  • A young man takes his nephew to the zoo.
DAY AT THE ZOO is used with permission from Harris Gurny. Learn more at harrisgurny.com.
Jared is a 20-something guy living in Brooklyn, and his life is a bit of a mess. Lacking motivation or direction and smoking weed, he's just getting by, living one day to the next by the seat of his pants, though he thinks everything is just fine.
He's charged with taking care of his nephew Peter for the day. Eager to play uncle, Jared takes the young kid to the Bronx Zoo, where they bond and Jared re-experiences the pleasures of a carefree childhood. But when things take a worrying turn, Jared is forced to realize all is not as okay as it seems.
Written and directed by Harris Gurny and shot on film, this short drama has a gritty, naturalistic look and a loose but thoughtful improvisational feel, reminiscent of the great Hollywood urban dramas of the 1970s. This rich chapter of cinematic history, embodied in films like KLUTE, MEAN STREETS and PANIC IN NEEDLE PARK, explored the darker and seamier underside of city life. But this short applies this sharp, visual approach to a seemingly lighter, more charming story, of an uncle and nephew bonding, to fascinating and resonant results.
We begin with a fleeting but sharp hint of Jared's messy existence and predilections, though he's careful to hide it, especially from his sister, who's leaving her child in his care. Jared's manner is casual yet furtive, charming yet shifty, and hints of his lifestyle show a man who's more interested in partying than embracing adulthood. Yet in the course of his time with his nephew Peter, Jared drops this shell of a persona. Something about being an uncle connects him to something more genuine and authentic, and their time together at the zoo is captured in almost poetic storytelling, taking vicarious pleasure in the moments and sensations of a child's point of view.
As Jared, actor Zach Spiegel has an unaffected, easygoing quality that's affable and likable, and his time with young performer Callan Berry has a sweetness to it. The two connect on some level, and Jared can connect to Peter on the child's level without condescension. But he's also able to play Jared's desire to hide his proclivities and preoccupations. But then an earlier, shady decision by Jared -- as well as a young kid's propensity to get into everything -- leads to a crisis, one that reveals Jared's lack of responsibility, as well as his limitations.
If this were a different kind of film, the crisis would lead to a personal revelation of sorts, where Jared would change his behavior or re-evaluate his decisions. But this film is too knowing for that, recognizing that people like Jared -- or others dealing with substance abuse -- don't just change with a close call. A charming portrait of an uncle and his nephew becomes a cautionary tale of sorts, and we wonder how many close calls Jared will need to truly change. We're left with a reverie of a charmed afternoon of innocent childhood, seeped with a feeling of uneasiness as we wonder what other turns lie in Jared's path.

The short film appeared so authentic. The child actor was amazing. The sister knew that her brother had an active drug use and had unsuccessful rehab experiences. Why would she leave her 6 year old son with him? People that are addicted don’t make changes over night.
Children left alone for a minute will go through your personal things. You can’t bring anything dangerous around them. They don’t have the capacity to make the right choices. The brother has a lot of work ahead of him. He doesn’t tell the truth or take the child to the ER, doesn’t tell his sister. The lady in scrubs could have been anyone, we don’t know anything about her. Many people wear scrubs.

If anyone is NOT against the use of psychedelic substances then it is me. I have a child too. Bringing into the home, into the other person home. Just bringing there. Is enormous... So unspeakable great lack of responsibility and respect what is hardly sad. Also i would do it. In this case i would be an all time alert guardian of my personal belonging where it is. Also being in this low ability of ur own mind and lack of knowledge about substances u use, using it while u guard someone else, and mainly someone else's child. These things r extraordenary huge things. He is a good guy, but oh way.. so lacking responsibility. It was the mother's fault actually. As a parent, it is ur responsibility who u let in, who u put responsibility on. Even i trust someone sometime, i don't need to trust their self-knowledge and self-trust.
Luckily nothing happened. The kid barely noticed it, he had a good day. It is the possibilities what r the problems.

Hee hee. When I was a teenager my grandma was visiting Oklahoma from Florida. My mom brought her to my apartment. I was in the shower when they came by so I answered the door with a towel around my waist and told them to make themselves at home while I finished. Grams took me up on the offer and ate half of one of my brownies and complimented me on them. They invited me over for dinner and said they were going to the mall. When I got to my mom's house I was so nervous that grandma had had a bad trip. It was such a relief to find her in great spirits and happy to see me. She told me about the trip to the mall and what wonderful lights they had. We had a great time chatting while my mom made supper. Needless to say, she had a good appetite and showered my mom with complements about her cooking.
Okay, that turned out fine but it could easily have gone the other way. I learned not to leave things out where unsuspecting people have access to them.

@@Cate7451 What do you suppose I meant by 'help' and referring to it as a condition which requires medical care? "Treatment" is what a person will receive when they are admitted to a program. There is nothing in my comment that sanctions drug use. What I suggested was that people regard those who do as having a sickness. When human beings are sick Kindness and Compassion is required and, when it comes to addiction, Forgiveness is imperative. As someone who works as a Spiritual Counselor in Addiction Support I can say that the latter is even more important than the first two. Judgement merely brings guilt which sends the addicted mind farther into the spiral of their disease. That's why this presentation is so awesome: at the end he stood outside, dug in his bag and took a bite of the laced brownie right after the argument with his sister. She knew he was an addict so why did she leave her son with him *alone* . She should have chosen a time when she could be there too. Yet that's not how *real* people think; relationships are complicated, especially siblings. So this short film nailed it on so many levels...a brilliant price of work

Okay, there is a risk, but you'd have to ingest pounds of the stuff, no one would ever do that. I don't know why the mother was freaked out over pot, her kid was fine.

Cannabis Use Disorder, I was put on disability for it because it caused a malfunctioning Basil Ganglia. Smoked weed for 25 years and my head yoo full of brain fog to even see reality with clarity. It's a problem when it's a codependency, a crutch, an excuse; do it when waking up, before work, after work, at home, with friends, alone, before bed, etc. If life is so bad that someone believes that need a chemical to begin and end everyday. Then there's an underlying inner trauma trama wound that needs to be healed. In substance abuse therapy, I learned the Spirit within our body is essentially the inner child, the part of us that we abandon the first time we put any kind of harmful chemical into our body. High levels of THC are harmful to a young mind, as it leads to psychosis, Schizophrenia, depression, anxiety, and aggressive behavior. There are government studies and physiology reports that say that. Yet there are young people eating edibles and diving into parents purses and bags to grab their vape pens.... not because they know it's wrong and they are being rebellious, but because adults are supposed to lead by example, children see their parents do it and act happy or calm, or have more friends around them, so they do it too to also feel a sense of love that they aren't receiving from within.
