRIVES USUALLY FOUND THE FAIRWAY AVERAGING A TOTAL DISTANCE OF 153 YARDS FOR 8 DRIVES.
CONSIDERING IT WAS A SIGNIFICANT CHANGE OF STANCE & BALL FLIGHT IT WAS A VERY SATISFACTORY CHANGE.
I HAVE ALTERED MY PING G430 DRIVER LOFT FROM 13 degrees TO 12*6 degrees ready for my next trial.
THAT WILL REDUCE THE FACE ANGLE & DRAW BIAS.
I USED MY IDEA THAT OTHER OF YOUR GOLF FOLLOWERS MIGHT WANT TO TRY.
TO ACCURATELY CHECK WHERE ON THE DRIVER FACE YOU STRIKE THE BALL I USE DRIVER WOOD IMPACT PAPER STICKERS &
MARK MY BALL WITH A 1 cm. diameter circle with black permanent marker which shows up clearly on the sticker after each strike.
ANOTHER GREAT TIP IS TO READ ALL THE COMMENTS & YOUR REPLIES TO GET A GENEROUS SUPPLY OF PRACTICAL TIPS & IDEAS.
I AM DELIGHTED I DISCOVERED YOUR SITE & LOOK FORWARD TO WATCHNG YOUR OTHER VIDEOS.
CONSIDERING THE BIG CHANGE OF STRIKING THE BALL I WAS PLEASED WITH IRON,HYBRID & FAIRWAY WOOD STRIKES

@@alangoudie2299 Alan, that is wonderful news. I have fiddled with loft in the past just to get the right flight, to keep it mid rather than too high. I've settled on 10.5 degrees but then I do play it back a little bit, I'm a bit old fashioned in that. Started so long ago.
When I want to check the face I use some masking tape, something that wont leave a sticky mark.

Excellent advice. Actually I've been playing so long have tried all closed, open etc etc swing up swing down off front foot off center swinng to the right swing to the left. This year I've gradually come to hitting open stance especially with my fairway hybrids as it seems hitting off the ground further impedes the follow through. Those hybrids have become so reliable its like hitting a pitching wedge. Also own a cheapo heavy speed stck type device which I do not use enough to make a differenve.
As I recall, Gary Player , now about 86 years old, still gets a swing speed of about 86 he is a stay fit advocate

You want to hit it long when you’re old, then learn to hit it long when you are young and keep as fit and flexible as you can to maintain the distance for as long as possible. You will not suddenly start hitting drives 250 yards down the middle at 60 years of age if you couldn’t do that when you were in your forties. Practice your short game to maintain reasonable scores but you have to accept that old Father Time spares no one from golfing decline. Just accept your limitations and enjoy playing golf.

At about 73yo I found it difficult to break 100. I blamed my clubs first, then I blamed the foursome I played with and started to blame walking 18 holes. I changed my driver, I played with others and I started riding a cart. Quadruple bogie and worse headed my way. So what was my problem? Basically I suspected that I just wasn't physically fit.
At 75yo decided to do some of the aerobic exercises on UA-cam. 5 days of repeated exercises I shot an 88. Continuing these exercises for the next 2 weeks I scored an 87 then an 85. The results were like almost immediate. Aerobic exercises treats the whole body, ankles, hamstring, biceps, triceps, neck, range of motion, balance, memory and coordination. I haven't tried the orange whip but I'm wondering what muscles would that train and would that be enough to bring about the results that I got.

It's just the way I learnt on hard ground - get the ball first. With the driver I would say it's a fraction back because I'm wanting to push it to the right a bit.
That's the best way I can describe what I do and why. I guess if I changed to a new course and turf the ball would creep forward a bit with irons as it's sat up better.

How do i try to hit a draw? I try to copy Jack Nicklaus, aim right with a closed face. Although most of the time I just pull it to be honest.
This video is aimed at people who hit less than 200 yards carry. With a swing speed of 75mph or less with the driver there is no height o nthe ball and it goes to ground very quickly. The closed down stance and low loft on a driver is not good for these people.
It is assumed the draw goes further but only if you have a decent swing speed to start with. Mine is 95mph and I hit a fade further than a draw. Because I can get through the damn ball properly when i'm open.

Tape a couple of old wedges or irons together and theres your heavy club! Only problem us you can't take a propper grip.
Its an interesting topic and while i agree that everyone should do as much physical movement and improvement as they can, golf needs to do more to get people playing shorter courses. I'll keep harping on about it because it just makes so much difference to the enjoyment of the game.

I used to use 2 clubs Robert but always found it hard to grip. Can't do it now my hands hurt too. I agree about shorter courses. Even ordainry golf clubs move the tees back as they want the course to play harder for a the tiny few who can hit it as far as the Pros. The worst I saw was a par 5 turned into a par 4 for the sake of about 3 people. The rest of us suffered with the change. I will be playing some shorter courses in the future on my away days. My course has a 470 yard par 5, to be fair it's already reasonably short but from the reds it's a 430 yard par 4. It just doesn't make any sense to me at all 🤷‍♂️ they've made the hole longer when the idea of shorter tees is to make it shorter 🤣

Then went away from my game plan on 11, landed in the same bunker as last time out and bladed it into the same OB as last time out. Ended up taking a 7 on what I should play as a very simple par 4.

Hell Tim, that is a very decent handicap for 58, I've crept up to 6 but on some courses only get 4. I never quite conquered the game and got below a 'real' 5 handicap. Well done.
Gentle stretching is helping me, doing it very much little and often. 3 minutes every time I get out of this damn chair which I have sat in all day and now in the evening editing a video. It's now automatic to get up once an hour and do the hand in pocket. I point my toes 5 to 1 to help the turn. The days of hitting into "a firm left side" like they used to teach in the 90's are long behind me. I find the only way to get my left hip out of the way is to put it out of the way before I start the backswing.
I really don't undertand the right foot 6 inches back. Lee Trevino was a wonderful golfer but he is no teacher. Old guys need to be open not shut.
