I was on the field, on the 50 yard line, when I saw SCV first do this in an exhibition performance in 1982. It was my first time seeing a drum corps, the whole show left me awestruck, and Simple Gifts became embedded in my heart. In 2012 I held my six year old daughter on my lap for her first drum corps show, and when this was played, I bawled. Life was perfect in that moment.

I was on that very field for BOA--my last time on a field as a senior, less than a year before this. Couple of us got back together to see DCI in 2009 to bear witness to one of the greatest moments in its history. This closer ended an era for me like nothing else could have. I'll never forget the feeling that the wall of sound that hit me brought with it the future itself. Still gives me chills to this day. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY was sitting down.

If DCI were the Staples Center, a statue of the trumpet player would be one of those out front. Iconic. We (Academy) did a lot of the same early shows with SCV the beginning of 09 and I was absolutely floored when I heard Simple Gifts for the first time.

The use of the Maestoso on the company front was sheer genius. The crowd reaction says it all. Goose bumps and tears when I saw it live and whenever I watch this clip. This IS the definitive version. Once again - SCV got it right.

I was there all week quarters, semis and finals. No one was going to beat the Blue Devils. I was actually there supporting Crown because one of my former students was in that group. No one has ever beaten the effectiveness of this stately closer but the exit was even better with the unfurling then merging of the S symbols. This had to be one of the most effective drills to music I have ever seen. It was an amazing ending for a 5th place group.

Just fantastic! When I saw this live at Finals I was Blown Away! The ending of this show is definitely a tip-of-the-cap to Zingali and the Garfield Cadets of 1987, with a touch of Blast! style body movement thrown in. And yet it is uniquely Santa Clara. That is what I love about the activity. Take great ideas and make them work for you in your own way. What Zingali and Jim Prime did for Garfield's 87 production (one of the best of its' era) was maybe a small impetus for the staff of SCV to create their own version. This is why I can watch 2009 SCV and 1987 Garfield and see two totally different shows that are both amazing, yet also see some connections.

About a year late here, but I think I know why. It sounds like mic placement. You can hear that one mello taking breaths while the note is being held. The mic is probably really close to that one mello. I could be wrong, but that's my best guess.

Because your brain hears the crowd roar and finally starts to turn back on, and you remember it’s probably the last time you’ll ever have that horn on your face in that setting ever again. So you just let it rip for all you’re worth, and mellos just have the little special sizzle when you pump them full of air.

this did little for me because it was primarily synthesizer. if you can't hear it you must be deaf.

Should’ve been a ballad or opener. Still one of the best moments of DCI, ever

If only they had trusted this great moment to the pure, gorgeous sound of the SCV brass, and left the god-awful, unnecessary, cheesy, ear-insulting, obviously fake electronic bass completely unplugged… 😞
It’s hard to imagine being a contra player, and knowing that my signature brass tone is being treated like it needs “help” from this characterless keyboard shit.
