He comes across as an incredibly dry sort of man. Not dislikable by any means, but he seems to have a, ''let's get the graphs out'' type of personality that's hard *to* like. Perfect for no-strings-attached clubs and fans like Real Madrid. Liverpool as an entity is an emotional club; behaviour considered a sleight resonates particularly deeply. His ultimate undoing with Liverpool fans will always be joining the mancs. Graph away, Michael. That's unforgivable.

As an ex Sports journo I talked with colleagues and God did I hear some stories about Michael Owen (some never printed) he's ruthless, cold amd tbh not very bright, that goes back decades. The ruthless was quite evident in his choice of club he went to, Real Madrid after Lpool assured him.of a rebuild, Newcastle because according to him on his way back to Liverpool apparently (Ncastle bumped up the price) but having a helicopter to fly him back and forwards in his tenure there wasn't about money and then the ultimate kick in the cojones joining United, he's the type of guy you wouldn't trust with the last life jacket and is a pure opportunist selfish individual, that's why Liverpool can't stomach the guy, oh and his analysis of football is tedious and that Dubai ad...Jesus christ, I had Ted Maul from Brass Eye in my head 'Coswick, from the moon satellite it's a small dot, but on the ground it's a huge mess like Dante meets Bosch in a crack lounge'

He went to United. I'd imagine it is as simple as that. Same reason in reverse is why we united fans hate Paul Ince.

    • @Ligerpride
      @Ligerpride 22 дні тому

My (United fan) feeling with Ince is that he portrays professionalism rather than club loyalty. Ince prefers United but is open in that if Liverpool were in a final against a team he didn't play for he would support them.
Owen seems to be in an odd position of simping for Liverpool even though Liverpool fans openly remain hostile to him. I don't think the same hostility is there from United fans for Ince.
Ince was sold by Ferguson, it wasn't something Ince was looking for. Similarly United had the opportunity to resign him and didn't take it.

He just didn’t understand the mentality behind playing for Liverpool that’s why he left for Madrid just so he could say he had played for them, joining Utd was unforgivable even though not directly from Liverpool he obviously lacked empathy for LFC or it’s fans otherwise he would have backed out of Utd offer, Fowler was completely different as he was a scouser and was so excited about coming back even though not playing as much

Finding out what kind of man he really is crushed me. When I was a plucky 4 year old boy first getting into sports, I just thought that Michael Owen was a guy who liked to play football and so I felt I could identify with him. I recall reading a how-to-become-a-footballer type book that he had wrote and seeing him playing his PS1 and having a kick about with his friends made me think 'oh, he's just like me but older'. How wrong I was!

Michael Owen was my favourite Liverpool player. He was a superstar and he was homegrown. To this day I think he was one of our best ever strikers and I have great memories of the FA Cup he won single handedly.
I would not say I dislike him more that I am disappointed. Fair enough he wanted to leave, that's football, it was the way his departure was manged through the press and the way he said he wouldn't leave without ensuring Liverpool got value but he dragged on his transfer for so long that he was going to get a Bosman if we didn't accept the money from Real Madrid.
For a guy who was club captain, had played first team since he was a teenager and a guy who had continually been selected when he was not in premium form it just seemed a bit disloyal.

Michael Owen is a traitor not cause he went to Madrid and left Liverpool or him joining Newcastle or stoke it was joining utd and winning the premier league with them but also these days he will act like a liverpool legend and a utd legend he is neither he kept getting injured since leaving Liverpool his last silverware being the league cup against utd he was a hero at Liverpool and he tarnished his whole legacy. For money and to win a Premier league with the he rivals. He will never be a liverpool legend. Fowler went to city before they had oil money but played for Liverpool after I think Owen is just a football mercenary who likes money but joining utd when he had offers wen was linked with other premier league teams and other teams abroad. Fergie at utd was a big gambler and loved the horses races and so did Owen. He will always be a good player until 03 but his whole legacy has been tarnished now from what he says in his book about Newcastle and stoke to playing and scoring for rivals and celebrating with utd

Always seemed an obvious 'player has one big contract left so runs down his deal to maximise the money he recieves on his next contract' type thing...he wanted that sweet signing on bonus that only out of contract players on a free receive, see mcmanaman and Owen for previous examples, there was no way we could ever match what psg offered him with our extremely strict wage structure that had to have salah as the biggest earner or it would simply break down into chaos, I mean mane was raising hell wanting parity with mo, eventually leaving because we couldn't pay them both 300kpw+ so there was no way in hell wijnaldum could be paid anything like that. Psg on the other hand didn't have to pay a fee for him and are rich so literally threw money at him...despite what he said publicly it is now obvious gini never had any real interest in staying at Liverpool...and why should he? He was worth the money he got at psg and he had served us with distinction

He was just breaking through when I started supporting Liverpool so I'll always have a bit of a soft spot for him - people forget just how good he was in those first few years at Liverpool. I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that he was attracting Mbappe-like levels of hype after the '98 World Cup. But I don't think any fanbase really warmed to him - even while at Liverpool he never seemed to be as liked as Fowler or Gerrard though.
He never seemed that into football either, which makes it really weird that he's regularly on as a pundit (he's not as bland as he used to be but still not great)

    • @jamesw2546

He was not as loved as fowler or Gerrard, I think it's because fans saw fowler and Gerrard as one of their own whose fame stature ad global association of them was in a Liverpool shirt. As soon as owen scored THAT goal against Argentina he would never have that initial associations as a liverpool player first a d that's what separated him from Robbie.
I dint think liverpool fans dont like him we just dint put him in tbe idol category his fame and ability would indicate.

