Imagine being her son.
Your mom is a director. You’re enough of fan of One Piece to start and finish reading it during quarantine, and your mom mentions “oh yeah, I’m gonna work on the One Piece show.” You are in a supremely uncommon and important position of influencing official content as a fan.
Whatever impression you give to your mom holds a lot more weight than a random fan’s opinion. She’d want to impress you and have you be proud of her. If you show disinterest or even lackluster enthusiasm, she will remember that.
I think he correctly impressed on his mom that she can’t mess it up and to do Oda justice. Im so happy and would have done the same if given the chance.
She was wrong to work on show. I knew it was doomed from the beginning. I have noticed this trick before from a certain live action Nickelodeon movie with Airbender.
You would trust a completely new fan, who read One Piece in a hurry to catch up, with influencing a director in the live action?
If that was the case, it would give me insanely high anxiety O . o
I'm glad everything went through Oda-sensei first.

Everyone involved in this project has shown nothing but love, dedication, admiration and overall respect towards the source material and Oda himself. I hope that in a few days we can show them how passionate the One Piece fans are and return the love a thousand fold.

I actually stopped during Capaldi's first season. I was really looking forward to it, he was so good in The Thick of It and it was such a massive shift. Well he did a great job, but the writing was such a huge shift towards skin deep nonsense. So yeah, dropped it. I'm going off the opinions I've seen elsewhere in a large review from someone who knows what they're talking about.

i believe in Emma Sullivan and other directors, actors, producers, VFX guys, costume designers, light engineers, composers, makeup artists and so many more people who put their love into this project. I believe in all of them and top of all i believe in ODA SENSEI

Loved her episodes. Honestly Syrup village is my least favorite arc of the east blue in the Manga and Anime but not here. She did it true justice within her parameters and Kuro was ripped right out of the pages, and yeah her episodes are the ONLY time Zoro's bad sense of direction is played upon.
Everyone making this show from the actors to the directors talk about this show with so much passion and joy that I would be extremely sad for them if the show doesn't connect with the audience.

In all fairness, the Straw Hats don't really need to be young... sure they need to be younger than the older generation of pirates but that will be aparent even in five years time... plus the cast are not that young 😂
She just said the world of One Piece is bigger than doctor who… and that encompasses an entire universe!
But truthfully… Senior Pink is more fleshed than most Doctor Who characters.

in the end everything will be the same as the anime. All One Piece fans will judge how each director succeeds in satisfying One Piece fans in every episode he works on. In the anime, we know Megumi Ishitani as a director who manages to satisfy One Piece fans in every episode she works on.
I have finished this season of Netflix One Piece, so I have an advantage over this interviewer. The Netflix crew did a very good job and their "mix-and-match" approach of moving villians and arcs around somewhat worked for me (Arlong at the Baratie, for example). Of course the few hours of this season could only cover a few arcs, so, in retrospect, they were not looking at thousands of chapters, only dozens. Even the various One Piece animated movies managed to distill down numerous episodes into the pertinent parts that could be shown in a couple of hours, so the Netflix people had a model, of sorts.
Thank you One Piece Live action people, for making a good and faithful show. A job well done.

@@oomshaka6683 True of course, but I think I get what Crazyq454 was trying to say: We're a lot to be awfully aware of the effects being a mangaka can have on their health, with such a difficult job and the lifestyle that goes with it, and so they can sadly die young. Thankfully Oda does take breaks regularly, but we're still worried.

Stress affects your health, if hes taking breaks, drinking water, eating healthy, not smoking or drinking too much.... he should be fine to work as much as his passion drives him to. Over working is generally linked to stress.@@zigsteenine8650

Emma did such a great job on Zoro’s backstory (the casting was so good! That kid REALLY looks like Mackenyu as a kid!), and on the relationship between Kaya and Usopp. Usopp wins you over so fast even though he’s not a badass warrior, etc, because of how good and, as Emma says, loyal he is to her and her well-being. Also, I believe she directed the episode with the awesome swordfight between Zoro and the two cat pirates - that was an excellent fight! Loved the atmospheric creepiness of the mansion in lockdown of this arc too!

Ive always wondered why disney and Kevin feige didn't snap one piece up, by far the best story of all time.
tbh part of their work should be to read all of the source material, you can read 1000 chapters in less than a year, (I repeat is part of their job) the live action is 7 years in production.
They don't need to read that much but I would say up to the end of Alabasta Arc. Because they're only on the first season and a possible season 2 coming.

Any person working with their material should know the material better than the average viewer, especially for Onepiece which has so many hidden foreshadowing, clues and characters, plots. They wouldn't connect properly, and any adjustment without concerning these will mess up afterwards(like, they could've left out Coby without knowing he would appear later) And I glad they were fans, like including other characters in Gol D Roger execution etc.

@@oomshaka6683 well, there are certain changes to pack it in just 8 episodes... like they reduced Don Krieg less which may result the scene between Sanji and Ging being cut out. Also, Nami is introduced in Shelltown and Arlong in Baratie, while Gaimon maybe cutout. It's difficult to follow the manga 1 to 1, and if such changes were needed, they have to have prior knowledge of which character, plot etc is important afterwards to make sense, coherence... I'm not saying they should introduce things that are way after beforehand, just that they should know how it goes.

Thanks for doing diversity and not forced diversity. Not race swapping the red-headed lead and not making her too girl boss that she doesn't ask help from a man. Nami is already pretty boss and it just made her human and relatable. Also, the point of Luffy's character was not lost in that very important arc.
What do you mean the live action moved away from the comedy? It added to it and on top of that introduced a darker element. The comedy wasn't taken away 😂

lets be real for a sec, I hope people see this comment before they see the series. They can respect the source and fandom 100% they can be as faithful to the source as possible and the show can still be garbage. Because it's something that just doesn't translate to live action well. Things well get lost in adaptation and what's lost however unintentional could be what makes it work as a manga and as an anime. That said they have set the bar for how much respect and care a production company has for it's source material and fan base.
Wouldn’t call this being real, more like presumptuous. I feel like the biggest thing One Piece fans are going to have to do to enjoy the show is remember that this IS an adaption; not a 1-1 live action remake of the manga or anime. That’s why it’s so important that Oda is heavily involved in the production because even he has to realize it can’t be a complete remaster of his story. He knows what can potentially be lost in adaption and can fill in the blanks in the way HE sees fit, not netflix.
Makes a lot more sense to be optimistic for a change but i understand the skepticism.

She's only one of the directors. Don't just look at her gender. Listen to what she's talking about and how she re-shoot a scene based on Oda's request. Everything goes through Oda first before they get released.
TV series are different from movies where the director has much more creative control. In TV it’s common for every episode of a season to have a different director. What’s more important is the showrunner(s). And whether you’re a fan of this director or not, she’s only doing two episodes, and she answers to the show runners who answer to Oda. And the show runners, especially Matt Owens, are super fans.
