I had a similar experience with myt 16 yr old daughter. She had a sub burn cause she didn’t want to put in sunscreen that day, she wanted to leave work early, but was made to understand that every choice has consequences. She stayed at work.
My rule of thumb is, at the beginning of any seasonal activities, the understanding is that if she wants to partake, there will be no quitting until the end. Examples include gymnastics, swim lessons, ski lessons, piano, etc. Now my daughter is all grown up, and her work ethic is amazing.

Absolutely. Parents do not pass along character to their children, probably because the parents lack character. We are in trouble.

I walked away from High School Football after getting the same speech Dana mentions from my parents. 3 weeks in I was told I by the lead coach I would never be allowed to play varsity and I would be little more than practice meat for the rich kids. Not that I wasn't good enough, but because my parents were not rich and connected and it would cost them to buy my way in to the JV and varsity teams without getting caught. By the 5th week instead of learning to play well I and other boys were told we would be taught how to cheat, how to hurt and break the kids on the other teams. We would get ejected and benched for awhile but our job would be to take out the other team's best players so our "stars" could shine and have clean records for their future football opportunities. For those last two weeks I hated myself, its not in my nature to hurt anyone, to cheat or do harm. I never told my parents, they would not have handled it well. Instead for the rest of HS my stepdad harassed me for being a quitter but neither he nor my mom ever asked me why. Sometimes our kids have reasons to quit something and they can't or won't tell us why. Sometimes you've got to trust your kids judgement and decern between them being flakes, protecting themselves from abuse, or perhaps protecting someone else.

I know it might seem harsh, but I think it's important to tell the young man; Mom and dad will support your decision, but since you did give you're word, it is important that you call your coach and teammates and you inform them that you have decided to not compete. The lesson is that if you give your word, it is your responsibility and your's alone to withdraw yourself, not mom and dads.

Megyn- such a great story about your son-it reminded me of a children’s book written by Mia Hamm, Winners Never Quit-my grand daughter and I both love that book!! (Btw touching back to an earlier portion of today’s show, what a wonderful example Mia Hamm provides)
You should write a children’s book about that Snapshot from your son’s life-books like that are so helpful in teaching children about character, about choosing what is right…and it is those moment to moment, day to day, decisions that build strong character

Excellent post. Wouldn't it be great if you could have short sound bites like this that counters the sordid realities you report on daily so well. It encourages us (subscribers) to persevere and fight for the right to be good parents. Also other listeners caught up in the downward spiral who can hear the contrasting lifestyles. Ps. Don't mean be a psychologist, social worker etc, just personal practical experiences that say hey! this works, this is how, and this is why. Its about creating a dynasty one family at a time amongst your followers. I'm one of many admirers of your unpretentious, no nonsense, factual reporting. Be encouraged.

This is why i refuse to commit to helping someone move. I know the second I commit, I'll do everything in my power to get out of it. On the other hand, I also refuse to ask anyone else to help me move. I'd rather pay a company to do it.

"You get a shiver in the dark
It's a raining in the park but meantime-
South of the river you stop and you hold everything
A band is blowing Dixie, double four time
You feel alright when you hear the music ring
Well now you step inside but you don't see too many faces
Coming in out of the rain they hear the jazz go down
    Competition in other places
Uh but the horns they blowin' that sound
    Way on down south
    Way on down south
    London town
You check out guitar George, he knows-all the chords
Mind, it's strictly rhythm he doesn't want to make it cry or sing
They said an old guitar is all, he can afford
When he gets up under the lights to play his thing
And Harry doesn't mind, if he doesn't, make the scene
He's got a daytime job, he's doing alright
He can play the Honky Tonk like anything
Savin' it up, for Friday night
    With the Sultans
    We're the Sultans of Swing
Then a crowd a young boys they're a foolin' around in the corner
Drunk and dressed in their best brown baggies and their platform soles
They don't give a damn about any trumpet playin' band
It ain't what they call Rock and Roll
    And the Sultans
Yeah, the Sultans, they play Creole
    Creole
And then the man he steps right up to the microphone
And says at last just as the time bell rings
"Goodnight, now it's time to go home"
Then he makes it fast with one more thing
    "We are the Sultans
We are the Sultans of Swing" ...(dire straights) cool song imo...

,,,imo the best thing one can do for their children these days is buy some or have a lot big enough to build a guest house and when they get older it's their house , especially if there's already a college nearby , i hate dividing the land unless it's a family space , but the thing is it can be rented on lease if extra money needed or someones retirement place closer anyway is where i'm at , i mean if they don't have a spot to park a broke down car you're poor i don't care where one lives for example , just stupid bs financing deals and building materials and employment /real estate joint schemes perpatrated and the money is fake, adjustable as well as essential supplies....in other words they try to strnagle off-grid hurry for off- grid too.../ranting