This is gonna sound so petty but getting into football properly around 1993, I was 9yrs old and Robbie Fowler was everything to me and over time I felt like the shine was off him when Owen burst onto the scene and made it that it was a matter of time before Fowler went…which did happen and I put it down to Owen, I think that was the start of my hatred for the man! That isn't necessarily true. Carragher and Gerrard said in their autobiographies that whenever he met up with them for England after coming back from Spain he was pestering them about coming back to Liverpool. I don't like that he joined utd and they got him on a free transfer but Liverpool missed the boat when it came to getting him and it's questionable that they ever wanted to board it. His injury record may have been a factor but they could have done worse than bring him back. Him and Torres might have forged a good partnership in attack.

My first match at Anfield was in 2001 against Newcastle and he scored a hattrick. A few months later he scored his double against Arsenal to win the FA Cup. He was electric, he was winning us trophies and winning the balon dor. I was 8, he was my hero.
Now I feel absolutely nothing for him. Not hate, just nothing. Like if Didi Hamman or Emile Heskey is doing punditry, I'll remember them fondly. If it's Owen, it's like the past never happened. The way he left the club was it for me.
IMO, Liverpool was developing a team for Owen to shine (even God Fowler was casted aside)
But he chose to go to 'a bigger club to win trophies'.
Those allegations about poor post game / injury care during his time at Liverpool... sure, the club was going through a lot at the board level, etc. But erm, he couldn't afford personal medical experts to help himself out?
And then joining Man Utd? 🤦‍♀️
If i ever bumped into him somewhere, I'd rather ignore him and say hi to the lamppost next to him.

Dear Andy, I (35) would think that we are of a similar vintage. I would love, just once, for somebody to do a deep dive/run down/explainer of what EXACTLY went on with the whole Gillet and Hicks thing... maybe somebody's written a book about it, and maybe there are vids on here about it, but I'm fully not gonna bother searching for it, I'm just gonna type it in here.
Cuz like, ye always hear: "Ohhh it was a dark time for the club. It nearly went bust etc etc"... but ye never really hear anyone actually outlining what really went on there?? I remember Carragher wrote about it in his book, but I don't remember him goin tooo deep on it...

Great player in his day and the FA cup final against Arsenal when we got hammered and he won it for us is enough for most decent folk to say thank you.

Then when I was around 10 years old he moves to Utd, at a time in which 3/4 of my mates were Utd supporters. For some of us, it can be hard to forgive. Seeing that goal (and celebration) against City at the 137th minute of Fergie Time or whatever it was definitely soured me on him forever lol.

For me, I do not blame McManaman in the slightest. We were a club going absolutely nowhere and he was a fantastic talent, and I admit it did kill me at the time but look at what he went on to achieve on the biggest of stages. you cannot call what he did a failure and I do not blame him whatsoever. He is as red as any of us, Owen, I don’t think so.

  • @masterjb1
    @masterjb1 18 днів тому

Everything in this video contributes to the reason some of us dislike him. The number one reason is of course the United move, but the United move doesn't come about without him chasing England, moving to Madrid and Newcastle and finally the personality that doesn't really consider moving to United might result in him being shunned by Liverpool fans as obvs they'll understand there is Michaels Owens personal glory on the line.
The united move, if he just swerved that, then the other stuff would have softened over time and we'd have welcomed him back Fernando Torres style to a legends game. Hindsight is a wonderful thing but Rafa went the year after that transfer window. If Owen goes to Hull, or likewise for a year and proves he still has it, hes an open goal like Fowler in 2005 to get the fans onside for Roy Hodgson or for Kenny Dalglish to snap up the next season. But he chose the medal he sat on the bench for over the fans and he pays for it. Unloved by many at Liverpool, a punchline to a joke at United, disliked by Newcastle and irrelevant to Madrid. It was all for England and even there, once he failed to break the scoring record for England he became merely a footnote to David Beckhams story for England once Kane and Rooney all but wiped him away.

  • @diego750

I'm a Liverpool fan and I dont dislike Michael Owen. He was an incredibly skilful , intelligent striker. I remember younger Liverpool fans especially used to love him. He probably started top level football too early, which could have led to the injuries later in his career that pretty much ended his career. He was mediocre at best after he'd been binned by RM and Newcastle, so i couldn't care less he went to Man U. He should have stayed at Liverpool and Im sure he knows it.

I’m afraid most of the reasons the fans dislike or even hate Owen just reflect the chippy, hypersensitive, victim mentality of too many scousers. I don’t enjoy saying that as I’m from Liverpool
Liverpool didn’t want to take him back after Madrid or Newcastle. United offered him a contract.
