Saw this guy over 30 years ago at Livingstone concrete skatepark in Scotland UK . Dude blew me away on how fast he skated how high he went and how much he tweaked his grabs absolutely amazing. Demo ended everyone disappeared I dropped in landed flat on my face …. Rough ending to an amazing day😅

I'm sure it was a serious treat to watch that guy skate in person. And I'm sure most didn't want to skate after seeing THAT, so...good on you. You've got his spirit.

I originally knew of John Cardiel through snowboarding. I'm of a similar age and emulated his style from the limited media I could get in the early 90's.
Once I hit my 30's, the ski town hood rat life was over and a few other life setbacks had me in a bad place. A buddy of mine (who was a better skater than snowboarder) knew about my reverence for all things Cardiel and brought me over a burnt DVD copy of this. I knew of John's accident in '04 but nothing of what happened after. My buddy and I split a six pack of beer, a half pack of darts and sat down to watch this on a Sunday afternoon in June 2010. I'm thankful for that afternoon.
After seeing all the things John went through and how he pushed forward and pivoted his life as necessary, I started dispatching my mind of all the nonsense that was keeping me in the hole I had dug for myself. I'd re watch this occasionally if I started feeling resentful or sorry for myself. If John Cardiel could literally pick himself up out of a wheelchair when everyone told him that he'd would never walk again, the least I could do was stop brooding about where I was in life and do something about it. It started the ball rolling for me.
I'm not quite 50 yet but I'm knocking on the door. I've found a better place to be, on my terms. Kinda like I figure John did. I stopped snowboarding years ago but have found other things that I can apply myself to the fullest and find some stoke. While it may not be everyone's dream, I'm happy where I am.
Thanks Vice for re-upping this. Maybe we all can make life a little better by living it like John.
    All hail Cardiel...

Best documentary ever. After watching this several times I can say John is a true life hero to me. After getting shot in Afghanistan and no longer able to skate as good as I used to I can relate at some tiny level. I wish to meet him someday and maybe his vibes can help me land a kick flip. Haven't been able to figure it back out since being shot in 2009. Semper Fi John and thank you so so much for always pushing.

This video was a totally unexpected inspiration in a way i wasn't expecting. About 3 years ago, i was in an accident that (admittedly) i somewhat brought upon myself, but consequently resulted in life changing injuries. Obviously, this brought an immediate end to my life as an active skateboarder. One that began in the late 90's. It absolutely broke my heart.
I wasn't aware cardiel had borne such injuries and just listening to him talk about his recovery and his approach to life in the aftermath has reaffirmed that i can still lead a full life. That the injuries i have don't define who i am.

Modern Skate and Surf in Lansing, MI brought some Deluxe guys out for a signing. It was Max Schaff, Peter Hewitt, Dan Drehobl and John. There was like three people that showed up to the signing so we all played games of SKATE out front of the shop. I got a new board that day and me and John shared it as he didn't have one set up yet. They gave me a shitload of swag before we left. The Lansing park still had snow on it and we had heard someone had cleared the one at mason a couple days earlier. The boys headed to the mason park and my dad took me to follow them. They absolutely destroyed the place on a cold winterish night. Next day was their demo in Grand Rapids at the Modern park. They did the demo and after we all met out in the parking lot for pics. Every single one of them were the most humble dudes ever but I looked up to John so much and he ended up thanking my dad for carting me around to follow them the whole weekend. He said that's cool man, most dad's wouldn't do that. The absolute best weekend of a 15 year old skate kids life. It is one of the best memories I have in my life. All hail Cardiel!!!

Strangely enough, my first sponsored snowskate was a John cardiel pro model wood snowskate from Premier. I used that piece of wood to propel me to a professional snowskate career (yeah it was actually a thing at one time haha) which took me around the world.
Fast forward to 5 years ago and I shattered my spine and became paralyzed from the neck down.
With a miraculous recovery very similar to John’s, I am back to walking and skating again. While I no longer hit 20 stair handrails I am very fortunate enough to be kickflipping again.
The universe is extra strange sometimes.
    All hail Cardiel.

Some through healing and some through adaptation. There were definitely frustrating moments but also tons of positive ones. I’ve found that having good vibes and a positive outlook really helps. And time. Nerve injuries and the potential for healing aren’t well understood (compared to other tissue types) by modern medicine; And are areas of significant ongoing research. Cardiel’s story seems a great example of that. I hope tomorrow is a better day for you.

If you drink a shot every time Cardiel blinks, you'll end up with a very mild buzz.

The point John makes about snowboarding vs skateboarding is 100. Sure snowboarding is fun but skateboarding is so accessible to anyone. I grew up poor, American poor lol, and I attached to skateboarding as soon as I started. It didn’t matter my boards were beat up hand me downs. Once a skater always a skatet

The phrase “FIRE” became popular in American culture around 2016. John Cardiel was saying “Fire” to describe things in the late 90s… dude was such a fuckn trend setter! He started “fire”, that’s crazy!!!

sight unseen is a dope one. Oh man, I had to go check that part again. I always remembered that intro explaining the paradox of how he seemed to be more in control the faster he goes. Me and a buddy would watch that one a lot before skating. There's one where he is going to sack a LONG handrail so bad, and we always loved how he ran down the rail and contained it to something not absolutely terrible. Sick song choice too. Although I remember the Cali Agents song on that vid the best.
