I love your 68 highboy she's one nice ole rig. I would definitely keep the topper, I miss my old fords their not too common in my neck of the woods up here in Canada anymore, unless you live out west where the weather is much dryer. I live in the rust belt so they don't last that long. I've own many fords throughout my life though, 63, 64, 76, 79, 92 till 2001 Now I own a Toyota Tacoma four by four with V6 crew cab. Yeah its a nice truck but I must admit, I do miss my old fords.
I bought this highboy in post falls Idaho and drove it home. My 13yr old son and I took the trip of a lifetime. We visited all the national parks; Yellowstone, Badlands, Devils Tower, Mt. Rushmore. It was an adventure. The clutch slave rod broke in half in Yellowstone. I welded it back together with an Allen wrench from the parks service station scrap bin. It's still on the truck and holding up nicely. I hope to do a body swap on the highboy later this year with a boxwood green patina 2wd I own. The old Fords are fun and simple to work on. You can't beat the reliability of those Tacoma's though. I just don't fit in them, I'm 6'5" and i like a fullsize truck. Thanks for the comment!
@@HalfMoonCustoms much appreciated 👍 I will set my notification to make sure I don't miss it , truly looking forward to the end product , and the process of getting there , nothing like this in the UK 🇺🇲🇺🇸
Though I hate to see those cabs cut up, I’m really digging the use of the third cab back section to resolve the rear door upper transitions. Great job guys
I had a 1970 f100 in high school 302, 3 on the tree. Miss that truck for sure. I keep dreaming about getting another. It might be interesting to see one swapped to a newer f150 frame.
I just saw this video, it’s funny I just did this but made a club cab on a crown Vic frame. Guess I had better put video together and post it. Can’t wait for part 4.
@@HalfMoonCustoms strong arm steering😂 I guess that's like hand crank windows by Armstrong! I'm glad people like you, ford era, vice grip garage, etc are saving this old iron from the scrap yard still! Yeah, I wish we never sold the 74' highboy. I was born the same year the truck was produced/purchased so I was always obsessed with it! In 1975 he swapped out the original engine for a 428 cobra jet he pulled out of a wrecked police interceptor. He raced it at the 4x4 drags and competed in tractor pulls at Baylands Raceway. Broke the front diff housing in two from over estimating speed needed on a dune climb at Pismo Beach. Launched 4+ feet in the air and broke it when we landed. Tons of great memories with that truck! Anyway, sorry to ramble. Can't wait to see your next video on the 4 door build!
New to your show. Love your imagination 👍👏🇦🇺😎. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the project unfold to a very cooool truck.. Keep the camper body. Sz😎🇦🇺
That’s some great ingenuity! I have a 1979 f350 crew cab longbed that Is sitting on a 2007 f350 crew cab dually 4x4 frame. The wheel base is longer on the 2007 so I’ve decided to stretch the rear doors and cab to compensate instead of cutting the frame or making the bed longer. Cool video I’ll follow your build!
Hi I just found your channel to day I'm a Ford man my self so I have SUB to your channel 👍 when I weld sheet metal I do spots weld's I space the spots out about 3" part what I do is spot weld then I use a air gun to cool off the metal if you keeping your metal cool if won't wrap on you and if you have a wide crack to fill use coat Hager at the same time your welding.
Thanks. I try to use some scrap steel on long panels to absorb some of the heat. Air cooling does help but rapid heat n cool can warp the metal also. I prefer a heat sink and give it time. I like using that 4140 coat hanger rod to fill in. It works good. Im currently out so im using 4140 fence wire at the moment ;) Thanks for watching and subscribing.
You put the back cab backwards?!? Suicide doors would be slick. This is amazing as is. I love to see the rarely thought of ideas demonstrated by those who can.
So the frequently commented thing is why not make the rear doors suicide. However when you see the body mount locations it makes perfect sense as to why we didn't do that. This way we have a front, middle and rear cab mounting location. There's nothing to fab there. When we get to the frame part it will make more sense because we can just stretch a frame and put a rear cab crossmember in the frame to have it fully tied together. I would like to do a dentside 73-79 cab with suicide rear doors in the future. Thanks for the comment and watching!
So check it out, I restored 4x4s for almost 7 years. We built two crew cabs (67-72) fords and I’ll admit that they look awesome! However, my six year old son didn’t have any leg room in the back and he’s not a big kid. Those crew cabs of that era were basically an extended cab with a full size bench seat shoved in there. If I ever bought one for personal use, I’d buy another reg cab and extend just the rear most part behind the rear door ( similar to new dodge mega cabs) to allow the rear seat to go back another 4-6 inches. That’s all they need. My crew cab square body is a little cramped but far better than the Ford. An adult can sit back there but in those fords forget about it
Very cool project building that quad cab. I have always liked the 67-72 ford pickups. I have a 72 f250 4x4 I put a 69 429 in it and power steering and Dana 60 disk break from a 79 f350. The truck still has the original 4 speed transmission and T case. It’s on 35/12.5/16.5s it has the ford after factory AC. It’s the ranger xlt 2 Tone green. It’s still dent free still original paint can’t beat the classic iron fords
I've got a 69 Ranger, F-250, all original, 360 F E , two barrel, lower end never opened, replaced the timing chain and gears, 27 years ago, in this 4×4, factory high boy,
I need to say this, your mockup looks like a better laid out design than ALL the old coachbuilt versions of extended cabs. You addressed the angled B pillars that always look like they got lazy when it counted most.
Your boys are doing a fine job back in the early eighties I had a 56 Ford pickup I was going to make crew cab but I was going to cut the back of the cabs out and weld the cabs together back to back wouldn't have been easier for you guys to put the back of the cabs back to back and made the back door suicide doors and then take a third back of the cab and add it on to the end of it . To each his own good job though
We did consider doing that. The decision was to go with this way. Probably a bit more leg room this way and it keeps the cab more factory appearing. We will probably do a Dentside next and may go that route.
Well i'm a new subscriber and just found out there is more than Chevys on U-Tube , there's Fords too . Ha Ha really I'm both a Ford and Chevy guy , have both in my driveway . Cars , Trucks ect. like both . Never owned any bump sides but had several dent sides .
Look in to putting a small window between the two doors instead of a big piece of sheet metal. It would help with the huge blind spot your going to have there. And I think it would help with the flow. Great job so far I'm enjoying the build! See you on the next video.
I think that leaning the b pilar forward might have made it look a bit better. It would also have the same lean as the back of the door so that the glass can have a track on both sides. You just have to watch out for interference on the door hinges. It looks like it's going to have lot's of room inside. I had a 1966 crew cab and the back was a bit tight.
Thanks. I will try to show how we fixed the window track in the future. I believe we can make the back door have a full glass without having to worry about it hitting the hinge since we modded it.

I love that topper on that truck. The look reminds me of a 74' F250 highboy my dad bought new that I grew up with....except yours is a bumpside.
Can’t beat an old highboy! They’re some tough trucks. My first truck was a 77’ f150 with a turd 351M and strong arm steering (ps that didn’t work)

I’ve wanted to do this for a long time, but mount the second cab backwards to make the rear doors suicide, can then make a neat B pillar
Seems several of yall have said to do it that way. I'm not against the idea, maybe we will do a 73-79 ford cab that way in the future.
